General information and history

Bor is located in the center of the Nizhny Novgorod region, on the left bank of the Volga (Nizhny Novgorod is located on the opposite bank). The city is separated from Moscow by about 450 kilometers. The area of the city is 147 km².

Initially, Finno-Ugric tribes lived on the site of the city, for example, the Meschera, and even later the settlements of Kopytovskaya, Vezlomskaya and Nikolskaya appeared. Then the inhabitants of the first two settlements founded the Nikolsko-Borovskaya (Borovskaya) settlement at the beginning of the Trans-Volga trade road, which in turn in the 13th century turned into a large village of Bor. The inhabitants of the village and suburb were hunters and artisans, that is, joiners and carpenters. They also worked as carriers from Nizhny Novgorod to the Volga region and back.

Bor and its environs began to actively develop and populate in the 17th century. And after a century and a half, stone churches and houses appeared in Bor Sloboda, the scale of shipbuilding industry increased, and summer cottages began to be built in the nearby pine forests. In the village itself, there were a number of trade shops, a hospital, a school, a mill and an iron-cutting plant. There were large fairs twice a year. Craftsmen were engaged in blacksmithing and felting. The shipping company developing in Nizhny Novgorod helped to develop transportation in Bor.

After the revolution of 1917, in the period before the Great Patriotic War, industry developed even more in the Bor region, and the village itself was transformed into a workers' settlement. In 1923, the Krasny Ramen plant was established, where chains were manufactured. Four years later, the Nizhny Novgorod industrial region had a railway connection with Siberia, the Urals, the northern and eastern regions of the RSFSR. Glass, peat-forming, ship-repairing and logging industries also functioned. In 1938 Bor officially became a city.

Before the appearance of the Cheboksary reservoir in 1980, Bor stood on the very bank of the Volga. Currently, the city is separated from the river by about one kilometer, and stands on the bank of the floodplain, viewed from the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. In 2004-05, the neighboring villages, the Pichugino residential area and the Letnevo village, were included in the Bor territory. In 2012, the city was connected with Nizhny Novgorod by a cable car. In 2030 Bor will become part of the regional capital.
