How to properly harvest chaga.

The birch fungus is found mainly in areas with a humid climate. Grows in the forests of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Chaga mainly lives on old birches or alders. Less commonly, you can find it on other trees.

You can harvest a birch mushroom all year round. But the easiest way to find chaga is in winter. When the trees have dropped their foliage and the space is clearly visible.

Black mushroom growths from the top of a living tree, carefully, taking care not to damage the trunk of the tree, cut it down with a small hatchet or cut it off with a saw. Clean them of wood and loose, light-colored parts. Leave only the hard outer and middle parts.

Cut the chaga into small pieces and dry under a canopy or in a well-ventilated area on a flat surface. It is best to dry the mushroom in the attic. In winter, chaga can be dried in an oven or oven at a temperature of 45-50 degrees.

Place the dried birch mushroom in a glass jar, close the lid tightly and store in a dark and dry place. It is very good to store it in tight canvas bags. It can be stored for 2 years.

Pour 100 g of dried mushroom with warm boiled water to soften. Soak the chaga pieces in water for 4 hours. Then grate them and pour in half a liter of moderately hot water. The water temperature should be no more than 50 degrees. At high temperatures, chaga can lose its medicinal properties.

Insist the mushroom in a tightly sealed container for two days. Strain the infusion through cheesecloth, squeeze the pieces of chaga and mix with the infusion. Then take a glass of infusion 3 times a day, half an hour before meals. The infusion is useful for gastritis and peptic ulcer disease

With an excess of fluid in the body, you need to drink an infusion of double strength: Take 200 g of chaga and half a liter of water, but drink half a glass 3 times a day.

For malignant tumors, drink half a glass of infusion, at least 6 times a day, half an hour before meals. The course of treatment is six months. After 3 months, take a break for 10 days.

Chaga is a unique plant, as a huge mushroom grows from a small spore. It grows on white birch trunks, from which it feeds and is saturated with useful components. All of them are necessary for the body to function properly. The amazing properties of the mushroom were known in ancient times, so it was widely used in folk medicine. Many effective recipes have survived to this day. However, the mushroom was also used in pharmacology. This article will describe in detail chaga, its beneficial properties and uses.

  • A brief description of the mushroom

Chaga is a birch mushroom, which belongs to the "cut tinder fungus" family. This plant is absolutely sterile, as it is formed as a result of the defeat of only one spore of the fungus. Gradually, the healing growth begins to develop, it takes root deeply into the trunk with microscopic colorless veins.

The mushroom has an irregular shape, its body becomes black, and the top cracks over time. Inside it is dark brown, and closer to the tree trunk it is light brown. The fungus has been actively growing and developing for 15 years, and sometimes longer. It goes deeper into the bark, therefore, over the years, a fruit formation forms on the other side of the trunk, which leads to the death of the tree.

Usually, "cut tinder fungus" can be found in birch groves or taiga in Russia. It is also harvested in the highlands of Korea, the United States and North Carolina. The mushroom can be harvested at any time of the year, and it should be stored in a well-closed container so that all the useful properties are preserved.

Why chaga is useful for the body

The birch mushroom has long been used in folk medicine for the treatment of various diseases. Over time, he became interested in scientists, and they began to carefully study him. In the course of research, it turned out that all the beneficial properties of the build-up are due to its chemical components. Among the active ingredients, it includes:

  • organic acid (formic, oxalic, tartaric and acetic);
  • phenols;
  • trace elements (cobalt, copper, magnesium, iron, zinc, silver, nickel);
  • resin;
  • polysaccharides;
  • cellulose;
  • tanning components;
  • sterols.

On the basis of the healing growth, various infusions, decoctions and tinctures are made. However, when preparing a medicine, it is necessary to know the correct proportions and additional components in order for the therapy to bring maximum benefits. There are many effective birch mushroom-based formulations that effectively combat health problems such as:

  • improves the general condition of malignant neoplasms;
  • the body acquires a lot of useful substances;
  • the level of the immune system rises;
  • improves appetite;
  • relieves pain syndrome;
  • reduces the amount of cholesterol;
  • relieves inflammation;
  • improves sleep;
  • reduces the amount of glucose in plasma;
  • restores the work of the digestive system;
  • is a diuretic and choleretic agent;
  • tones up and strengthens all processes in the tissues;
  • normalizes the functioning of the central nervous system;
  • eliminates depression and stress;
  • forms a protective film on the mucous walls.

Chaga helps other medicines to be absorbed better and is therefore often recommended as an adjunct to traditional therapies. Its active components restore the protective functions of the body, which help to quickly cope with the disease. In addition, timely fungal therapy stops the development of cancer cells.

Harvesting and storage of medicinal mushrooms

You can pick the mushroom at any time, but experts recommend harvesting it in the fall or early spring. This advice is due to the fact that during this period of time, the maximum accumulation of nutrients is concentrated in the growth.

Important! Particular attention should be paid to the appearance of the mushroom, as well as the condition of the tree on which it grows. It is important to collect it on a birch tree, the tree must be healthy, then the mushroom is full of useful properties. It should not crumble, and its flesh should not be black in the middle.

Cut off the build-up with a large knife or ax. This must be done very carefully so as not to harm the tree. The cut chaga hardens quickly, so it must be immediately crushed into small pieces (up to 5 cm). The birch mushroom is dried in a dryer at a temperature not exceeding 50 ° C.

Important! If there is no special equipment, then a dry and well-ventilated area is suitable. As soon as it dries, it is placed in a container that will close tightly or a bag made of cotton fabric. The shelf life should not exceed 2 years.

How to brew a chaga-based medicine

There are a huge number of ways to brew a birch mushroom. Often, the build-up is simply finely chopped, poured with boiling water and that's it. However, such an infusion does not allow to fully open up all the beneficial properties of the plant. Such a medicine is suitable only for the prevention of certain diseases.

Sometimes a decoction is prepared according to a very simple recipe. To do this, grind the mushroom (200 g) and pour 250 ml of boiling water. Then boil over low heat for 15 minutes. However, it is forbidden to do this! When boiled, the build-up loses almost all useful properties, so it will not bring the desired result.

The infusion should be prepared in the correct ratio of 1: 4, that is, 1 part of crushed raw materials and 4 parts of boiling water. Place all the ingredients in a thermos and leave for 12 hours so that the medicine is well infused.
  2. The main option for preparing a medicinal decoction. Several pieces of chaga (1 part) should be placed in a ceramic container and filled with boiled water cooled to about 50 ° C (5 parts). The mixture is left for 6 hours to infuse. After the lapse of time, the softened mushroom should be chopped, and the infusion should be heated to a temperature of 50 ° C. Then a small mushroom is placed in warm water, everything is carefully wrapped and placed in a dark place for 2 days. After 2 days, the infusion is filtered, and the thick is squeezed out thoroughly. If necessary, add boiled water to the medicine to return to the original volume. It is allowed to store the broth for no more than 4 days in the refrigerator.
  3. A quick but correct way to prepare the infusion. To prepare chaga (1 part), combine with boiled water at 50 ° C (5 parts). The mixture is infused for 5 hours, after which the mushroom is thoroughly chopped. The water in which the mushroom was soaked should be warmed up and fine chaga should be put in it. The medicinal broth should be infused for 4–5 hours.

Outside, the mushroom is painted black, inside it is brown or dark brown, and closer to wood it is reddish-brown with yellow or white veins.

You will learn how to prepare raw materials, how to prepare an infusion, tincture, decoction, tea, extract based on it, and how to use them. You will also learn what medicinal products are based on the mushroom, and what chaga helps with.

What does it look like

The appearance of a birch mushroom (chaga). Tinder fungus spores attack the tree trunk through damaged areas of the bark, and a sound white rot develops in the wood. Over time, a protective zone with rusty-brown patches of mycelium forms around the rot.

The fruiting body of the fungus is formed 3-4 years after infection. It is an irregular growth with a black surface, dotted with numerous cracks.

Inside, the color of the fungus is dark brown, and closer to the junction with the wood, it is reddish-brown. The fruit body is riddled with colorless veins through which the fungus absorbs nutrients from the wood.

The life cycle of a cut tinder fungus can last up to 20 years, until the infected birch dies. The spore-bearing body is formed only after the death of the tree. As the spores develop, crest-like outgrowths form on the dead trunk, which destroy the bark and expose the spore-bearing layer of the fungus. Young spores are colorless, then light reddish in color. The spore walls are thick. Each spore contains one or more drops of oil.

The size of the growth, depending on age, is from 5 to 40 cm in diameter and about 10 cm in thickness. The weight of an adult tinder fungus can reach 4-5 kg.

Where grows

On the territory of Russia, chaga can be found in birch groves and mixed forest plantations. It usually affects birch trunks, less often alder, maple, elm and beech.

Also, the mushroom is found throughout the birch habitat in eastern Europe, in the north of the United States, in South and North Korea.

The growth is cut off with a sharp knife or ax at the very trunk. The loose part of the mushroom near the trunk is cut off and thrown away, since it contains a minimum amount of nutrients. Then the mushroom is cleaned from the remnants of the bark, chips and dirt.

Before drying, cut the mushroom into pieces of 5-10 cm. Dry the chaga loosely on a tarp in a dry, warm and well-ventilated area. You can also dry in automatic dryers at a temperature not exceeding 60 degrees.

These are tinder fungi, the type of which is the chaga mushroom. Settling in trees, these fungi cause white rot of its core, which further leads to the death of the tree.

Found in Russia, Siberia, the Far East, the North Caucasus and the Urals

What is chaga?

Chaga mushroom or tinder fungus, whose Latin name is Inonotus obliquus, is popularly known as "black birch mushroom" or birch chaga. It grows in places of damage to the tree bark, has an irregular shape, the diameter can be up to 40 cm, the thickness is about 15 cm, and the weight sometimes reaches 5 kg. The inner color of the fungus is dark brown with white veins.

Chaga can settle both on living trees and on dead ones. It propagates, like all mushrooms, by spores that germinate under the bark of a tree, forming a network of mushroom filaments - mycelium. Growing, the mycelium breaks through the bark and a black growth appears on the tree, with cracks and uneven edges.

The body of the fungus consists of tubes inclined towards the surface. The mushroom has a dense pulp that hardens when dried. When separated from the tree, the young chaga mushroom has a whitish tint, while the old mushrooms are black-brown.

Nature has endowed humanity with a huge number of medicinal plants, which have been used since ancient times by healers and herbal healers.

Chaga or birch mushroom, as a miracle cure, has also been used for a very, very long time.

The first written evidence of this mushroom appeared in the annals of Russian chroniclers of the 11th century, where a cure for lip cancer was described with the help of a decoction of a birch mushroom of the Grand Duke of Russia, Vladimir Monomakh.

The famous doctor of the Middle Ages Abu Ali ibn Sina, also known as Avicenna, did not disregard chaga. In his writings, he describes the properties of this mushroom and how it can be used as a remedy.

For the inhabitants of Siberia and the Far East, the birch mushroom has always been a panacea for the treatment of many diseases. There are descriptions dating from the 16th century, in which chaga was used to treat the stomach, intestines, cancer, male and female genital organs, treat boils, and sore joints.

In the eighteenth century. reference books and Russian herbalists appeared, where there are also recipes for the treatment of various diseases, including malignant tumors. Traditional healers, along with recipes, suggested drinking tea steamed with a birch mushroom so as not to get sick.
It should also be noted that in places where chaga mushroom grows, the population often drinks it instead of black or green tea, and people there get less cancer.

How and when is chaga harvested

In order to use chaga for medicinal purposes and to collect it correctly, it must be remembered that only the chaga mushroom growing on living trees and only on birches is useful.

On dead trees, chaga is destroyed and becomes unusable for medicinal purposes. If the trees grow in a damp place, you cannot use the mushroom growing on the lower part of the trunk.

Chaga also needs to be distinguished from other polypores, which are shaped like a hoof with a downward plane. There are also non-medicinal tinder fungi that have the shape of a semicircle, grayish or brownish in color, with a smooth surface. They are attached to the tree trunk with their central part and easily come off, unlike the chaga mushroom. Chaga tastes bitter and odorless.

Chaga, unlike other polypores, consists of three layers:
- external, having a black, resinous or black-brown color, bumpy and cracked surface,
- the middle layer is dense, granular at the fracture, brown-brown color,
- and the inner one is brownish-reddish, with white-yellow veins, without a spongy layer.

Chaga is harvested at any time of the year. For treatment, use the middle of the mushroom, cutting and drying which, they make decoctions, infusions, including alcoholic ones.

Useful medicinal properties of birch mushroom

The chaga mushroom has an unusually complex chemical composition, which determines its unique therapeutic properties.

Chaga contains polysaccharides and organic acids, lipids and fiber, steroid and pterin compounds, various trace elements such as copper, zinc, iron, barium, aluminum, calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, dyes, a small amount of alkaloids, water-soluble pigments, agarcin and humic-like chagic acids.

An important element contained in chaga in large quantities is manganese, an activator of many enzymes. Scientists have determined that the main thing in chaga is the presence of a chromogenic polyphenolcarbon complex, which has the highest biological activity - it is a powerful biostimulant that is not found in any other polyphenols.

Thanks to this unusual composition, chaga has a positive effect on the metabolism, nervous system and immune responses of the body. Chaga relieves intoxication well.

The use of chaga in the treatment of oncological diseases is associated with such a useful ability of it as the removal of toxins from the body, which are formed in tumors. It should be noted that the chaga mushroom can be useful and effective in all types of tumors.

In addition, the properties of chaga include the fact that this mushroom:

  • increases the protective properties of the whole organism,
  • has a stimulating effect on the central nervous system,
  • positively affects the metabolism and has a stimulating effect on the metabolism in the brain tissue,
  • activates inhibited enzyme systems,
  • has a good effect on the activity of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems,
  • increasing the level of leukocytes, stimulates hematopoiesis,
  • also used as an anti-inflammatory agent,
  • increases the activity of anticancer drugs,
  • inhibits the growth of tumors, restoring the body's defenses,
  • has antispasmodic properties,
  • excellent diuretic,
  • is an antimicrobial, healing agent,
