Herboral Family - Ardeidae

In Belarus - N. N. Nycticorax (subspecies inhabit the entire area of the species within the eastern hemisphere).

Very rare irregularly nesting migratory view. The nesting was first proved in 1999, when several jacks of Kvkvy were found in a large colony of gray herkels at Pripyat at the mouth of the river. Lan in Luninetsky district.

A small heron is somewhat larger than the crows, with a long beak and relatively short legs. Coloring of adult birds is pretty contrasting: the top of the head and shoulders are black with a metal sampling, a forehead, a strip under the eye, chest and belly white, wings and tail gray. On the head - a pair of long white feathers, in the form of a dwoking hanging on the back. Blywing black, feet yellow, Radugina Eyes bright red. The plumage of young birds is darker, with dark brown longitudinal pendins on the chest. The weight of adult males and females 550-650 g, the length of the body is 58-65 cm, the scope of the wings 95-112 cm.

The characteristic feature of the quacaw is its mainly twilight-night lifestyle. Therefore, even in the nesting places, the bird is not particularly noticeable. The voice is repeated with equal intervals of "KVAK ... KVAK ... KVAK ..." - more often it is possible to hear from flying birds at night.

Keeps in thickets of shrubs and surface vegetation off the coast of reservoirs.

Information on the ecology of the reproduction of this species in the republic is fragmentary. It has been established that KwAQA in Belarus inhabits crop thick urema, extensive reeded harvesters, swampy, lowering the thick wood and shrub vegetation of lowlands.

The spring arrives at the end of April - early May. Quake nests, as a rule, colonies, often together with other types of birds (Herons, Grachters, etc.). In our conditions (due to the rarity of the species), it is settled in separate pairs or small groups. The first colonial settlement of birds in the amount of 27 pairs was registered on 07.28.1999 in the largest colony of gray, large white Herlin and Big Baklan in the reserve "mouth of Lani" (Luninetsky Rn). In 2004, at least three pairs nest in this place.

The nests places low in the thick branches of the lower part of the crown of trees or on high bushes and uses them usually for a number of years. Occasionally nests in reed thickets not far from the water. The nest has a typical structure of the structure - in the form of an inverted cone with loose translucent walls and a flattened tray. It is built (rather casually) of dry branches of trees and cane stems. Nest with a diameter of 40-80 cm.

In full masonry 4-5, occasionally 6 or 3 bright bluish-green with a matte shell of eggs. Egg (data from Europe): weight 32 g, length 49 mm (43-58 mm), diameter 35 mm (31-39 mm). Often the surface of the shell is covered with small lime tubercles.

The egg laying begins from the end of April and later. Both birds are based on 21-22, rare 23 days. The year is one brood.

In the fall flying to the end of September.

Fish, frogs and water invertebrates predominate in the nutrition.

In the 1990s. The view was very rare irregularly nesting species, the number was estimated at 0-5 pairs. In recent years, birds were observed in Maloritsky, Luninetsk, Drogichinsky, Ivatsevsky, Brest districts and on the rowing channel in Brest. According to the APB, the bird was also observed in the Grodno and Minsk region.

Kwakva is listed in the Red Book of Belarus since 1993, the status of the form in the third edition of the Red Book of RB - IV Category.

Maximum age registered in Europe.

Study history

Ordinary Kwakva, or Night Heron - Bird of the Racual Family.

Spread

Ordinary Kwakva inhabited almost all of America, Africa, southern and middle Europe and Asia. European quacs are flying, winter in Equatorial Africa. There is no ordinary quax only in Australia. In Russia, a large number of Nests Kvakv can be found in the Volga delta.

Appearance

Kwakva has a short neck and short, but strong and powerful beaks compared to other herons. Legs are also shorter than the rest of the Herlin. The male in the marriage dress has a black with a greenish chopper and the same color back. Wings gray. Belubo and boc white. On the back of the spring we grow 2-4 long narrow white pen. Beak black, legs - with long fingers yellow or pinkish. The female has a similar color. Young birds are dark brown with longitudinal pendins. Pouched chicks white.

Reproduction

Quāns nest in colonies with other herons or their own colonies up to a thousand couples on trees or bushes. If the nesting place is far from human housing, they can also nest on the fears of the cane. Kvakva's nest builds from small twigs, where the female puts 3-4 eggs. After 21 days, chicks hatch, usually with a difference of 1-2 days, in the sequence in which eggs were postponed. Chicks feed both parents, first tightening them in the beak semi-stewed food. Later, when the chicks are growing, they are beginning to feed ordinary food.

Lifestyle

Quānis are active mainly in the mornings and evenings, in the afternoon sitting on the branch. However, in the nest time they are active and day. They nest about thick overgrown water bodies on the forest edge or in the forest.

In the summer, 2-4 long pen grows on the back of the back, they are about 5 cm long, they are approximately 5 cm than females. In the summer, the beak is black, at another time black and gray with light edges. The eyes are big, summer coral red. Young birds remotely resemble. They are brown with grayish-yellow pendins on each red legs, and the eyes are yellow.

On the yellowish throat, too, there are brown longitudinal pepling. On the second summer of young birds, you can still distinguish from older: their plumage is more matte, brownish, color contrasts are more blurred, and the jewelry of feathers is shorter.

Food

Kwquips feed in main fish and frogs, as well as water insects.

What to say, KvAKV lives now a lot. They know how to take care of themselves. Any water source, natural or artificial, if there is a fish in the water, as waters are quax and hunt. We have already photographed them so much that my husband now refuses to bring the camera on them. And I loved them, I love. Therefore, I decided to write about them quite detailed, the benefit found interesting materials, and I do not consider photos in the archive :)

Ordinary Quak (Nycticorax Nycticorax אנפת לילה)

Kvakv has a centerless such figure, not like any other hernel.

The grace, the subtlety of the antennae is not at all :) there is no such characteristic disproportionately, I would say, tragically long neck :). The neck is almost just not there :) At the same time, she has some kind of unusually beautiful quax plastic. Some of her postures resemble medieval engravings :)

The top of the head and shoulder feathers with a bluish metal sampling. The forehead, the outbreak, and the abdominal side of the body white. Wings, loin and tail gray. Bearing black, Rainbill red. Length of the wing 26-30 cm. Bird weight from 550 to 800g.

Usually, quax yellow legs, in the marriage season and the nesting season they are red, also on the heads of the bird appear long narrow adorning white feathers. Feathers can be and with yellow legs too :) I don't even know what to say - we almost do not see Kvakv without these feathers. So understand when they begin and ends the marriage season is difficult.

White feathers on the head is an additional reason for which Many people love, and if you add more red eyes, in which there is something demonic, all this makes it even more interesting.

About feathers who almost led to the destruction of the species.

Beautiful decorative feathers on the Kvkvy's head, as well as the egretki by small white herons were the cause of almost complete destruction of these birds in Western Europe in the first half of the 20th century. These feathers were fashionable to decorate the ladies and men's hats in the late 19th - early 20th century.

The last Chinese emperor. Wikipedia photo. Pay attention to his hat with a plumage of feathers very similar to white feathers Quake. How many birds should be killed for one such plumage, if one quack can have a maximum of 4 such fepre?
For the sake of fashion killed many birds. Mass hunting for these feathers ceased only with modified fashion.

A little story ...

In his book, written in the late 19th century, Henry Baker Tristram writes about Kwaks in our territories: "Kwakva is found in small quantities, never seen flocks. Meeting in the area and in the Ginosar Valley."
So why can so much quax now see in Israel? There are statistics since the 50s of the last century.
In 1954, Quakes began to nest in the area of sources (עמק המעיינות).
In 1959, KVAKV nests, small white pin and yellow herds on the banks of the River Alexander were discovered. The appearance of these three species in Israel is related, obviously with irrigation and drying of antiocus marshes in the south-west of Turkey in the 50s of the last century. The main food of the three of these kinds of fish. Industrial fish ponds, having had in Israel at the same time in large quantities, turned out to be an excellent substitute for the dried swamp. The development of fisheries throughout Israel contributes to the prosperity of this species.

Who can be seen in Israel.

In Israel, there is a quax population of three types: permanent population, birds on the span and quacs flying to nesting in the summer, most of these arriving nests in the area of fish ponds north of Header. Separate sources also speak of winter quarters.
The migratory quacs come from us in the fall, in September-October, when European quacs fly to wintering in Africa. In the spring, from mid-March to the beginning of May, you can see the returning flocks. From the 80s of the last century in Israel there are more than 2000 nests. Often these nesting Herkels - constantly live with us, part of the nesting flew for the summer.

Kvakva always has a good appetite, simply speaking, it is voracious.

Trying to justify the part of his Latin name "Night", Kwakva sleeps in the field of quax nights, and at night hunts. Immediately after sunset, with loud cries, the birds start their flight towards the facilities of the feeding: fish ponds, irrigated fields, puddles, river shores, etc. In the nesting season, Quakes are very active in the afternoon.
Their food is: fish, crayfish, frogs, lizards, turtles, small rodents, eggs and chicks of other species, bear, dragonflies, singing birds, bats. Good appetite in Kvakva is always, it is very voracious.

For fishing fish, Kvaquer has several systems: "standing", standing without movement, without moving, waiting for the fish approach. "Slow Motion", slowly moves to not sigh the fish. "In flight" flies over water, freezes in the air and dives for fish. "The image of the shade": reveals the wings and goes so that the wings make the shadow above the water to attract the fish that wants to hide.

It is noticed that Kwakva can still catch fish on the bait. They throw bread in the water, and grab the fish that sails is this bread. Here is a small video without text, about how it does it. Please note how she breaks bread into smaller pieces and how not trying to catch the fish too large for her. This is not an Israeli video, although it seemed to me that we were removed similar.

Usually it catches a small fish, up to 60g, which swallows entirely. Kwakva can swallow fish and up to 120 grams weighing, a quarter of its own weight. If Kwakva caught fish with a lot of weight, it is obvious that this is a sick and weak fish and stands for someone to remove it from society of other fish.

Honestly, it always seems to me on the eye that these fishes who catch quacs, quite worthy candidates for festive geoffs weigh no less than 500 grams ... But it is not realistic with the weight of the bird itself from 550 grams :)

Now, in order to eat the fish, you need to cook it to turn your head in the Quakin stomach :) Otherwise it will not be included.

Turns the fish of quax light thump

The final swallowing is accompanied by not too aesthetic stretching of the neck, which at Quákva suddenly detects :) For a short time, the fish is right in the neck and precisely because of this we have a neck and see :)

Mostly Quāvas catch fish on industrial fish ponds and are considered to be pests of agriculture. The owners of the ponds are trying to remove KvAKV from ponds with all possible ways. Despite your small size, the quachers cause significant damage to farms. Fish farms are trying to drive a quax with humane ways: frightening, grids and ropes over ponds to prevent birds fish. Kwakva knows how to figure out. Little can prevent her ... But I saw one nesting colony on the territory of the fisheries, which set fire. Of course, the birds left her.

This is my photo from the opening. A couple of lower photos on the theme of birds dieting on the hands of a man. If on the left of the pitching of the kingwher, it is confused in the grid, then KwAQ to the right seems diving in the water. But actually it is not. Kwakva, as well as kingfisher, confused in the grid, just did not show this grid. Near this photo of Kvquach hangs a sign with a very long story, about how the photographer tried to save Kwakva on the fish pond, but the ladder was not given to him, because At the same time the grid could suffer. Leaving the bird to die, the photographer began to reflect on the last day of the bird ...
But, once again, I repeat, quacks - birds smart and only units die, and most flourishes and safely causes damage to fisheries ...

Quān love hunting small groups ...

... large groups, dozens, hundreds of birds together. In contrast, during the flights, Kvquach prefer to fly over one or small groups.
Hundreds of birds hunting together, we somehow did not meet, and such groups as in this photo are very attractive for ....

... Hunters of photo lovers of birds.

About family life.

In recent years, the quantity has increased significantly and can be found in almost any nesting colony, along with other species, such as Egyptian herons and small white herons. Kvaquers can take chicks for a year twice.
If in the past quacks nests mainly in the north, today it can be found in a variety of parks in the center of the country.

Three these species nest all together, forming mixed colonies together with other species, with Egyptian herons and small white herons. They are clearly visible in the photo. In such colonies, we have seen another Karavaek and Egyptian hernel. Such colonies are all over the country from the north and to Safari in Ramat Ghana in the south.

Construction of the nest - the case is not easy ...

... and not easy, the branches are very heavy ...

Just a pigeon of the world of some kind, and in fact - Kwakva :)

The nest is built of vegetable materials, the diameter of the socket is about 45 centimeters. The nesting takes place in the nest colonies since March. The nests build on trees at an altitude of up to 50 meters.

Someone is already sitting in the nest, and someone is engaged in courtships.

The female postpones 3-5 eggs brightly turquoise.

After 24-26 days, chicks hatch, usually with a difference of 1-2 days, in the sequence in which eggs were postponed. Here on the left of the chick of the Egyptian heron, they all nest all together, each other on his head in scary cramped. A quax chick of brown, in spots similar to a small dinosaurica :) Chicks hatch with open eyes, in the fluff.

After 10 days, the chicks get out of the nest and hide among the branches. When parents arrive to feed chicks, they call chicks a ritual way, which includes turning white long feathers and fears. Otherwise they will be attacked by chicks that attack all someone else's. Chicks feed both parents, first tightening them in the beak semi-stewed food. Later, when the chicks are growing, they are beginning to feed ordinary food.
Please note here is specifically visible red legs complete with white feathers.

Already in 2 months the chicks are able to fly. Despite the excellent flight opportunities in such an early age, the chicks return to the night in the nest to their parents at the first time of their independence.

Up to three years old poultry look completely different, they are brown with white spots.

Something interesting about Kvaquak:

On Latin Kvakva called Nycticorax Nycticorax, where Corax is a raven, and Nuctus is the night, it was believed that the sounds published by the bird are similar to Vorona. And in Russian their voices sounds like a kind of \\\\ "KVAK, KVAK, KVAK ", repeated with interruptions. Thanks to this KVA and the Russian name of the bird appeared. In general, their voices are stunning :) Docoing, stunting and all on the theme of Kwa :) I did not hear the trial :) These are shockful birds, especially during nesting.
An indication of the nightlife of birds is in several languages, in Hebrew, English and German. This was indicated at its difference from other herls.

The Heron is mentioned in the Torah as a bird that is prohibited. "Stork and all kinds of herbal ..." (דברים י"ד, 18)

In Greek mythology, it is described that at first all birds ate the same meal. And suddenly the herons found the opportunity to find food in the water. They boasted these their capabilities and the fact that they can swim better Poseidon, God of the Seas. As a result, they were punished and lost the opportunity to swim. Now they are forced to catch the fish patiently standing on the shore.

The longest life of the quacaw in nature is 21 years old. This information is obtained by ringing.

Nycticorax Nycticorax has 4 subspecies:

N. n. Nycticorax is distributed in Africa, Europe and Asia
N. n. Hoactli North America to Central America
N. n. Obscures Central America to Fire Earth
N. n. Falklandicus Enleag Falkland Islands

Kwakva - common bird. Nests on all continents, except Australia and Antarctic, preferring hot and tropical areas.

The world population of KVAKV is stable in size, but is unknown exact number of birds.
The expansion of agricultural areas, mostly fish ponds, as well as parks and pine groves, made it possible to increase the number of nesting birds.

Real urban quax.

It turns out that in the urban center of the most urban city of Israel itself, in Tel Aviv on the square of the kings of Israel Rabin, a new feathered resident appeared in an ecologically clean basin - Kvakva. In the summer of 2012 it was written about this officially in the newspaper :) This pool did not appear too long ago, but goldfish live in it, a lot of water and plants. Locals and workers of the Tel Aviv City Hall, which is very close to, with great interest and understanding reacted to the bird, which decided that this is a comfortable place to hunt. Let goldfish are small, but there are no competition. KwAQ does not prevent non-street noise, not many people passing by. As soon as the birds see that the noise does not interfere with their hunting and everyday life, he stops him to notice him on the drum. I saw large nesting colonies practically right on the railway and on a high-speed long-distance trace.
The creators of the ecological basin consider a good sign that Kwakva flies hunting in this pond. And they promise that if the fish in the pond is not enough, they will add. Birds are an additional amusement board and demonstrate the ecology of the pond, which attracts wild KVAKV. Fish in the pond lives quite well and it quickly multiplies. In addition to Kvakva, this pond flies still by the White Kingfisher, as I understood from the information on the network.

QuAQUA ordinary, or night heron (lat. Nycticorax Nycticorax) - Bird from the Kvakv family (Ardeidae) Aist-shaped detachment (Ciconiiformes). It meets in Europe, North Africa, Asia and the American continent.

Despite its pretty extensive territories occupied by it, it is extremely difficult to notice her in the wild. Bird leads a secretive lifestyle. It is hiding all day among the thick branches of high trees, and it takes off the hunt only with the onset of the night. Particularly cautious quacs build nests at an altitude of more than 40 m above the ground.

Similar caution is helpful. Distinguishing extraordinary voraciousness, these cute feathers cause significant damage to fish farms, for which they are subject to constant shooting. Fortunately, in most European countries, this type is taken under the protection of the state.

Behavior

Kvakva ordinary chooses most often wet wetlands. The overgrown shores of rivers and ponds, small rivers and small streams are attracted to it, near which high trees needed for reliable shelter grow nearby.

Living in the northern regions of birds make annual migrations to the south, and inhabiting in warmer climatic zones lead a settling lifestyle.

Kwaks love to gather in free flocks and often nest with big noisy colonies, sit down with herons. During the day, they warmly dorms in the thick branches, waking up only with the arrival of twilight. Usually, silent birds fly to the feeding with loud characteristic cries, for which they got their name.

Bird hunting in shallow water, chinno and leisurely by taking around the coast and looking out for prey in water. Her eyes are perfectly seen in the dark, helping to find small fish, frogs, water insects and their larvae. She deftly catches fish, swimming along the water, and another living nature can get, virtuoso climbing the stems of the cane.

Periodically, the night heron leaves the quiet creek and goes to the meadow, where she climbs with spiders, small rodents and picules. Often she, violating all the rules of hospitality and good-neighborly relations, testest small chicks from nests of other delicate birds. In the case of nonsense, it can overcome considerable distances in search of feed.

Reproduction

The nesting season begins at the beginning of spring. Taking a comfortable place in the crown of the tree, the male without tired defends him from the annoying competitors. To give yourself a more terrible view, he constantly pulls the neck, the hooks of feathers and, tilting his head, publishes loud pigching cries.

By choosing a decent cavalier, the female begins to sort out the feathers.

Newlyweds are gentle by his friend's beaks. After performing all the necessary marriage ceremonies, the male with obvious pride proceeds to the construction of the nest. He builds the basis, and then begins to bring small twigs necessary for finishing works.

The nest with rare exception is located near the water in the crown of the tree or in a dense shrub. On one large tree, several dozen marital couples can be nearing.

In the first half of June, the female laying from 3 to 5 bluish-green eggs with a periodicity of 48 hours. The masonry is sitting alternately both spouses. The first chick appears after 3 weeks, and the rest of his counterparts come to this world every 2 days. With a shortage of feed, only the firstborn survives.

Tutted blind chicks covered with dark brown fluff into cream clock.

Possessing nature enviable appetite, they are rapidly screaming, constantly demanding the next serving of food, consisting mainly of small fish. At the age of 3 weeks, the chicks are moved from the nest to neighboring branches, using parents' offerings to one and a half-month age. After that, they get up on the wing and become completely independent.

In the first year of the bird's life, the birds are brown with creamy specks that disappear for the next year. On the third year of life, they become warm and acquire an adult color.

Description

The length of the body of ordinary KVAKV reaches 60-65 cm. They weigh 500-700 g when the wings are 105-110 cm.

Spin and cooler black. Wings and tail Blue-gray. Abdominal side, forehead, overnight head and white boc. The head is rather large, planted on a short muscular neck.

Large eye iris bright red. Massive pointed beak is painted black. Wide wings have a rounded form. The males on the back of the head are growing two long snow-white decorative feather. Three fingers are turned forward, and two backwards. Fingers end with tenacious dark claws.

The life expectancy of quax ordinary in natural conditions does not exceed 16 years.
