The geographical position of the Okrug in the Arctic zone and the influence of the Arctic Ocean have led to cold winters, in which the air temperature rises as you move deeper into the continent from -22 °C to -12 °C. The summer period is short, and temperatures rarely exceed +12 °C. Such a changeable climate has caused the formation of several natural zones. The Arctic tundra, whose vegetation is represented by individual islets of mosses and lichens, rare shrubs and grasses, is located in the territory adjacent to the seas of the Arctic Ocean and has spread to more than 70% of the district. It is followed by forest-steppe and taiga, occupying 15% and 8%, respectively.
The “Stone City” serves as a mystery of the area, a natural monument, whose giant boulders reach 180 m, rare species of plants and animals listed in the Red Book also grow here.
The picturesque landscape of the Big Gate canyon is of interest to both naturalists and paleontologists, because is an excellent opportunity to study the Devonian Sea that was once located here.
This region is peculiar, where there is so little from a person. The only attraction that owes its creation to man is the city, whose business cards are the wooden buildings of the post office and administration.

The second largest settlement is the Settlement of Iskateley - this is the administrative center of the Zapolyarny district of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The rest of the settlements of the rural type. Most of the district is located beyond the Arctic Circle, except for part of the East European Plain, it includes two islands. The boundaries of the district are washed by four seas of the Arctic Ocean.

The harsh subarctic climate is due to the geographical location. The terrain is mostly flat, there are only two hills: the Pai-Khoi ridge, up to 470 m high, and the Timan ridge. In addition to the main Pechora River, the territory is dotted with many small rivers and lakes. Significant areas are occupied by swamps and permafrost. Natural zones of the region: tundra, forest-tundra and taiga. The climate is extremely unfavorable for vegetation, no more than 5% of the soil cover of the district is occupied by forests. However, in the short summer months, the flora comes alive, thousands of species of small herbs, dwarf shrubs, mosses and grasses cover the ground abundantly.
