A country of incredible contrasts in everything, the second most populous in the world, and perhaps the only one in which there are six seasons of the year! India reveals its weather secrets, which should be used in planning a trip to this distant country.

Climatic zones of India

Spread over three million square kilometers of the peninsula Hindustan , India has an impressive territory. It would be very strange if the weather here was boring ordinary.

Bay of Bengal, Strait of Polk, Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea- all this natural wealth influences not only the development of the tourism industry, but also the formation of a different, sometimes extreme, climate.

India's landscape contributes to weather diversity: the hot breath of the desert, the Himalayan mountain temperature drops, the humid valleys of the Indus and Ganges rivers.

The website Weather 33 describes the climate of Goa separately, as most tourists go there. But in India there are many other equally interesting places.

It is the remoteness from the oceanic expanses and the landscape, together with the height above sea level, that prevail in determining the climate in each specific region of India.

Geographically, the following main climatic regions can be distinguished:

  • Subequatorial belt - it contains most of India. Here dominate tropical monsoons starting at the end of May, gradually advancing to the Himalayas. At the beginning of July, the maximum amount of precipitation is already recorded throughout the country. The monsoon period lasts until November.
  • Himalayas - here mountainous high-altitude climate (in winter, freezing temperatures in the highlands, in summer - a maximum of + 30 ° C)
  • Indo-Gangetic Plain moderate climate with continental features, dominant in the north of the country, suggests hot summers and cold winters
  • Tropical wet - islands
  • Tropical dry - states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, southern Punjab
  • Subtropical monsoon - North India

Seasons of the year:

  • November-February - sunny, but cool, little precipitation
  • March-June - hot weather, no precipitation
  • July-September - hot, but monsoons prevail, therefore the humidity is very high
  • October-December - postmusson

In general, in India there are six seasons - three main ones, plus early spring and two rainy seasons.

Tourist seasons of India

Among the three main seasons of the year, the most comfortable for tourists who are not used to the constant "sauna" on the city streets or torrential rains is the period from October to March. This period is well suited for traveling in Central, North and partly in the South of India.

The best time to climb the mountains is June-August. At this time, the Himalayas are the most hospitable to tourists.

The average air temperature is around + 28 + 32 ° C, the water temperature in the Indian Ocean is about + 25 ° C.

The period of the first half of the year can be excellently spent in the south of India, and also during this time you can visit the deserts of Rajasthan.

The most unique month in terms of combination of different types of recreation is December, because at this time in one region the ski season starts, and in another - the beach season is in full swing!

What to take with you

India is a contrasting country. If in tourist centers everything is possible, for every taste and thickness of the wallet, then the poor and unsanitary conditions reign on the outskirts. If a traveler wants to see real India, outside of tourist routes, then first of all, you need to stock up on a first-aid kit. Analgesics, all kinds of drugs for gastrointestinal disorders, prophylactic drugs for malaria and allergies.

It is definitely worth taking tanning products with you, be sure to wear hats and sunglasses.

As for clothing, in India women wear long saris; it is not customary here to wear short skirts and flaunt in a swimsuit down the street. It is better to take several sets of clothes (just not cotton - it dries for a long time, it is better to take satin or silk), the rest can be bought cheaply. Oversized shirts for men and long dresses for women can be purchased locally at low prices. You need to take linen with you, you should not buy it on the spot. Good sturdy shoes and a raincoat in bad weather are a must. By the way, on the last point - you do not need to take an umbrella: in dry weather it is not needed, and during the rainy season, you will get wet even under it. In the colder months, be sure to wear a hat and a fleece jacket. For ski holidays - appropriate equipment. A windbreaker will come in handy in the mountains.

Take with you such a pair of shoes, or better a few, with which it is not a pity to say goodbye. The fact is that when entering the temples, it is customary to take off your shoes in India. And you will not always find it where you left it.

Giving clothes to wash in India is also not an easy task. Of course, you can use the services of a male laundress (the so-called dhobi), but it is not a fact that your snow-white shirt will be returned to you safe and sound, and even without any shade.

Gold jewelry, to which there is just a cult, it is better not to take with you - it can be ripped from your neck, or stolen on the train while you sleep.

A separate item is bed linen. Your ideas about cleanliness will not always coincide with local traditions.

You will also need such little things as a flashlight (there are interruptions with an electrician everywhere), personal utensils, a boiler (you are unlikely to find it there), personal hygiene products, and a phrasebook.

The tropical climate of India is a real gift for those who like to bask in the sun in winter. When cold weather rages in the northern hemisphere, India is the peak season.

The hottest months are from October to April, then the rainy season begins.

Most tourists visit India in late autumn and winter. Christmas and New Year tours are in great demand.

Winter

Winter in India is the best time for a beach holiday and a great tan. In December-January, the air temperature does not go below + 31 ° С, the ocean is fresh milk (approximately + 26 ° С). In winter, Goa hotels are never empty, so we recommend booking a tour in advance, especially if you are planning a trip during the New Year holidays.

Snow falls only in the mountainous regions of northern India, but tourists also come there in winter. The demand for ski holidays in the Himalayas is growing every year.

Spring

Spring in India is perhaps the most controversial time of the year. Usually in March and April, the coast is characterized by an abnormal heat under + 35 ° С, and in May the rainy season begins. It can rain like a “wall” for several hours. The most optimal region for travel at this time is the Himalayas and the northern regions of India.

Summer

In summer, the rainy season in India reaches its climax. Despite the heat (up to + 32 ° C), being outside is uncomfortable due to high humidity and winds. The maximum amount of precipitation falls in July-August, but bad weather persists until October.

Autumn

In autumn, the monsoon season ends in India and the swimming season begins. The air temperature remains at around + 31 ° C, but the lack of precipitation has a beneficial effect on the tourism business. Cafes that were closed for the summer are opening, fewer and fewer places are left in Goa hotels, tourists from all over the world flock here.

Interestingly, tours at the beginning of the beach season are usually cheaper than winter ones.

India's climate is tropical monsoon in most of the country, subequatorial in the south of the country, temperate in northern India, and alpine in the mountains and foothills of the Himalayas. In addition, due to the vast territory of India, the climate of each specific region also depends on many local factors: for example, on the features of the relief, altitude, proximity to the ocean and to large bodies of water.

The most important climate-forming factors for the entire territory of India are the Himalayas and the Thar Desert. The Himalayas, along with the Hindu Kush mountain system, located in the neighboring Pakistan , prevent the penetration of cold air masses from Central Asia into India and maintain a warmer climate here than in neighboring countries at the same latitudes. And the Thar Desert attracts humid southwestern monsoon air masses, thereby providing precipitation and softening the climate.

The relief of India is extremely varied. Here are the highest mountain peaks in the world - the Himalayas, and tropical rain forests, and large deserts, and green meadows, and long sandy beaches. Accordingly, the weather and air temperature and the climate in general vary greatly, depending on the region. For example, in the highlands of the Himalayas, the temperature is below zero all year round and there is always snow on the peaks. Throughout the central territory of the country, there is never a cold weather, and many trees do not even shed their foliage. And in the south of the country there are the best Indian beaches, where the holiday season is, by the way, winter!

It is India that is the first to break all climatic records! Here, in the town of Dras in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, a very low air temperature was recorded, which was -45 ° C. And on the Siachen glacier, which is a disputed territory with Pakistan, but is actually controlled by India, a temperature of -55 ° C (!) Was noted. The record high temperature was recorded in the city of Alwar, Rajasthan, and amounted to + 50.6 ° C (!). And in the state of Orissa, another record was recently recorded - + 55 ° C in the daytime. In addition, it is in India that the wettest place on the planet is located! The city of Cherrapunji in the state of Meghalaya boasts a record rainfall - about 12,000 mm per year! Such a large amount of precipitation is due to the geographical location, which is relatively close to both the Bay of Bengal and the Himalayas. But in Mumbai, the largest amount of precipitation was recorded in one day - 650 mm!

On the other hand, such a mild and favorable climate brings unpleasant surprises to this country. Every year, in the summer months, most of the country is dominated by the monsoon season, which is more rampant in the southern part of the Indian subcontinent, just at the beach resorts loved by all. In June, there are such heavy thunderstorms that it seems as if the ocean has turned over. This monsoon picks up steam at the very beginning of summer, fueled by Bengal and Arabian moisture along the way, and then floats over India, moving towards the northwest.

Well, what is there, some kind of monsoon, when the territory of India, with enviable constancy, is shaken by various natural disasters related to the climate. The most common natural disasters in India are floods, droughts, tropical cyclones, avalanches, landslides, snowstorms, dust storms and large hail that sometimes spoils wheat and rice. Man is to blame for many of these troubles.

In the lower part of the Himalayas, landslides are a real disaster. Deforestation caused by land clearing and construction contributes to the development of landslides and their spread throughout the area. Winter landslides - avalanches are very common in regions such as Kashmir, Sikkim and Himachal Pradesh.

When the southwest monsoons dominate India in abundant rainfall, many rivers, such as the Brahmaputra, overflow and flood the surrounding area. And here we are faced with the most common natural disaster in India - flooding. Almost the entire territory of the country is susceptible to floods. Since the majority of the population of India live in poverty, practically, in their own made tents or huts, floods lead to severe destruction and numerous casualties. Too intense monsoon rainfall can completely wash away crops.

In the southern part of the country, tropical cyclones often bring downpours, storm surges and strong destructive winds. Every year in India there are, on average, 8 strong storms, with a wind speed of more than 63 km / h, and the speed of individual wind gusts often reaches more than 117 km / h. The strongest and most destructive storms hit the east coast of India, in the Bay of Bengal (over which, in fact, most tropical cyclones originate). The Indian coast of the Arabian Sea is relatively calm and is extremely rarely affected by cyclones. Typically, such cyclones strike the coast of Gujarat and even more rarely - in Kerala. Cyclone-induced storms and hurricanes kill several thousand people every year in India.

While some regions of India are experiencing a huge excess of precipitation, others, on the contrary, are sorely lacking. Eastern Maharashtra, northern Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Gujarat and Rajasthan are particularly prone to droughts. Severe droughts are the reason for the decline in yields, and as a result - the cause of mass famine ( in the last century, from one severe drought in India, an average of 5 million people died of hunger (!!!) ). The drought is caused by the change of pressure areas in the southern Indian Ocean and the associated draft of dry air from Central Asia. It is these reverse air currents that are responsible for the Indian droughts. Moreover, scientists were able to prove that changes in surface temperature of the central Pacific Ocean directly depend on the degree of drought in India.

In most of the country, three main climatic seasons can be distinguished: winter (October - February), summer (March - June) and the rainy season (June - September), the duration of which depends on the specific region and can vary from year to year.

Winter in India

The winter months in India are traditionally the coldest. But this does not mean that you cannot rest in the country in winter, because the territory of India is huge, and everyone will find something to their liking here. The lowest air temperatures are, naturally, in mountainous regions, where the climate is gradually changing from warm and sub-humid tropical (450 - 900 meters in height) through warm temperate (900 - 800 meters in height), cold temperate (1 900 - 2,400 meters in height ) to the cold glacial and alpine (2,400 - 4,800 meters of altitude). Quite low air temperatures are observed here at nights and mornings, and the snow cover at an altitude of about 3,000 meters is approximately 3 meters and lies from December to March. The average daytime air temperature at such altitudes is -5 - -8 ° С. Areas higher than 4,500 meters are in the zone of permanent snow, and it is even colder here. Three Indian states - Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarkhand experience heavy snowfalls in winter, while snowstorms are frequent in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Indo-Gangetic plain never receives snowfall. Sometimes the temperature in the northern regions of the country drops below 0 ° C, but such cold weather rarely lasts more than 1 - 2 days. But in Amritsar there are sharp drops in temperature down to -6 ° C. A distinctive feature of the central and northern regions of India during the winter season is thick fog.

In the central regions of India, the weather is quite bearable in December. For example, in Delhi and Agra, the average daily air temperature in December is +21 - + 24 ° С, but at night it becomes very cool - +6 - + 9 ° С, while rain is unlikely here this month.

In the eastern part of the country, it is warmer in December. In Calcutta, in December, during the day the air warms up to + 25 ° С, and at night it cools down to + 19 ° С. Rain and wind are also rare guests at this time of the year. But in the western state of Maharashtra, despite the proximity to the state of Goa, the climate is more severe, and although the average daily air temperature in Mumbai in December can be about + 31 ° C, in the east of the state, closer to the central regions, the air temperature can drop to + 10 ° С and even below the 0 ° С mark. There is no rain, the average wind speed is 2 - 4 m / s, the water temperature in the Arabian Sea is + 27 ° С.

But the southern regions of India in winter are a real tropical paradise! Summer reigns here and the weather is excellent. The average daily air temperature in Indian seaside resorts such as Goa and Kerala ranges from + 31 ° C to + 35 ° C. Nights with a temperature of + 21- + 24 ° С bring coolness. The temperature of sea water in December is +28 - + 29 ° С, very warm. This month is characterized, practically, by a complete absence of rain, calmness, and air humidity is already quite acceptable for Europeans.

January - the crown of winter and the coldest month in India. Nevertheless, over most of the country, a dry wind blows from the northeast, the weather is clear, without sudden temperature changes, and with minimal rainfall. The exception is the high mountainous regions of the Himalayas, where it is quite cold in January, and the air temperature often drops below -8 ° C. But here, too, there are a lot of tourists who prefer winter entertainment to beach vacations. There are several ski resorts here, among which the most popular are Gulmarg (Kashmir), Auli (Uttarakhand) and Manali (Himachal Pradesh).

Nezharko in January and in the capital of India - the city of Delhi. Here in the daytime the air can warm up to +13 - + 22 ° С, with a cold snap at night up to +6 - + 13 ° С. Similar temperatures are observed in January and in Agra. But, the weather in this region, in general, is wonderful, very sunny, without rains and strong winds.

In Calcutta, it is also warm and dry, but much hotter, during the day the thermometer can rise to + 28 ° С, and at night it can drop to + 12 ° С. There are no rainy days in Calcutta in January, there is no wind at this time, the air "stands", and sometimes it is hard to breathe, especially next to busy noisy roads.

In Mumbai, summer is all year round, however, January is considered a cool month here, although the air temperature during the day is around + 29 ° С, but with sunset it drops to + 19 ° С. The water temperature off the west coast is around + 25 ° C.

The popular Indian beach resorts of Goa and Kerala have a "high" beach season in January. There are more than enough tourists this month, because the weather is more than comfortable and conducive to doing nothing and endless water procedures. In the daytime, the air in the resorts warms up to + 32 ° С, cooling down to + 20 ° С at night. The water temperature reaches + 28 ° С. No precipitation is expected in January, the wind is also very weak. The humidity level during the daytime is only 35%.

The weather in India in February is generally dry and warm, and not much different from January. To go skiing, you should go to the resorts of the Himalayas, where at altitudes up to 2,300 meters above sea level in February there are comfortable air temperatures - -1 - -4 ° С, and with an increase in altitude, temperatures drop noticeably.

In Delhi and Agra, the average daytime air temperature ranges from + 15 ° С to + 22 ° С, while the night air temperature is not high - only, +7 - + 11 ° С. Rains are unlikely, as are winds.

In Calcutta in February, traditionally, it is warmer, the air temperature rises to + 28 ° C during the day, and drops to + 15 ° C at night. But on the western coast of India it is hot - in Mumbai during the daytime the air warms up to + 29 ° С, and at night it cools down to + 20 ° С. Rains and winds are unlikely.

Indian beach resorts are full of tourists. Goa and Kerala continue to delight fans of beach holidays. The average daytime air temperature in February in these states is at around + 31 ° С, in the dark it is very comfortable - + 26 ° С. It is also dry and calm here, and the temperature of the sea water in February is + 27 ° С. The air humidity in February rises slightly, but, in general, does not exceed 40%.

Spring in India

The spring period, in most of the country, begins in March. At the same time, in the southern states of India, spring, as such, does not happen at all, since hot summer reigns here all year round, and spring does not reach the mountain peaks of the Himalayas at all - apparently it cannot climb, because there is an eternal permafrost. Nevertheless, in the coldest mountain regions of India it is noticeably warmer, in March one can already observe air temperatures up to + 15 ° C (at altitudes below 3000 meters), and ski resorts on the slopes of the Himalayas are closed in March.

Delhi and Agra get much warmer and even hotter in March. The average air temperature fluctuates during the day, within the range from + 28 ° С to + 32 ° С, at night, it is also noticeably warmer - from + 12 ° С to + 20 ° С. The probability of precipitation in March increases, but there is no need to fear, rains are still very rare. Therefore, the skies are clear during the day, and the stars are visible at night.

In Calcutta, too, it is warm and clear, the average daytime air temperature in March is +29 - + 32 ° С, at night up to + 22 ° С, there is practically no rain. In Mumbai, daytime air temperatures are even higher - here the thermometer does not drop below + 31 ° C in March, most often the daytime temperature reaches + 36 ° C, at night it is + 22 ° C. The water in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Mumbai warms up to + 26 ° C in March.

In the southern regions of India, the “high” beach season continues in March. In Goa and Kerala, the average daytime air temperature rises to +32 - + 35 ° С, at night it drops only to + 28 ° С. The water temperature at the beach resorts ranges from + 27 ° C to + 30 ° C. There is no rain, although the humidity is higher than in the winter months. From time to time, slight southerly winds blow, which only bring coolness.

In March, you can go to the Andaman Islands, where a refreshing sea breeze constantly blows, and the sea, still calm without rain, is ideal for diving.

April is the middle of spring, the weather in India does not promise anything new, well, except for extremely high air temperatures. The only exceptions are, perhaps, the mountainous regions of the country, where at an altitude of up to 2,500 meters above sea level, the temperature rises only up to + 25 ° C. In the rest of India, unbearable heat reigns in April.

So, in the largest central cities of the country, such as Delhi and Agra, the average daily air temperature in April is + 38 ° C, and often the thermometer overcomes this mark. At night it is a little cooler, on average, +22 - + 25 ° С, the sky is clear, rain is extremely unlikely. It should be noted that such high air temperatures are very difficult to endure in large, dusty cities.

About the same temperatures are observed in Calcutta. Here, on the mountain of tourists, high humidity is added to this heat, creating hellish conditions for traveling around the city in the middle of the day. It is hot in Mumbai too, but here a slight breeze from the sea softens the heat a little. The water off the coast of the state of Maharashtra warms up in April to + 29 ° С.

It is most comfortable to endure the April heat at Indian beach resorts. In Goa and Kerala, the average daytime air temperature in April reaches + 33 ° С, and at night the temperature drops by only a few degrees - up to +26 - + 27 ° С. Due to the proximity of the sea, the heat is transferred here much easier, in addition, you can always refresh yourself in the waters of the Arabian Sea, although in April they practically "boil", because the water temperature near the coast of the resorts warms up to + 30 ° С. Humidity in April, compared to the winter months, increases markedly, because the rainy season looms ahead on the horizon, because of this, prices for holidays at popular beach resorts can pleasantly surprise.

May Is a very hot month in India. In addition, it is in May that the monsoon season begins in many regions of the country. Air humidity is increasing, its indicators often exceed the April norm at times. Increasingly, a gusty wind begins to blow, raising yellow clouds of sand and dust from the ground, covering the sky. This month, even the mountainous regions of India are no exception, where the beginning of the monsoon season is accompanied by heavy downpours with thunderstorms.

In the central states of India, as such, the monsoon season in May has not yet begun, however, precipitation is becoming noticeably higher. Here is another scourge - very high, simply mind-blowing daytime air temperatures. For example, in large Indian cities, such as Delhi and Agra, the average daily air temperature in May fluctuates around +38 - + 43 ° С (!!!). That is, do not even expect temperatures below + 38 ° С in May. At night, the temperature drops to + 26 ° C, but this temperature indicator does not bring tangible coolness.

In the east of the country, in the vicinity of Calcutta, in May, it is also hot, here the average daytime air temperature reaches + 34 ° С, at night it also drops, on average, to + 26 ° С, while the humidity here is much higher than in Delhi and in Agra, which means that the heat is more noticeable. In Mumbai, due to the proximity of the Arabian Sea, the air temperatures are more comfortable, here during the day, on average, + 33 ° С, at night - + 27 ° С. The water in the Arabian Sea warms up to +28 - + 30 ° С, however, for water procedures, May is not the best time, this month strong and high waves dominate the sea, which only surfers can master. In addition, due to frequent sandstorms, the color of the water in the sea changes, becoming dull yellow. By the end of the month, the amount of rain increases, and it can rain every day.

May is the last opportunity to relax at Indian beach resorts, although this vacation will not always be pleasant. The southern states of India are the first to be hit by the monsoon season. And although May is not the rainiest month, frequent rains will not keep you waiting long. Rainy weather is especially relevant for the state of Kerala. Here, in May, there is a lot of precipitation, in just a month there are only 6 - 8 days without precipitation. Unlike Kerala, you can still relax in Goa in May. The most comfortable rest will be in the first half of the month. The average daily air temperature in the resorts is kept at around +32 - + 35 ° С, and the water temperature is + 30 ° С. In the second half of May, the sky is increasingly clouded with clouds, or even clouds at all, the wind intensifies, and the humidity level rises noticeably. It can rain for several hours a day, or a cloudy day can turn into a sunny one. A big plus for tourists is that prices for holidays in May are reduced by about half, and those who have long dreamed of visiting Goa can make their dream come true for very little money. Well, and the weather ... well, what, in fact, the weather? It is unpredictable at any time of the year ...

Summer in India

Indian summers are humid and very hot. In summer, in India, unusually high temperatures are noted, reaching + 50 ° C (!) And more! This is due to the strong, hot and dry winds of Lu, which blow in summer quite often in the north and north-west of the country. However, this does not apply to mountainous regions, in the high regions of the Deccan plateau and other heights in summer it is usually somewhat cooler - the air temperature ranges from + 15 ° С to + 30 ° С, the monsoon raging on the plain is powerless here.

June is the rainy month. At this time, the monsoon prevails over most of the territory of India, therefore, precipitation is almost daily. In early June, on the western coast of the Arabian Sea, the rains are especially heavy, and by the middle of the month they begin to move towards Bengal - the east coast. Monsoon bypasses the mountain peaks of the Himalayas - here it will be most comfortable to rest in June. But the mountains of Assam and the Western Ghats flood the rains well, in addition, strong winds blow here, at a speed of 16 - 24 km / h. The central lowland part of the country is slightly less prone to precipitation - heavy showers occur several times a month.

It is very hot in June. And even the rains are not able to calm down the summer heat. In the largest central cities, such as Delhi and Agra, the average daytime air temperature reaches +38 - + 40 ° С, at night, too, it is hot - up to + 28 ° С. Rains here are not present in such abundance, and there are, only a few times a month.

A slightly different situation with the weather in the east of the country. For example, in Kolkata in June it is also hot, the average daily air temperature is + 37 ° C, but it is accompanied by a rather high air humidity, which is why a real steam room is formed in the city. In addition, there is much more rainfall in the east of the country than in the central part, and it rains in Calcutta for about half a month.

It also floods the western part of the country. In Mumbai, in June, the sky is covered with dense clouds, and there is twice as much precipitation as in Kolkata. At the same time, it is a little cooler here, the average daytime air temperature reaches + 32 ° С, and at night it drops to + 26 ° С. Strong gusts of wind raise clouds of dust into the air, which color the horizon in a dirty yellow color.

There is nothing to do in Indian beach resorts in June. Average daytime air temperatures in Goa and Kerala reach + 30 ° С during the day, and at night I drop to and + 24 ° С. But, summer time here is accompanied by heavy rainfall and high humidity. Despite the high temperature of sea water, which reaches + 29 ° C in June, it is unlikely that you will be able to swim, because the sea is constantly storming. In addition, the resorts are constantly cloudy and very windy. The cost of recreation in the summer season is very low, you can have a rest, literally, for a penny, while avoiding noisy crowds of tourists. But do you want to relax in such bad weather?

July is the hottest and wettest month in India. The highest air temperatures are observed in the central regions of India - here during the day around + 45 ° С. The most comfortable weather in July will be in the foothills of the Himalayas, where short-term precipitation only refreshes, and the daytime air temperature does not exceed + 30 ° С. The rest of India's regions are either languishing from the heat, or going crazy from the abundant daily rainfall.
So, the average daytime air temperature in July in Delhi and Agra warms up to + 35 ° С and higher, and the heat subsides only at night, and even then not much, at night here +26 - + 27 ° С. In general, there is little precipitation, but much more than in June.

Twice as much precipitation in July as in June is observed in the east of the country - in Kolkata. It rains almost every day. At the same time, the air temperature is still increasing, and is, on average, +28 - + 34 ° С during the day, +26 - + 30 ° С at night.

A lot of precipitation in July (twice as much as in the east of the country) falls on the west coast of India. It rains here every day, without exception, the sky is covered with clouds, the air humidity is very high, gusty winds are walking along the streets, and the sea is constantly storming and throws algae and stones onto the beaches. The average daily air temperature in July in Mumbai is lower than in the central and eastern regions of the country, and is +29 - + 30 ° С, dropping to + 25 ° С at night. The sea water temperature off the coast of Mumbai in July is about + 25 ° C.

There is still a lot of rainfall in the beach resorts of India. There can be 5 sunny days for the whole month, and the rest of the time it will be cloudy or overcast. The water near the coast of the resorts in July is warmed up to + 28 ° C, but swimming is not so great, because it rains very often.

The rainy season continues in August. The exception is, traditionally, the mountainous regions and foothills of the Himalayas, the monsoons simply do not get here, and there is no intense heat here either. It is here that it is most comfortable to relax in the summer months, at altitudes up to 3,000 meters above sea level, the daytime air temperature rarely exceeds + 26 ° С, but at night it is very cool here - up to + 14 ° С.

Hot in August in the central regions of the country. In Delhi and Agra, the average daytime air temperature is +32 - + 33 ° С, at night - up to +25 - + 26 ° С. There is precipitation, but it is getting less than in the previous month. However, it can be windy in August and strong winds create dense dust clouds that impede comfortable visits and sightseeing.

In the east of the country, in Kolkata, in August, too, there is less precipitation, but insignificantly, they still fall here almost every day. There is little sun, constant cloudiness is observed, although there are no winds. At the same time, daytime and nighttime air temperatures are not much different - during the day here, on average, + 30 ° С, at night - up to + 26 ° С.

Thunderstorm fronts dominate the western coast of India in August, and it rains every day. Rainfall in Mumbai is very high, although slightly lower than in July, there are also winds and storms at sea, and the average daily air temperature in the city is still + 30 ° С.

A vacation to beach resorts in India in August is not a great idea. It is cloudy all the time, it rains constantly, the sea is stormy, and the air humidity remains very high. The average daytime air temperature in Goa and Kerala is + 28 ° С, at night it is slightly cooler - up to + 24 ° С. The water temperature off the coast of the resorts is quite high and is + 27 ° С.

Autumn in India

The autumn months are a great time to visit different corners of India and experience the contrast between north and south. It is in autumn that you can see and visit a maximum of regions, because the weather conditions are very good, practically everywhere in the country.

September is considered the last month of the rainy season. This month can be characterized by heavy rainfall, high air temperature and high humidity. However, the monsoon is gradually receding, and precipitation in September is significantly less than in the summer months. As before, it is most comfortable to travel along the foothills of the Himalayas (Kullu, Ladakh, Kashmir, Sikhim and others), there are no monsoon rains here, there is no sizzling heat, and the weather is quite suitable for hiking and long walks in the mountains. Be careful: many mountain passes are closed at the end of the month.

The central regions of India in September are also quite suitable for travel. The average daytime air temperature in Delhi and Agra is no more than + 33 ° С, at night it is very comfortable +23 - + 25 ° С. There is little precipitation here, mostly sunny weather.

In the east of the country in September, approximately the same temperature indicators are observed. The average daily air temperature in Kolkata is + 30 ° C, but there is much more rain than in the central regions of the country, and the air humidity remains high.

Even more precipitation will be on the west coast of India. In Mumbai in September there are more than 14 rainy days, the sky is constantly overcast, gusty winds are walking, and the sea is still very stormy, and the waves reach heights of 5-6 meters. The average daytime air temperature in September in Mumbai is + 29- + 30 ° С, at night it is slightly cooler - about + 24 ° С. At the same time, the second half of the month is less rainy, and the number of sunny days increases and even there is an opportunity to swim, because the water temperature is + 28 ° C, and the sea storms much less. Strong winds also subside, the average wind speed is 2 - 3 m / s.

The average daily air temperature in September in Goa and Kerala is +28 - + 29 ° С. But, the rains here do not recede yet, and pour most of the month. The water temperature off the coast of the resorts is, as before, + 27 ° С. If you go on vacation in the second half of the month, you can relax quite well and very cheaply, because the high season has not yet begun and prices are still low. However, catching good weather in September will not be easy (but possible!).

October is a month of transition in India. In October, the so-called post-monsoon season comes, that is, the movement of the monsoon begins in the opposite direction. It is in October that the monsoon season ends in most of the country, the long-awaited coolness comes to the central regions, and in the mountainous regions of the Himalayas, nature begins to fully prepare for winter.

In October, the difference between day and night air temperatures in the central regions of the country begins to increase. So, if in Delhi and Agra the average daytime air temperature rises to +32 - + 34 ° С, then at night it becomes quite cool, and the air temperature drops to +16 - + 20 ° С. At the same time, air humidity will be low, and precipitation will be insignificant, therefore, October is one of the best months to travel to these cities.

In the eastern regions of the country, precipitation in October decreases significantly. Here, in the sky, mainly, the bright sun shines, and white clouds float in the blue sky. In addition, it becomes calm, in general, the weather takes on its best form. During the day, the air in Calcutta warms up to +28 - + 35 ° С, and at night it cools down to +22 - + 25 ° С.

In the western regions of the country, the elements are also receding, and in October there is wonderful, wonderful weather. Rainfall in Mumbai in October is even less than in Kolkata, although the air humidity is still quite high. The average daytime air temperature in the city is + 32 ° С, dropping to + 24 ° С at night.

Beach resorts in India in October are again filled with tourists, as the rains are gradually receding here too. Rainy days are still possible here, but windy days are unlikely, usually the wind speed does not exceed 1 - 2 m / s in October. At the same time, it is better to rest in the second half of the month - there is a great chance not to catch rainy days at all. It is preferable to vacation in Goa in October, in Kerala there will be much more rainfall. The average daytime air temperature at these beach resorts is around + 31- + 32 ° С, and at night - +23 - + 24 ° С. The water near the coast of the resorts is warmed up to + 27 ° C, which means that water procedures will be more than pleasant. Since the rainy season is just over, the humidity is still quite high.

November is a great month, both for a beach holiday, and in general for traveling around the country. Almost all over India it is sunny and warm, rain is very rare. The only place where you should not meddle is, perhaps, the foothills and mountainous regions of the Himalayas - the weather here in November is extremely nasty, the air temperature drops significantly, nature freezes, the sky is covered with clouds, and instead of rain, it snows more and more often.

The same cannot be said about the central regions of the country. It is they who in November can take a break from the incinerating heat, because the air temperatures are more than comfortable: the average daytime air temperature in Delhi and Agra in November is kept at around +27 - + 29 ° C, but at night it can get significantly colder to +9 - + 12 ° С, so even warm clothes will come in handy here. There is practically no precipitation in November, and the weather pleases with the sun and warmth.

In the east of the country, in Kolkata, the average daytime air temperature in November is about + 29 ° С, at night it drops to + 19 ° С. The days are clear and dry. In November it is calm here and there is very little rainfall.

There is little rainfall on the west coast of India, and excellent weather is set here as well. The average daytime air temperature in November in Mumbai is about + 32 ° С, at night, about + 23 ° С. Here, too, the sun shines every day, all the winds subside, the sea finally becomes calm, and the water temperature in the Arabian Sea is + 28 ° C. The humidity is also low - in a word, it is very comfortable to rest.

Indian beach resorts beckon holidaymakers in November. This time is the beginning of the high season in Goa and Kerala, because here the weather is ideal: bright sun, comfortable air temperature, warm and calm sea, as well as incredibly bright colors of the surrounding nature - after all, after the rainy season, lush tropical vegetation is presented throughout beauty. The average daytime air temperature in the resorts is +32 - + 34 ° С, the night temperature drops to +22 - + 24 ° С. Sea water warms up to + 28 ° С, you can sunbathe and swim at your pleasure, go snorkeling and immerse yourself in an unusually bright and exotic underwater world. Rains in November are rare, but Kerala traditionally has more rainfall than Goa.

Precipitation in India is extremely uneven. The southwest monsoon comes to the country in the form of two main branches - the Bay of Bengal branch and the Arabian Sea branch. The latter branch advances towards the low pressure area above the Thar Desert and is about 3 times stronger than the Bay of Bengal branch. First, the monsoon reaches the territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal, then falls on the territory of the Malabar coast in Kerala, then reaches Mumbai, then - the central regions of the country. A branch of the Bay of Bengal moves northeast along the coast to the territory of Orissa, and then turns northwest to the Indo-Gangetic Plain.

Precipitation, on average, 60 -100 mm per year in the Thar desert in the west of the country, 300 - 400 mm of precipitation per year in the central regions of the Deccan, 3,000 - 6,000 mm of precipitation per year in the Eastern Himalayas and on the outer slopes Gat. Some mountain villages and hamlets receive up to 12,000 mm of precipitation per year (!!!). The greatest amount of precipitation is received by areas at an altitude of 1,070 to 2,090 meters above sea level, above 2,090 meters, their amount decreases sharply. Slopes above 5,000 meters above sea level never receive rainfall.

When to go to India. To determine the best time to travel in India, you first need to decide exactly where you want to go. India is such a large and so multifaceted country that it makes no sense to push visiting several regions of the country on a two-week vacation. India requires special attention and careful study. So first you need to understand what you want to get from India in the first place?

If a beach holiday is preferable for you, and you cannot imagine a vacation without the sea, then you are interested in the southern states - Goa and Kerala. It is worth going here from November to May - this is the high season, the hotels are overcrowded with tourists, but the weather here is also optimal for a beach holiday. Daily sun, high air temperatures, the sea is like fresh milk, and, practically, the complete absence of wind - isn't this a picture of heaven on earth? From May to October, you shouldn't even poke your nose here - despite the extremely low prices, the weather here will be hard labor, daily rains, winds and storms at sea will not give you pleasure, even for little money.

Those who do not tolerate heat and high humidity, or those who want to conquer the tops of the highest mountain peaks, should go to the Himalayas in the summer months - from June to September. There are no monsoons here, but there are quite comfortable, not hot, sunny days - the best time for conquering peaks, walking, hiking and trekking. In addition, in the summer, almost all mountain passes are open, which means that there is a great opportunity to get to the most untouched corners of nature.

Winter sports enthusiasts will also find something to do in India. During the winter months, from December to March, several ski resorts are open in the mountainous regions of the country. You will be pleasantly surprised by interesting tracks, equipped with the latest technology, and a good level of service, as well as quite affordable prices. However, the air temperature in winter in the mountains can fluctuate very strongly and sharply from 0 ° С to -20 ° С, snowfalls and strong winds are frequent, due to which roads are closed, passes become impassable, and airports often suspend flights due to poor weather conditions ... You just have to be prepared for such turns of events.

You can get acquainted with the rich history of the country and its unusual traditions and architecture by visiting the Golden Triangle of India (Delhi, Jaipur, Agra), as well as large cities in the central regions of the country. Their visit is best left for the cold season - from October to April. You will have to walk and walk a lot, and the relatively cool weather and the absence of rain will make visiting local attractions as comfortable as possible. In the period from April to October in cities there are very high air temperatures, it is not possible to walk and move around the city fully in such heat. In addition, in Rajasthan, the heat is complemented by debilitating dry winds from the deserts and an abundance of dust.

To visit the cities of eastern India, such as Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Bhagalpur and others, the period from November to May is perfect. At this time, there is practically no precipitation, the level of humidity is minimal, the weather is sunny, and you can comfortably see the sights. But in the period from May to October, it is better to avoid visiting these regions - they, literally, are flooded with tropical showers. In addition, summer air temperatures are catastrophically high, and in combination with almost one hundred percent air humidity creates the feeling of a "steam room", which not everyone can withstand.

It is recommended to visit the cities of the southeastern coast of India, such as Chennai, Pondicherry, Machilipatnam and others from January to April - at this time the air temperatures are minimal and the amount of precipitation is noticeably reduced. From August to December there is a lot of rainfall and dampness, and from April to August it is too hot.

The cities of the western coast of India, such as Mumbai, Ratnagiri and others, warm up very evenly throughout the year, and here you need to focus on the amount of precipitation. A relatively dry period is considered to be the time from November to May - these will be the most comfortable months for traveling to this part of India. But in the rest of the months (from May to October), the elements are raging here: endless tropical showers, coupled with the strongest winds that create a storm at sea, will not bring absolutely any pleasure, even to an unpretentious tourist.

Geography and relief

India is a country located in South Asia. Most of its territory is occupied by the Indian subcontinent. India is washed by the waters of the Indian Ocean: from the southwest - by the Arabian Sea, from the southeast - by the Bay of Bengal. The total area of the country's territory is 3 million 288 thousand square meters. km.

From the north to the north-east of India, the Himalayas stretch in an arc. In the extreme north is the Karakorum, and in the northeast - the average height of the Assaman-Burma mountains and the Shillong plateau.

In India, there are places of glaciation, the main centers of glaciers include: Karakorum, the southern slopes of Zaskar in the Himalayas. The average height of the snow line decreases in the west from 5300 m to 4500 in the eastern regions. The glaciers are fed by the transport of snow by strong gusts of wind from the slopes and by snowfall during the summer monsoons.

Remark 1

Global warming is negatively affecting glaciers.

Climatic zones

The climatic conditions of India are predetermined by its geographical position relative to the mainland, the Indian Ocean, the presence of the Himalayas and the Thar Desert. The Himalayas and the Hindu Kush mountain range (Pakistan) prevent the penetration of cold air from Central Asia, favor the preservation of a warmer climate than in other territories located at the same latitudes.

Most of the rainfall from June to October is provided by the southwestern monsoons, which are attracted by the Thar Desert.

Different indicators of temperature and volumes of precipitation make it possible to distinguish several large climatic zones and subzones:

  • tropical humid climate - tropical monsoon, savannah climate;
  • tropical dry climate - tropical arid, semiarid savannah, tropical and subtropical savannah;
  • subtropical monsoon climate.

Tropical humid climate... The climatic zone runs along the east coast to the Ganges delta. It is observed in areas with high temperatures not falling below +18 ºС, two subtypes are distinguished. Tropical monsoon, common in the southwestern regions (Malabar coast, Nicobar, Andaman, Laccadive islands), high and moderate temperatures all year round, high annual precipitation - more than 2000 mm (the largest amount occurs in May-November).

Savannah climate prevails in most of the interior regions of Hindustan, winter and the beginning of the summer period are long and dry, the temperature hovers around +18 ºС. Summer is very sultry, the temperature can go up to +50 ºС. The rainy season lasts from June to September. The average annual rainfall ranges from 750 to 1500 mm (depending on the area). Since September, the northeastern monsoon blows, especially active in Tamil Nadu. Rainfall throughout the region is heavily influenced by the monsoons. In the area of the Ganges delta, the largest amount of precipitation falls: up to 1500-2000 mm (in the western regions) and 2000-3000 mm - in the eastern. The warmest months are April and May (average temperatures + 25-35 ºС), the coldest is January (temperature + 14-25 ºС).

Tropical dry climate... It is typical for areas where evaporation rates from the ground exceed the amount of precipitation. The seven-arid savanna climate occurs east of the Western Ghats and south of Cancer (west of Andhra Pradesh, interior Tamil Nadu, central Maharashtra, east of Karnataka). The average annual rainfall is between 400 and 750 mm. Monsoons sometimes lag behind, leading to droughts. The lowest temperatures are observed in December - + 20-24 ºС. From March to May the weather is very dry and hot, the average temperature can reach +32 ºС.

Arid climate observed in the west of the state of Rajasthan. There is less than 300 mm of precipitation per year. Precipitation is unstable and has the appearance of rare showers. In some areas, precipitation may be absent for up to 2 years. The hottest months are May and June, the temperature is up to + 35 ºС. Daily highs can reach +50 ºС. In winter, in some areas, the temperature can drop to 0 ºС and below, which is caused by the arrival of cold air from Central Asia. Daily temperature fluctuations are significant. In the southern regions, winters are milder, average temperatures during the day are +29 ºС, at night - +12 ºС. Summers are dry and hot (daytime temperatures - up to +41 ºС, night temperatures - +29 ºС and above. Before the arrival of monsoons, the humidity rises significantly, which, combined with high temperatures, has unfavorable sensations. With the arrival of monsoons, temperatures drop to + 35 ºС (during the day ) and +27 ºС (at night).

Tropical and subtropical savanna climate observed in the regions east of the Thar Desert: the eastern territories of the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan, Haryana, the southern regions of Punjab. Haryana's climatic conditions are similar to those of the plains. Summers are dry and hot, temperatures can reach + 50 ºС, winters are cold (average January temperature is + 1 ºС. The hottest months are May and June. The coldest are December and January. The amount of precipitation varies greatly in different regions, due to the features of the relief. More total precipitation falls near the Sivalik mountains, least of all - in the area of the Avali hills. 80% of precipitation occurs during the monsoon period (June-September). The climate of Punjab is characterized by lower temperatures: in summer - +47 ºС, in winter - -4 ºС. In the eastern regions there is a transition from a tropical arid climate to a humid subtropical climate, where annual temperature fluctuations decrease, with an average rainfall ranging from 300 to 650 mm.

Subtropical monsoon climate... It is found in most of the plains in northern India. It is characterized by hot summers and cold winters. There is practically no precipitation. Their number is greatly influenced by a strong anticyclone and air currents coming from Central Asia. Average annual precipitation is about 1000 mm (western regions) and more than 2500 mm (northeastern regions).

Areas of high zonation

The regions of the far north of India can be characterized as regions of high zonation, which include the states:

  • Kashmir,
  • Jamma,
  • Sikkim,
  • Arunachal Pradesh,
  • Himachal Pradesh,
  • Uttaranchal.

In these territories, there is a decrease in temperatures with height, significant daily temperature fluctuations. Most of the precipitation occurs in winter and spring.

Figure 1. Areas of high zonation. Author24 - online exchange of student papers

Areas located south of the Himalayan mountains are better protected from the effects of winter cold air masses. The leeward northern side of the slopes receives less precipitation. Most precipitation falls at an altitude of 1000 to 2100 m. Above, their amount decreases sharply.

Climate of India: when is it better to go to India and when are the most favorable climatic conditions. Features of the climate of India.

  • Tours for May Worldwide
  • Last Minute Tours Worldwide

India stretches from north to south for two thousand kilometers, and the height difference of Indian lands is almost 9000 meters, so there is always a place in India where the climate is comfortable and pleasant. And if snow falls in the foothills of the Himalayas in November, then tourists flock to Goa at this time to open the beach season.

The Himalayas provide natural protection from cold Asian winds, which is why India is much warmer than other countries in the same latitudes. The Thar Desert attracts summer monsoons from the west, so it rains from June to October across much of India. Monsoon is, in fact, India's main supplier of weather. Summer monsoons, passing the ocean, are saturated with moisture along the way, which is then poured into endless rains. The rest of the time over India there are monsoons from land, bringing coolness and clear skies.

Three climatic seasons alternate in India during the year. November-February is characterized by dry, sunny and cool weather. From March to June it is dry and very hot. From July to the end of September, the sky is overcast and it rains incessantly, which, combined with high temperatures, creates a suffocating humid atmosphere.

Different latitudes, altitudes and remoteness from the ocean create a variety of local climatic conditions: from the arid Thar Desert, where rainfall is 100 mm per year, to the wettest spot in the Khasi Mountains, where rainfall is 12,000 mm per year. The average winter temperature on the plains of India ranges from 15 ° C in the north to 30 ° C in the south. In summer, the temperature evens out and stays in the range from 28 to 35 ° C. In the mountains, it is naturally cooler, in winter the temperature drops below zero, and in summer it is comfortable 20-25 ° C.

Therefore, when planning a trip to India, do not be lazy, get acquainted with the peculiarities of the climate of the places that you are going to visit.
