The N95 smartphone, for all its advancement (as of 2007), had a fairly large number of shortcomings, and Nokia decided to improve and modernize it.

A year later, in the fourth quarter of 2008, they announced and released a new flagship of the N series, which was called the Nokia N85. This device contains absolutely all the functions that may be required from a smart phone, and even more.

The Nokia H85 mobile phone, like the H95, has a rare form factor - it's a double slider, that is, its front panel can move up and down, exposing the numeric keypad, and down, showing the control buttons for a fancy media player.

The entire body of the Nokia H85 slider is molded from plastic, there are no metal inserts on it. The device does not slip out of the hands, and here is a great merit of its weight, which amounted to almost 130 grams. The heaviness of the N85 is pleasant, it gives a feeling of reliability. The phone does not creak, and even after prolonged use it does not have a backlash in the upper part. Nokia N85 slider costing about 12,000 rubles is available in two body colors - black (Nokia N85 Black) and copper (Nokia N85 Copper).

Let's continue the description of the Nokia N85 cell phone and move on to examining its technical characteristics. The front panel of this flagship is decorated with a large screen with a diagonal of 2.6 inches and a resolution of 240x320 pixels. It is made using AMOLED technology, and perhaps its only drawback is that it is not touch sensitive. This display does not fade in the sun and can display up to 8 lines of text and 3 service lines.

Nokia N85 is a full-fledged smartphone with Series 60 platform and Symbian operating system. This makes it possible to use not only pre-installed programs, but also install additional ones, since not only a lot of utilities have been written for this mobile OS, but a lot. The user will not have problems finding the right software.

The GPS receiver is another component of the Nokia N85 cell phone. It works in conjunction with Nokia Maps second generation navigation software, which can be replaced with any other. The time for determining the current coordinate after the first switching on in this model is only 4 minutes.

In this mobile phone, in addition to all of the above, there is a camera. It is very powerful here - 5-megapixel, and it boasts Carl Zeiss optics, dual LED flash and, of course, autofocus. Pictures taken with the Nokia N85 are indistinguishable from those taken with a digital camera.

Additional specifications of the powerful dual slider Nokia H85 include WiFi and Bluetooth modules, 72 MB of internal memory, a slot for microSD cards with a capacity of up to 8 GB, and a 1200 mAh battery, which, with intensive use, discharges in about three days.

What did not like

and now the most interesting. Terrifying build quality, the Chinese do better. Polohoy sound from the speakers - I used to have a sagem my700x - in comparison with it, nokia would have been better not equipped with speakers. when I put it in a cover, the display constantly turns over (a cover with a magnetic clasp) data periodically disappears from the flash drive - I dug into the net, it turned out to be such a disease in high-speed flash drives.

What did you like

quite a powerful device, a good camera, good sound in headphones, a wonderful battery, a large flash drive (8Gb).

What did not like

buggy, turns itself off and on without a pin, the speakers are quiet. I also have N76, so you can hear it perfectly! And when watching a video, it ALWAYS turns off! and there are no shortcomings))) I have been using it since 2009! it's good that there is still N76)))

What did you like

the camera is good and probably everything)

What did not like

terribly slows down and hangs, once I had to pull out the battery to turn it off, the case staggers, some kind of garbage happens with the music player, I press play, a song appears (album picture, song title, etc.) and at the bottom under the name of the song writes that Opens and immediately switches to another song and there is the same garbage, it starts playing only new songs that you added, and when you go back to the list of songs, next to the song icon is "!" and when you click on the song, writes that the error (((

What did you like

good camera, not bad macro quality, not bad speakers

What did not like

What did you like

camera, player, radio, wi-fi

What did not like

very quiet sound. After two months, the front panel and the battery cover began to fall off.

What did you like

moves down

What did not like

a very weak battery, it is discharged at the most unnecessary moment, it often bugs, the flash is weak, the screen is smudged and the calendar just shows the wrong date

What did you like

a large screen, a lot of memory, pictures are no worse than a camera. Quality assembly, a little resistant to scratches, the phone has everything you need.

What did not like

The charging of this device is strictly individual, that is, the usual thin Nokia is not suitable. Since I took a supported headphone jack sometimes it goes wrong. The speaker is rather weak compared to any even old and dead Nokia. The display is not very bright + stripes run across it. This, of course, is barely noticeable, but when you look for a long time, it strains. For some time the camera did not work, then it worked by itself. The battery has become very bad to keep, that is, 3 hours of music with the Internet and ICQ and the phone is almost completely discharged. I use a 2 gig card and when I need to pull it out I have to look for something thin to click on it. Well, and so on little things because of a clumsy system (for example, through a standard browser you press back or cancel and it just crashes). The speakers are extremely disgusting. Although there are two of them, they sound much weaker and much worse than on the Nokia 6120 (1 speaker) or on the n79, although the speakers on the n79 are the same. The volume is small, the sound is constantly rattling and there is not even a hint of bass. So in terms of sound, comparing with 6120-heaven and earth. And it's stupid to compare with n73. All in all, it was very disappointing. One of the shortcomings I also think that this phone is a slider, and a double one (somewhere in a year the cable will fray) By the way, for some reason, the "Navi wheel" does not work.

What did you like

I bought this device a couple of months ago. Large display, 3.5 mm output, camera for video calling, a normal Nokia 5 mega camera (no blue tones, with more or less natural colors) and a wonderful flash (dual LED, brighter than on n79), of course Simba 9.3, two built-in speakers , radio, and of course, the appearance and the low cost at the moment attracted attention. I got this device from a Finnish assembly =)

What did not like

Backlash of the slider mechanism, "blunt" left / right function key, sticking of the joystick (down buttons), the lock button broke off, the battery dangles without paper (pads), the inability to play uncompressed video.

What did you like

High functionality and performance, good camera (in good light), minijack, good slider mechanism (albeit with a backlash after a week of use), wifi, usb charging.

What did not like

Constantly overloaded or simply turned off from work (about 1 time per hour). Synchronization with the computer cannot be performed due to constant reboots or shutdowns. Do not buy this device. For the first time I came across such an unfinished Nokiai model. I have been using Nokia devices for many years, but this one just disappointed me and surprised me that such a reputable company can produce cell phones of such low quality and with such low quality software. I don't recommend anyone to buy it.

What did you like

I did not see any advantages for this phone, since since the purchase at the end of October 2008 it has been in warranty repair for the third time (almost 4 months out of these six months it was repaired, and the rest of the time it was buggy). Pros: It's the company's claimed design and versatility, plenty of memory, large display, good GPS capabilities, but the implementation of all this is simply unsatisfactory.

What did not like

As you know, the disadvantages cover the advantages ... :) I wanted to buy! But it’s good to look through the comments here! .. Guys, it’s a nightmare! .. Everyone here has shortcomings and, unfortunately, they are repeated and the same huge disadvantages! It’s spinning in my head: It creaks, backlash, slows down .. Hmm for such a price ... at first 21 thousand .. and now it’s clear that the rating has dropped due to shortcomings .. it costs 16 thousand ... even for such a price I don’t want to take it! ..Alas, disappointed the model!....

) the novelty has acquired a more attractive appearance, which will become an additional incentive for its purchase.

The Finnish manufacturer apparently came to the conclusion that the existing functional stuffing is enough to satisfy the needs of buyers. In any case, nothing has changed dramatically in the hardware characteristics of the N-series over the past year.

At the moment, Nokia's key task is to "clean up", to polish the already existing technical capabilities, that is, to use them, as they say, to the fullest. When this is done, the portfolio will include more advanced "mobile computers" (with a larger display, including touch, with an 8-megapixel camera).

However, this should be expected only after six months. And the latest Nseries update is essentially just a cosmetic overhaul of the presented models. In particular, such devices include N79 and N85. The latter became our test subject.

Appearance

When comparing the model with the immediate progenitor - Nokia N95 8GB - one cannot but pay attention to the significant step forward that was made by the designers of the Finnish company. Despite the fact that “on paper” the dimensions of these smartphones are almost the same, the N85 looks more compact.

The front panel of the device is made of black glossy plastic. As always, the principle “beauty requires sacrifice” works - no one has canceled fingerprints. The back panel has a brown tint and carries the wavy patterns that have already managed to gain a foothold on the N-series models.

In general, the design is consistent with the latest Nokia smartphones. Of course, the new "glossy" exterior will also have opponents: the more aggressive design of the N95 8GB is also attractive, especially for the male audience.

Like its predecessor, the N85 is designed as a double-sided slider. Up the device opens easily; when opening an additional block, more effort is required. There is no backlash between the wings, and judging by the build quality, you should not be afraid of it - the halves do not stagger either when folded or when closed. By the way, the back of the front sash is made of metal and painted to match the back panel.

The numeric keypad does not occupy the entire area of the lower half: on the sides there is enough free space on which the slides connecting the slider are located. There are no visible borders between the keys, except that at a certain angle you can see horizontal stripes separating the rows.

The navigation keys are also made in a single block; unlike the numeric keypad, their symbols are not visible without backlighting. Fortunately, mechanical buttons are used here, not touch buttons. Two soft keys, "Menu" and "C" are located at a decent distance from each other.

The buttons for accepting and canceling a call are placed vertically, which does not cause any inconvenience. The remaining free space was used to install an additional bookmark shortcut key.

However, it was not without touch elements: the proprietary Navi wheel can be configured as a touch wheel, which is not new for Finnish smartphones. Nothing has changed in the implementation of this function. On the one hand, large lists (say, a music library) are scrolled much faster in this way, however, due to the small physical size, false clicks are possible (when pressing the central key, an unintended shift to the side may occur).

The block of additional keys also has icons that are indistinguishable without illumination. This was done in order to highlight only the symbols that are active in a particular application: rewind in a music player, zoom when viewing, photographing, etc.

The keyboard lock key has been transformed into a slider located on the sidebar. This is a very good move, because when folded, the device can handle almost all tasks.

Display

The matrix used in the N85 has a resolution of 240x320 with a diagonal of 2.6 inches. The manufacturer's fidelity to the QVGA format is already outperforming its competitors. With a rather large physical size of the display, the lack of active pixels begins to be felt.

OLED matrix technology: color reproduction and brightness are on top, with a significant viewing angle, the shades still change a little. The screen copes with direct sunlight, but only at the maximum backlight level. Of course, there is a light sensor.

As usual with new products today, among the functions of the N85 there is also an accelerometer. Its practical need is rather arbitrary: there is no urgent need for it, as in devices controlled via a touch screen.

Say, how to type on a alphanumeric keyboard with a horizontal display orientation? Or use an additional keyboard in portrait mode? With the accelerometer disabled, this will not happen.

The motion sensor itself seemed not as sensitive as on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic : in order to achieve the desired effect, you need to do some magic with the device's position in space.

Interface, multimedia

Smartphone software platform - Symbian v.9.3, S60 3rd edition FP2. The latest update primarily affected the reworking of the interface, the developers tried to make it more attractive.

First of all, this is the rejection of abrupt transitions, the use of a smooth change in the image, which manifests itself, for example, when the image being viewed is enlarged. In a word, the glossy touch of the new interface is perfectly combined with the appearance of the smartphone itself.

Another thing is that the implementation of these developments does not always leave a pleasant impression. From time to time you have to put up with brakes, jerks in motion, which seemed to want to get rid of.

When you press a separate button located to the right of the navigation key, a special, "multimedia" menu opens, consisting of the items "Internet", "Music", "Maps", "Games", "Gallery" and "Contacts". The last point is placed among the multimedia capabilities of the smartphone due to the frequent use of the phone book.

This menu is designed with tabs that guide you to the main features of the sections. In essence, this makes it easier to access applications bypassing the familiar menu.

The smartphone comes with an 8 GB microSD card. The card serves as a kind of replacement for the similar amount of memory already pre-installed in the Nokia N95 8GB. The advantage of such a solution will be easier data exchange (for example, via a card reader).

Communication options

Internet capabilities are increasingly associated with the Symbian platform itself, without access to the network its functionality is somewhat limited. Now the status "online" is necessary not only for surfing in the browser, but also for accessing the music store, Internet radio, downloading new games and video clips.

Nokia does not forget about Ovi either, insistently offering to upload its photo and video materials to its own page within this portal.

Bluetooth works correctly, there is no need to turn it on / off for preventive purposes (which is sometimes required in other Nokia smartphones). The data transfer rate is 160-200 kb / s when receiving files and 70-100 kb / s when sending.

Wi-Fi, as before, left a pleasant impression. Enabling / disabling the module is fast, without delay the search for wireless networks is also performed.

Musical possibilities

At the top end is a standard 3.5 mm audio jack. In terms of music playback quality, the N85 is in no way inferior to the XpressMusic models. This once again emphasizes that the "specialization" of the Nseries is wider than that of devices focused exclusively on musical capabilities.

The playback volume through the headphones is sufficient even at the level of 70-80%. But the external speakers upset. As is customary in novelties from Nokia, they are located on one end. Already at medium volume, the speakers begin to wheeze; It is not necessary to blame the low quality of the tracks themselves for this, because the “factory” melodies were played.

N-Gage

The new N-Gage gaming platform is pre-installed on the smartphone, so there is no need to download additional applications from the Internet. Together with the platform, the user is offered a list of games (there are more than a dozen of them).

When installed, each application takes from 2 to 20 MB of memory, so the developers have given the owners the right to choose. The list includes games produced both by Nokia itself (Snakes, Space Impact) and other famous companies (Sims, FIFA 08).

Frankly speaking, the graphics quality is not standard, which was also affected by the technical characteristics of the display matrix itself. Games also have room to grow: for example, I would like to see support for the accelerometer.

The second component of N-Gage is the basis for communication. N-Gage Arena offers both direct chats and online games between gamers.

Navigation options

Despite the prevailing skepticism about GPS-navigation in Nokia smartphones, it should be admitted that it is implemented better in the N85. The speed of establishing a connection with satellites has increased (although it still loses to other navigation offers), there are no warnings about the need to go outside, which is exactly where you are.
