The front door is the face of the house, so its appearance can tell a lot about the owner of the home. But it happens that the apartment has a good, solid metal or wooden door, which has completely lost its visual appeal. You can't leave it like that, and it's a pity to replace it. In this case, the restoration of the entrance door is carried out using ready-made sets of soft upholstery or cladding with other materials. The interior, facing the apartment, can be finished in accordance with the design of the room, but certain requirements are imposed on the exterior: it must be not only beautiful, but also anti-vandal.

Peculiarities

There are three main features that must be taken into account when repairing an entrance door in an apartment or street door in a house, based on which materials for restoration should be selected:

  • the door must withstand physical impact. Withstand not only the impact of heavy objects, but also resist the attempt to open its upholstery in order to get to the mortise lock. The presence of rust spots even at the bottom of the canvas is a good reason to start its reconstruction;
  • perform decorative functions, creating coziness and without spoiling the general appearance of the entrance;
  • preservation of heat in the apartment, no drafts. The main percentage (about 80%) of heat loss in the room occurs due to improperly insulated doors.

When the restoration of the entrance doors is carried out, it is advisable to restore not only the door leaf, but also to check the locks, fittings (hinges, handles, door closers, latches, etc.), platbands, and the sealant.

If you want to strengthen the door with a metal sheet, followed by processing it with paint or veneer, then it is worth considering the increase in the weight of the door leaf. Ignorance of this feature of the reconstruction often becomes the reason that the door warps within a month after the repair, the hinges are deformed and sagging, the canvas stops closing.

The solution to the problem is to buy and hang new loops with a reinforced shaft It is better not to use external overhead hinges. With a strong increase in the weight of the canvas, it is better to reinforce the box with spacers. If the door did not close well before restoration, but there are no traces of deformation of the hinges and the box, then the seal must be replaced.

Materials (edit)

Due to the wide range of materials on the construction market, at a glance at the door it is impossible to determine what it is made of. Under a thin and graceful tree, a sheet of steel 0.5 mm thick can be hidden, or an old wooden door can be found under an impressive metal frame. The main materials that are most often used are laminate, MDF panels, self-adhesive films and veneer strips.

Laminate not only changes the appearance of an iron or wooden structure, but also significantly improves its sound insulation and insulates. If you put insulation under it, as well as on the floor, then from the inside the door can not be upholstered. Reconstruction of the leaf with a laminate is suitable for both iron and wooden doors. However, with all its advantages (speed of work, simplicity, low cost), this method has its drawbacks. Even a moisture-resistant laminate will not retain its appearance for long if the door is outside and is exposed to rainfall. Laminate flooring can be easily damaged, scratched and punctured, especially if there is no combination lock at the entrance and teenagers often come there.

MDF panel it is distinguished by its durability, environmental friendliness (the gluing substance of the slab is a natural lingin), the ability to create any relief on the slab. The solid slab meets the main task of the front door - it increases its resistance to burglary. In addition, MDF easily tolerates fluctuations in temperature and humidity, which allows it to be used for outdoor decoration. The only drawback is the inability to make a solid panel at home.

Veneer- these are thin strips of wood that are glued to the base (cheaper coniferous wood or metal). A feature of veneer is the ability to choose a noble material for imitation, for example, walnut, Karelian birch, mahogany, hornbeam, cherry and others. The disadvantage of this material is the high cost, difficult gluing work, susceptibility to deterioration due to high humidity.

Self-adhesive film- a quick and cheap way to renovate metal doors. It is convenient to stick on a flat door without texture or thread. A high-quality film can last for several years from the outside.

Can I update with my own hands?

In order to make the reconstruction of doors, you do not have to contact professionals, you can do it yourself. Each method can be implemented at home with a minimum amount of tools and desire, beautifully restore the coating of Chinese doors.

What you should definitely remember:

  • preliminary preparation is always done. The old coating is removed, varnish, paint, traces of rust and corrosion are removed. Before packing the door into a new "wrapper", you need to treat the wood with antibacterial and antifungal compounds, and prime the metal with an anti-corrosion film;
  • if it is planned to cover the door with laminated film or veneer, then the surface is pre-leveled with putty. These materials are very capricious to irregularities - all bulges and depressions are very clearly visible;

  • it is worth remembering that the film is glued from the edge, followed by rolling the roll. Air bubbles are expelled from the center of the bonded area to the edges. They begin to glue the veneer from the end so that there are no noticeable joints, and on the canvas itself, the first strip is attached in the center and the rest are aligned along it;
  • if a metal door requires replacement of the front panel, then in parallel with it it is better to insulate the structure with foam, which is placed inside between the stiffeners.

The ways

The easiest and most durable way is to cover with MDF panels from the inside and outside. Front door trim panels are sold in standard sizes and in a wide variety of embossing patterns. For its self-adhesive, you only need liquid nails and a jigsaw to cut holes for fittings. The door must be removed from the hinges, prepare the surface for the adhesive composition (degrease), glue the panel, press down with a load and leave to dry completely.

The laminate finishing method is a little more complicated, but it is suitable for non-standard size doors. To upgrade, you will need laminate flooring, liquid nails, slats, a hacksaw for sawing material, weight and standard little things: a glue brush, a screwdriver for fittings, possibly a hammer or mallet.

Algorithm of work:

  • We remove the door from the hinges, remove the fittings, place the canvas in a convenient place with a good emphasis so that you can press the laminate to the surface;
  • slats to match the laminate (pre-painted or purchased ready-made) are sawn exactly along the length and width of the door frame. Reiki is needed in order to create a frame inside which the laminate will be laid;
  • slats are attached to liquid nails along the perimeter of the door;
  • the shield is assembled from the laminate in advance. Laying the laminate directly in the frame is not possible due to its design feature. Boards should be tightly fitted to each other, sawn off to fit the door, so as not to crumble at the time of laying in the frame;

  • holes for door locks and other fittings are cut out before the shield is attached to the door;
  • on liquid nails we attach the shield to the door leaf. In this case, the canvas itself is lubricated with the adhesive, and not the laminate;
  • we press the shield against the door with a load for several hours. It is best to distribute the load evenly;
  • we cut the fittings and hang the door in place.

Finishing the door with dermantine is an option for the inner side of the canvas and then only if there are no pets in the house. A huge plus is the aesthetic and practical component - noise and heat insulation. If a finish on the outside is required, it is better to choose vinyl or amyl leather, they are more resistant to temperature extremes. Faux leather will work too, but it is more porous and less resistant to dirt.

As an internal filler, you can choose foam rubber, batting and isolon. Foam rubber will give a beautiful texture, but its insulating characteristics are average. Batting insulates well from noise and cold, but is very toxic in case of fire and sags over time. Izolon is the best option between aesthetic appearance and technical characteristics.

Do you have a rusty door leaf and a constantly sticking lock every time your mood spoils when you return home? cheap Chinese design, and you are already ready for anything, just to get rid of the daily assault on your own home.

But don't rush. Most of the problems with the door leaf, frame and fittings are fixed on their own. In addition to the restored door and the saved money, you will receive joy and satisfaction from your own achievements when looking at the saved structure.

Problems that may arise

To begin with, we carry out diagnostic procedures - we determine the causes and localization of the breakdown. Only then do we start.

Broken lock. Constipation problems cannot be confused with damage to other parts of the metal structure:

  1. The key does not fit well or can be turned.
  2. When closing the door, it is necessary to press the door leaf so that the bolt goes into the functional opening of the box.
  3. When not fixed in the closed position by snapping in the tongue.

There are several reasons for the appearance of breakdown symptoms. Often it is wear and tear. The interior can be damaged due to regular ingress of moisture into the hole.

Skewed door. Signs of violation of the geometry of the structure:

  1. The door leaf touches the box when driving.
  2. It takes some effort to open (close) it.
  3. Cracks and gaps appeared between the sash and the box.
Sagging or skewing of the door occurs due to long-term operation, which has violated the strength and balance of the connecting fastening of the door block - a hinge. Less commonly, the reason is a factory defect, which manifests itself immediately after the installation of the door. If we talk about interroom, then a malfunction can be caused by a wooden canvas that has deformed over time: from moisture, dryness, temperature changes.
  • The appearance of rust. The destruction of the metal surface is manifested by unaesthetic dirty yellow or brown spots. The appearance of rust is caused by improper operation: inadequacy of the outer coating to the installation site, the use of low-quality finishing materials, etc.
  • Abrasions and damage to the cladding. The first impression of your home is created on the door for guests. At the very least, it should be neat and clean. A shabby, scratched door decorated with dents and deformations evokes not the most pleasant feelings for both visitors and owners.

How to fix each problem

If the lock breaks down, its repair is carried out only with minor damage to the mechanism:

  1. Fitting the ledgers and the corresponding holes on the door frame, adjusting the outer cover and the body (for ledgers).
  2. In other cases, the parts of the locking mechanism may fail. Changing the lock in the apartment is not difficult when it comes to cylinder mechanisms: they are easily dismantled, and repairs in most cases boil down to replacing the larva. The restored lock is then fixed in place.
  3. To remove the cylinder-type lock cylinder, it is necessary to start dismantling the mechanism from the end of the door.

You will have to tinker with the leveler-like constipation longer:

  1. For replacement, it is advisable to pick up a lock with similarly located fasteners. Otherwise, you cannot avoid drilling new mounting holes.
  2. This also applies to the location of the crossbars: they must match, or the formation of new holes in the metal will be required.

Locks of more complex designs (crab, digital) cannot be repaired independently, without knowledge and experience. Even a repair team who has arrived on call in many cases offers not repair, but replacement of the door block.

If the door is skewed, the deformation is often corrected by adjusting the hinges. Their replacement will be required:

  • If the weight of the door leaf is too heavy and the number of fasteners installed is insufficient. But the removal and complete replacement of the hinges is a temporary measure for this type of breakdown. In a few years, it will sag again under the weight.
  • Hinges weakened by long-term operation are easy to change if they are fixed with a hinged fastening system. In this case, it is important to select new parts with fixing elements, the holes in which correspond to the failed hinges.

Sometimes it is possible to fix, strengthen the hinges without reinstalling. To do this, a washer is selected that coincides in diameter with the pin on which the door is hung. The washer fits only in one place - on the pin of the upper connecting fixture. All parts are pre-treated with machine oil or grease.

  • It is impossible to repair metal doors , when the violation of the geometric parameters of the structure arose due to the shrinkage of the house. Installation will help, since the frame of the door block itself is deformed - the box. it is possible only in private houses: in some cases, the problem is solved with a wedge driven under the door block.
  • The visually noticeable appearance of rust indicates a violation of the integrity of the protective outer. Applying varnish or paint will not solve the problem: corrosion will spread underneath.

The restoration of metal doors consists of a set of measures:

  1. At the preparatory stage, fittings, an insulating elastic seal are dismantled, and the inner coating is protected with a film. When making repairs on a hinged door, do not forget to protect the walls and floor with cardboard.
  2. Paint residues and rust stains are removed with a wire brush or a drill with an abrasive attachment. Then the surface is leveled and polished with sandpaper: we start with a coarse-grained one, and finish with a fine sandpaper.
  3. Putty is applied to the cleaned and polished place (car is suitable). After it dries, the surface is polished again.
  4. We prime the surface. It is more convenient to do this with aerosol agents.
  5. The paint of the desired shade is applied to the dried primer. To make it lie flat, the door is placed in a horizontal position. The paint is applied several times: each subsequent one - after drying and polishing the previous one.
  6. The final stage is the installation of fittings and a seal.

Shabby finish is not a reason to change the door structure. It is easy to repair metal doors on site , by transforming or completely changing the appearance of the canvas:

  • Cards made of MDF, plywood or wood. The advantage of finishing is that the card is cut to the size of your door and, when finished, is fixed on the metal part of the canvas with self-tapping screws. The lock and handles are preliminarily removed; upon completion of the work, the screws are masked with plugs.
  • The most resistant to adverse weather conditions are those impregnated with preservative (including fire-fighting) solutions and laminated plywood cards.
  • Laminate is also used as decoration. But the aesthetic qualities of the material prevail over the operational ones: the coating will not last a long time, especially if the door is facing the street.
  • A simple "grandmother's" way of finishing the canvas is with leatherette. It is an inexpensive and quick iron door repair. Modern materials and installation methods will give the door leaf a presentable look.

A significant drawback of the material - the integrity is violated even with a slight "contact" with sharp and hard objects.

Prevention

Regular service maintenance (cleaning, lubrication) of moving, operated elements of the door block will prevent (or significantly push back) most breakdowns, and, consequently, the repair of iron doors .

It is important to carry out preventive treatment regularly, selecting funds for each working mechanism individually.

Metal doors should not only reliably protect the house from the penetration of thieves, cold and extraneous sound, they should also have a beautiful appearance and work properly. Although metal structures are distinguished by high strength and reliability, nothing is eternal, and after a certain time of operation, some of their elements may fail. Such doors are heavy, so the load on the hinges is high, which can cause them to break. In addition, the lock, handle, or other breakdown may occur. Most of these malfunctions can be eliminated by hand, and how to do it correctly, we will consider further.

What malfunctions of entrance metal doors can be eliminated on their own and how to do it

Such a concept as the repair of a metal door is collective and includes not only the repair of hinges, locks or handles, but also the restoration of the surface of the door leaf, platbands. If the doors were installed 10-15 years ago, then during their operation, some elements may wear out and stop performing their work correctly, so they need to be repaired or replaced. Fashion is constantly moving forward and even if the door is tightly in good condition, it may no longer fit into the modern interior. In order not to completely change the doors, you can make decorative repairs and radically change the appearance of the old metal sheet.

Although the structure of metal doors is much more complicated than wooden ones, their reliability will be much higher. Most of the breakdowns that can occur can be eliminated with your own hands, for this you need to have the necessary tools, determine the cause of the breakdown and eliminate it.

Even high-quality metal doors after a certain time may require their repair.

The main reasons for metal door breakage:

  • long service life, so some parts have a lot of wear, which prevents them from working normally;
  • at the time of purchase, a cheap option was chosen, therefore, the service life of such doors will be small;
  • the installation of doors was incorrectly performed, due to which their normal operation is impossible;
  • the door was tried or opened without a key, this may be in the case of the owners losing the keys or when unauthorized people entered the house;
  • the appearance of the door does not match the interior, and the owner decided to transform it.

In a metal door, the following elements can fail:

  • lock;
  • fittings;
  • door frame, it can change its geometry or be poorly fixed;
  • platbands;
  • door leaf, it may lose its original appearance or have a violation of the integrity of the surface.

Required tool

To repair a metal door with your own hands, you will need the following tools:

  • a set of screwdrivers or a screwdriver for unscrewing and tightening the fasteners;
  • a set of hex and ring wrenches;
  • electric drill, for drilling out the fasteners of the lock or creating new holes for its installation;
  • hammer;
  • marker, it is necessary to mark places for new holes;
  • sandpaper and a metal brush, if the restoration of the paintwork will be carried out.

Every home craftsman has tools for repairing metal doors.

Replacing the lock and cylinder in the entrance metal door

Depending on the model of the metal door, locks of different designs can be used. Before proceeding with the repair, you need to decide on the lock system. Now the following lock mechanisms are used in metal entrance doors:

  • cylinder, here you can simply and quickly replace the larva, such locks have a flat key on which there are notches or notches, this is the most common type;
  • lever mechanisms have a more complex design, but they also have the highest reliability, here the key is in the form of a rod with notches and notches;
  • disc, cruciform or rack-and-pinion mechanisms can be used much less often.

The main types of locks that can be used on metal entrance doors

The need to replace the lock or cylinder may arise in the following cases:

  • loss of a key, even if you have spare keys, in such cases it is recommended to replace the lock or cylinder, since there is a possibility that the lost key will be found by a not very honest person, and he will be able to freely enter your house;
  • breakdown of the mechanism, improper operation can cause breakdown of the mechanism or this is due to the use of low-quality locks;
  • replacement of the lock with a more modern and reliable model;
  • after a break-in, this can happen when thieves entered the apartment or you lost the keys and opened the doors yourself;
  • buying an apartment, for security reasons, when buying an apartment, it is best to immediately change the locks or larvae.

Cylinder lock

Most budget entrance doors use this type of lock. The design of such a device allows, in the event of a key loss, to change not the entire mechanism, but only the lock cylinder. Since the larvae are standard sizes, finding the one that fits your castle shouldn't be too difficult.

The sequence of replacing the cylinder lock:

  1. First, the armor plate is removed.

    To remove the cover, use a screwdriver or screwdriver

  2. The key opens the lock.
  3. From the end of the door, using a screwdriver, unscrew the plate.

    There are screws on the side that secure the plate and fix the lock core

  4. To release the crossbars, the lock is closed.
  5. In the center at the end there is a screw that fixes the larva, it must be unscrewed and slightly turned to pull out the larva.

    Turning slightly, you can easily reach the lock cylinder

  6. A new "secret" is inserted and all operations are performed in reverse order.

Suvald castle

Such a device has a higher reliability, but its design is also more complicated. Depending on the manufacturer, if the lever lock fails, in cheaper models you will have to change the lock completely. In expensive versions, it is possible to recode the levers, for this a new core is purchased complete with keys and inserted into the lock. Spare parts must be purchased from the same manufacturer as the doors.

The procedure for replacing the lever lock:

If you have doubts that you can independently cope with the replacement of the lock or larva, then it is better to invite specialists to perform the work.

When the metal door crouches, it is impossible not to notice such a malfunction. It begins to hook on the threshold, it does not close well and its thermal insulation characteristics are violated.

A feature of metal doors is that they are heavy, so even high-quality hinges can change their original position over time. During the operation of the doors, a gradual subsidence of the canvas occurs and the moment comes when such a malfunction must be eliminated.

Usually, in metal doors, hinges are not welded, but screwed on. If so, they can be replaced simply and quickly. The main thing is to purchase the same hinges so that the mounting holes on them coincide with the holes on the door frame and door leaf.

If the hinges are welded, then they can be cut off and new ones can be adopted in this place, but there is no guarantee that in this case the need for repair may arise again after a while. If possible, the doors can be raised using washers that are put on the rod of the lower canopy, but before that they are lubricated with grease or a similar lubricant.

The door can be lifted with washers installed in the hinges.

If the house shrinks, then the door warps due to deformation of the door leaf, so the way out is to replace the entire door block. If possible, you can try to drive wooden wedges under the base of the door frame and use them to align it.

Before proceeding with the elimination of the door sagging, you must first determine the reasons that caused this and eliminate them.

The entrance metal door does not close properly

Often a situation arises when the front door begins to close poorly, this happens very tightly or vice versa weakly. A new door may close tightly. This is due to the fact that the seal is still tight and to get rid of such a deficiency, it is enough to wait 1-2 weeks until it becomes more elastic.

The door may not close properly due to the fact that the lock does not work properly. It is necessary to see if the deadbolt fits into the groove correctly. If there is an offset, then the door must be correctly positioned, for which the hinges are adjusted.

To adjust the closeness of the lock, most metal doors have a false plate, with which you can adjust the density of the door leaf. In cheap models, the jamming of the bolt can be eliminated by sawing the place in the door frame into which it enters, or you can slightly bend the metal with pliers.

The tightness of the door closing is regulated by a false bar

In the event that the door closes very easily, you need to pay attention to the condition of the seals. If they are worn out, they cannot provide the required tightness, and the leaf does not fit tightly to the door frame. It is enough to replace the seal and this problem will disappear.

Repair and replacement of the handle of a metal door

One of the most vulnerable elements of a door is the handle. Metal doors are usually equipped with lever handles, but they can also be stationary.

Lever handles are most often found, with their help, the door lock tongue is controlled, and the canvas also moves, while the stationary handle serves only to open / close the door.

Using the lever handle, the door is opened / closed and the lock tongue is operated

The stationary handle rarely breaks, this usually occurs from strong mechanical stress. If it breaks down, the handle is replaced, and when the fastening is loosened, the fasteners are tightened.

The lever handle has a more complex design, therefore it breaks much more often. There may be the following breakdowns:

  1. Breakdown of the moving mechanism. The fastening bar and the movable handle are connected to each other by a special movable mechanism. The handle falling out of the seat can occur due to strong mechanical stress, if it is made of poor steel or bad riveting. In such situations, the handle cannot be repaired and must be replaced with a new one.
  2. Rod problems. The rod that transfers the force from the movable handle to the lock tongue has a square cross section. If, when you turn the handle, it works fine and the tongue does not move, then there is a problem with the shaft. It can break during operation or, due to the loosening of the handle, jump out of its place. In rare cases, the seat in the handle is worn out and the rod in it begins to rotate. It is enough to replace the rod or insert it into place and this problem disappears.
  3. The handle does not return to its original position. To return the handle, a spiral spring is used, which is attached to the bar on one side and to the handle on the other. The spring can pop out of the mountings or break. To eliminate such a malfunction, it is enough to insert the spring into place or replace it with a new one.
  4. The handle falls out. This is due to the breakage of the retaining ring. It can either unclench or burst; replacement is performed after disassembling the handle.

In order to remove the lever handle on a metal door, you must perform the following operations:

If there is a decorative overlay, the disassembly procedure will be slightly different:

When it is only necessary to replace the failed elements, then they are changed, and if this is not possible, then they acquire the same handle and install it instead of the broken one.

How to lubricate a metal door

Door lubrication is a simple task that any DIYer can do on their own. The creak of the door leaf is not only annoying, but also indicates that the door is not working properly and this negatively affects its performance and service life.

First, you need to determine and eliminate the reason for the creak, and only then proceed to the lubrication process. The reasons why a creak appears:

  • lack of lubrication, over time, lubricant flows out of the hinges and they begin to creak during operation;
  • corrosion, this is the most common reason, since the doors are entrance, the hinges constantly succumb to the negative effects of moisture, which can cause rust and metal destruction;
  • wear of the hinges, when the hinges are not lubricated in time, their wear occurs and if it is large, then you will have to replace the failed elements;
  • debris, dust or debris can enter and clog the hinges;
  • the skew of the canvas, while both the hinges and the canvas, which rubs against the box, can creak.

Various materials can be used to lubricate metal doors, but most often these are:

  • WD 40, such a lubricant helps to remove corrosion and creates a thin film on the surface, which prevents the development of corrosion and improves sliding;
  • lithol - frost and moisture resistant material;
  • grease;
  • Cyatim is a universal agent, which is a thickened oil with the addition of antioxidant additives.

It is better to use thick products to lubricate the metal door.

If the described tools are not at hand, you can use waste oil, sewing machine oil, or graphite shavings, which are obtained from the shaft of a simple pencil.

It is preferable to lubricate parts with thick agents, as they will provide good sliding over a longer period of time.

When lubricating the door, you must adhere to the following rules:

In order for a metal door to work for a long time and silently, it is necessary to periodically lubricate it.

Restoration of metal entrance doors

Over time, the appearance of a metal entrance door becomes less attractive, it loses its original appearance, and rust may appear. Even if the door is in good condition, after a while, it may become outdated, and will not correspond to the interior or exterior design of the house, therefore, it becomes necessary to change its appearance.

The most popular ways to restore a metal front door are:

  1. Painting. For these purposes, acrylic, automotive, hammer paint can be used, with which you can simply and quickly restore a metal sheet.

    Painting is the most affordable way to restore

  2. Artificial leather upholstery. This method is suitable for decorating the door from the side of the room. This solution allows you to additionally insulate the door leaf, but if there is a cat or dog in the house, then it will not serve you for long.

    Faux leather upholstery allows for additional insulation of the door

  3. Laminate sheathing. You can create a solution that fits into any interior. It can be used both inside and outside the door. The disadvantage of this restoration method is the high cost of the material.

    Laminate metal doors can be sheathed both inside and outside

  4. Powder spraying. The surface turns out to be durable and beautiful, but at home it will not work to apply powder paint, this can be done only in special workshops, but it will still be cheaper than buying a new door.

    Powder paint can only be applied in a specialized workshop

  5. MDF panels. MDF plates allow you to create a beautiful and high-quality coating, they are easy to care for and such a metal door will serve for many years.

    With the help of MDF overlays, you can simply and quickly restore a metal door

  6. Natural wood. This method allows you to transform an ordinary metal door and make a real work of art out of it. Such a canvas is decorated with carvings and does not externally differ from what is made of natural wood.

    A metal door sheathed with wood looks like a product made of natural wood

The choice of a method for restoring a metal door depends on the desire and ability of the owner; most of the options can be realized with your own hands.

How to dismantle an entrance metal door

In order to independently dismantle the metal entrance door, you first need to prepare all the necessary tools:

  • hammer;
  • crowbar;
  • spanners;
  • Bulgarian.

Sequentially dismantling the metal door:

It remains to clear the doorway of debris and you can proceed to the installation of a new door.

If there is a need to repair entrance metal doors, you need to adequately assess your capabilities and decide whether you can cope with such work without the help of specialists. If there is no such confidence, then instead of fixing one breakdown, you can create several more problems. Much depends on the quality of the door, if this is an expensive model, then you should not risk it and it is better to invite a master to repair it. You can handle the repair of a budget metal door on your own, you just need to first determine the breakdown, the cause of its occurrence, and only then start fixing the problem. It is necessary to act in accordance with the developed technologies and adhere to the recommendations of specialists.

Increasingly, owners of houses and apartments are installing metal doors, wishing to protect themselves as much as possible. But when choosing products of this type, it should be borne in mind that when defects appear, it is quite difficult to make repairs. This is due to the complexity of their design. But if you have knowledge about such a process, you can do the work yourself.

Common causes of door breakage

The most common causes of metal door breakdowns include:

  1. Long term of use. Regardless of the quality of the construction, some elements fail over time, even if the owner of the house or apartment follows the rules for caring for a metal door.
  2. Poor door quality. When purchasing a design, many choose cheaper models, wanting to save money. But they do not take into account that cheap products can deform with use after a few years.
  3. Violation of installation technology. If the installation of a metal door is carried out by yourself, it is possible to make mistakes that can lead to breakage during use.
  4. Attempts to penetrate without a key This can happen when the key is lost or when trying to break it.
  5. Broken door lock. It is this part of the structure that breaks down more often than others. This is due to the complexity of the mechanism and the frequency of its use.

Also, the repair of metal doors can be carried out in the case when the owner of the house wants to update the facade and transform the structure.

Important! In the absence of specialized tools for carrying out the work, you should contact the professionals, and not try to solve the problem yourself, using only the available tools.

It should also be remembered that repairing some parts of a metal door can be more expensive than purchasing a new model. That is why, before carrying out work, it is important to assess their cost.

Door lock repair

One of the most common problems when using a metal door is a broken lock. Most often, this problem can be eliminated only by replacing the entire locking structure. It should be remembered that during such work, it may be necessary to completely replace the cladding.

The nature of actions in case of a lock breakage depends on the type of construction:

  1. If a cylindrical mechanism is used, it is worth trying to replace the larva, since it is this part of the structure that breaks most often. It should be noted that it is easy to replace it even in the absence of experience in carrying out such work. To dismantle the larva, it is enough to unscrew the fixing screw.
  2. In the event of a breakdown of a safe-type lock or a system with crossbars, in the absence of experience, it is not worthwhile to make repairs on your own. Such products require proper dismantling and disassembly. Making a mistake can seriously damage the structure.

If the elements of the lock cannot be repaired or replaced, you should find a product that meets all the parameters of the old lock.

If the lever mechanism breaks down, the replacement is done as follows:

  1. First you need to position the metal door in the open position.
  2. After that, you need to remove the bolt, handle and armor plate. At this stage, you should find the screws and remove them.
  3. Then the mechanism is removed and a new lock can be installed in its place. During installation, it is necessary to check the correct location of all elements.

Such a defect cannot be ignored, since the door begins to cling to the threshold, and the thermal insulation qualities of the structure are significantly reduced. Also, the skew of the door often causes a draft.

The skewing occurs due to the heavy weight of the metal door, since the eyelets cannot withstand the load. To remedy the situation, it is necessary to replace the old elements. But usually it only helps for a few years, after which the problem appears again.

Loosening of the hinges is due to wear. They are easy enough to change if no welding has been used to secure them. When replacing hinges, it is important to ensure that the fasteners are located in the same places where the old ones were. Also, during such work, the hinges should be lubricated.

A metal door can be skewed as a result of shrinkage at home. In this case, the problem arises due to the skewing of the door frame, therefore, to eliminate it, you have to completely replace the structure. In some cases, the location under the bottom panel of the wedge will help.

The appearance of rust

Another reason for repairing a metal door is the appearance of a large layer of rust. Despite the fact that metal doors are treated with special anti-corrosion compounds before use, rust begins to appear on the surface over time. The lower part of the structure is usually affected more quickly.

To fix the problem and prevent its occurrence, it is necessary to carry out some work:

  1. The first step is to prepare sandpaper, a metal brush and solvent. You will also need a spatula, paint and putty mixture.
  2. After that, it is necessary to remove all door fittings and fix the film on the inner surface of the door. This is to protect against paint and dirt.
  3. Then you need to remove all the old coatings with a brush. After cleaning, sand the door leaf. During this process, first use coarse sandpaper, then fine sandpaper.
  4. The next step is to degrease the surface with a solvent. After applying a layer of this substance, you need to wait until it is completely dry.
  5. Then paint is applied. Before that, it is necessary to remove the metal door from its hinges and place it on a horizontal surface. The coloring composition is applied in 2 layers.
  6. At the final stage, you need to reinstall all the fittings and, if necessary, replace the seal.

If all work is carried out in a vertical position, the walls should be protected in advance by covering them with foil. The floor near the metal door should also be covered with foil or newspapers.

Plating repair

Restoration of the skin of a metal door can be done quite simply. To do this, you can use materials such as leatherette, laminate, vinyl and MDF panels.

The method of fixing these materials differs depending on their characteristics. Dermantin is often chosen for cladding a metal door. This is due to the ease with which the material is secured.

When choosing a cladding, you should take into account the features of various types of materials:

  1. The iron sheet can be coated with paint. This will reduce the time spent on repairing the structure.
  2. Artificial leather allows you to beautifully design a metal structure, but with frequent use it quickly wears out. It should be noted that this material has a high cost.
  3. Powder spraying, the thickness of which can reach 0.2 mm, allows to protect the metal from external influences. It should be noted that you cannot apply such a coating on your own.
  4. MDF panels can be used for a longer time than leather. In this case, during the selection, you can choose one of the many options.
  5. Facing a metal door with wood allows not only to protect the metal from corrosion, but also to make the door more beautiful. It should be noted that the cost of such cladding is quite high.

When facing a metal door, it is important to remember that the fixing of the material must be done carefully, since even small errors can spoil the impression.

Breakage of fittings

During operation, structural elements such as hinges, peephole, chains and handles often break. If a door handle breaks down, you first need to determine the cause. One of the most common problems is that the tongue does not fully extend or stops moving altogether.

In most cases, it is easier to replace the entire structure. Often handles are installed in metal doors, which can be replaced without buying a new lock. If the eye breaks, you will have to completely disassemble the structure.

If the door needs to be repaired due to a burglary attempt, you should contact a professional, since only an experienced specialist is able to identify the weakest points of the structure and fix the problem.

It should be remembered that in the absence of experience and knowledge of how to repair a metal door, you should contact a specialist. This is due to the fact that such constructions are quite complex and, if improperly performed, can exacerbate the problem.

Pasting the door with veneer

If the repair of a metal door involves replacing the coating of the structure, it is worth taking a closer look at various materials. One of the most common is veneer. Before starting work, it is necessary to level the surface with a putty.

After the specified composition has dried, the surface should be sanded with fine-grained emery paper. After that, the surface must be degreased. First, the central part of the canvas is pasted over with veneer. The first veneer sheet is glued in the middle and acts as a guide for securing the rest.

To glue the specified material, you need to remove the protective film from the back side and carefully place the sheet on the surface of the door leaf. For better adhesion, you can iron the material through the parchment paper with an iron. Many owners of houses and apartments choose the specified material, since it is quickly and easily fixed on the door, even in the absence of experience in carrying out such work.

Facing with MDF panels

One of the most common materials used for door cladding in industrial production is MDF panels. By fixing such products on the door, you can completely change the appearance of the door. In this case, the design will not differ in any way from factory products.

Paneling is done in several stages:

  1. First, all the fittings are dismantled and the canvas is removed from the hinges. It must be placed on a horizontal surface. To improve the adhesion of the facing material to the metal, it is necessary to sand the surface with sandpaper, and then degrease.
  2. At the next stage, holes are cut out in the places where the lock, peephole and handles are located.
  3. After that, the panels are fixed using liquid nails.
  4. In the same way, the framing corner is fixed along the perimeter of the canvas.
  5. At the last stage, the installation of locks and fittings is carried out.

All MDF panels are available in standard sizes, so they do not need to be customized for a specific canvas. If necessary, remove the excess with a jigsaw.

With high-quality finishing of an apartment with your own hands, you will not do without repairing interior doors that have lost their former attractiveness.

Entrance doors that border the street are even more susceptible to wear and tear. Therefore, when decorating an apartment, it is necessary to repair the front door, as it is a kind of "face" of the house.

Doors can be metal, wood, laminated, duralumin, glass. Common faults for all types are:

  • Skew;
  • Loosening of the hinges;
  • Breakage of fittings;
  • The appearance of scratches;
  • Peeling paint.

How to repair front doors?

Entrance doors are often made of alloy or wood.

If the doors face the street, then almost everyone prefers the installation of iron doors.

Front door handle repair

For such doors, the main faults are often associated with the fittings. Due to the constant loads on the handle, the mechanism loosens, and after that the spring holding the handle is destroyed. As a result, the handle simply hangs and does not return to its original position. Repair of the front door handle consists in removing the handle from the front door, disassembling it next and replacing the spring.

Or just buy a fresh pen and replace the old one

If there is no spring under the hand, you can wind it yourself from a metal wire and harden it so that it is springy. The hardening process is simple, heat the spring to a cherry color and throw it into the water.

The hinges of the entrance iron doors from time to time do not withstand the enormous weight of the product, therefore, in this case, repairing the door with your own hands is quite difficult. But if the hinges are welded, then you can cut them off and replace them with fresh ones.

When the hinges are simply screwed on, it is even easier to correct the imperfections that have arisen. It is only necessary to replace worn fittings.

There are doors that can be adjusted using a hexagon. In this case, it is necessary to adjust the upper hinge. After loosening the bolts, press the door towards the hinge and tighten the fastening.

If the door frame of the iron door is warped, then this can be eliminated driving in wedges under the base of the structure.

The front iron door is rusted

Often, an iron entrance door can rust, but subsequent actions can put it in order.

  1. It is necessary to dismantle the door hardware.
  2. Clean the canvas from rust and peeling paint with an iron brush.
  3. Sand the surface and degrease the door with solvent.
  4. Putty the warped areas of the canvas.
  5. Apply a coat of primer.
  6. To paint the canvas with water-repellent paint.
  7. Replace fittings.

Advice! For an entrance door made of alloy, it is worth getting only good-quality fittings from recognizable manufacturers, which allows you not to think about repairing the door for a long time.

The entrance wood door sank

If a wooden door sagged, then the thing, most quickly, is in the wear of the hinges or the curvature of the box.

If the door is not closing well, first of all, you should check the upper hinge - it may only be necessary to tighten the screws. And a complete renovation of the front door may not be needed.

If the hinges are worn out, then you should perform the following actions:

  1. Replace old hinges with fresh self-tapping screws greased with epoxy glue.
  2. If the door has sagged slightly, you can put washers on the axis of the hinges or make a ring of wire. Lubricate the hinges with machine oil.

If cracks or scratches appear, you can return the door to its previous appearance by following these steps:

  1. Remove the door from its hinges and place it on a flat surface.
  2. Remove the old coating with solvent and sand the canvas with emery paper.
  3. Fill cracks and scratches with wood filler.
  4. Sand the dried surface.
  5. If there are huge gaps, then glue wood inserts on them.
  6. Putty and then prime the surface.
  7. Cover the canvas with varnish or paint.

Advice! For painting wood entrance doors, a special water-repellent paint must be used.

If the door frame is bent, then you can make a small repair of the door frame with your own hands.

For this you need:

  1. Remove the door.
  2. Align the box with a level.
  3. Fix the box correctly by installing the supports.
  4. Drill holes from the inside of the box with a 5 cm recess into the wall.
  5. Drive pins (steel or wood) into the holes, greased with epoxy glue.
  6. Reinstall the door.

A door is such a structure, which, in most cases, is occasionally in a static state. In often visited places, it is quite intensively exploited. Therefore, sooner or later the moment comes when even the highest quality door structures require repair.

If you need urgent and difficult repairs, it is better to contact a specialized company. And you can fix some things without the help of others without recruiting professionals from the outside.

The main disadvantages corresponding to iron doors and how to eliminate them

To begin with, you should study the more frequent situations that entail the repair of iron doors.

Misalignment of the door structure

Symptoms:

  • The door is scratching the floor
  • The tight fit of the door leaf to the box is broken
  • Decrease in sound and heat insulation
  1. The massiveness of the iron door. Languid doors made of multilayer steel have a tremendous effect on any, even the most durable, hinges.

    From time to time, the repair of the iron door in the apartment can be completed already at the stage of tightening the hinges, twisting the loosened screws. If the hinges are deformed, then the repair of iron doors with your own hands is very complicated. In such a situation, we can only advise you to dismantle the old hinges, replacing them with serviceable ones.

  2. Loop wear, which came as a result of long-term operation. If we are not talking about welded fasteners, then the solution is similar to the previous one - replacing deformed hinges.

    Choose only sturdy, high-quality products that are perfectly suitable for a particular door model.

  3. Deformation of the door frame... The elimination of such difficulty is possible if wedges are driven under the base of the door structure.

It so happens that there are no obvious deformations of the door, and it is not possible to close the door gap tightly. Here, quickly, it's time to replace the rubber seal. This operation is not difficult.

Corrosive changes

Most often, such a defect is observed in the lower part of the doors.

Rust is difficult to get rid of. To repair the entrance iron doors, you will need to make a lot of effort and perform certain actions:

  1. Before repair work, remove seals, decorative elements and fittings, free the affected area.
  2. Use a hard brush to remove swollen paint and rusty deposits.
  3. Sand the door surface with emery or a sander.
  4. Degrease the affected area with solvent.
  5. Smooth out the deformed areas using a special auto putty.
  6. Sand the area to be corrected.

    Strive for a flawless flatness.

  7. Apply a coat of spray primer.
  8. It's time for the initial painting.
  9. If the paint is uneven, sand the unevenness.
  10. Now re-paint.
  11. Let the paint dry.
  12. Replace the handles, seal, etc.

Broken hardware

At the root of this obstacle, as a rule, lies an attempt to save money on the purchase of products of dubious properties.

Such fittings quickly fail. What can be done here? Replace the damaged part with a fresh one, now paying more attention to quality.

Damage to the decorative coating of the door leaf

Before proceeding with the restoration of the external decorative coating, an assessment of the degree of damage should be made. And, already focusing on the conclusions made, you can decide whether full or partial repairs need to be done.

Sometimes, it is easier and cheaper to simply remove the damaged coating and finish the door leaf again. What options are there?

Types of decorative finishes

Breakage of the castle

In the event of such a situation, nothing has been invented better than replacing a failed mechanism.

Cheap locks have a short lifespan, stick during use and often break. The locking systems, which are equipped with the Forpost doors, have proven themselves well, so if you have started repairs, then do not save.

If the lock is simply loosened, then this indicates broken holes into which self-tapping screws are screwed.

  1. Unscrew the screws.
  2. Place small pieces of wood (matches) into the holes.
  3. Tighten the screws again.

Door creak

Quite a common option. Method to eliminate it:

  1. Raise the door leaf slightly.
  2. Lubricate the hinges with machine oil.

    You can also eliminate this problem by placing a piece of pencil (graphite) in the loop gap.

  3. Spread the grease evenly over the mating surfaces. To do this, open and close the doors a couple of times.
  4. Return the door to its original position.

By following these tips, you can cope with certain malfunctions without the help of others. If the advice does not help, then, no matter how annoying it may sound, you will have to invite specialists.

DIY entrance door repair

Repair of steel, iron and wooden entrance doors can be performed without the help of others.

If the front door sags, the lock is jammed on it or the varnish has peeled off, then in no case should it be replaced. In fact, all door imperfections can be eliminated on their own.

Repair of apartment entrance doors without the help of others is a good opportunity to save on the services of professionals and develop the abilities of home professionals for yourself.

First you need to decide when the doors really need repairs. All doors need constant care and maintenance. If you do not lubricate the door hinges, do not cover them with special compounds and do not clean their surface, then one day the doors may begin:

  • hang out on hinges;
  • creak when opening and closing;
  • become covered with cracks;
  • close badly or sag.

However, it is important to keep in mind that door faults are not always associated with bad operation.

Breakdowns associated with incorrect door manufacturing technology are very common.

Repair of a doorway

If the door does not hold well in the gap, then the front door opening needs to be repaired. To carry it out, you need to perform the following steps:

  • remove the door leaf and platbands;
  • align and fix the box;
  • drill holes in the door pillars and drive iron pins into them;
  • return the platbands and door leaf.

When problems with door hinges appear, options for replacing, adjusting or re-hanging the hinges are possible. First, you need to check the strength of the upper loop. This can be done by pulling the screws. If the door has not yet had time to settle strongly, then iron washers, which are put on the hinge pin, will help to return it to its place.

The method is especially effective for removable door hinge options.

Eliminating door skew

Repair of the entrance iron door in the apartment from time to time may also be required, despite its reliable design. Self-repair in such options may not help out.

One of the more common problems with steel doors is skew. When an iron door is skewed, all its useful characteristics lose their meaning. A prerequisite for skewing may be:

  • large cloth kit;
  • wear of the hinges.

If the reason for the skewing of the doors lies in a very large body kit, then a special approach is needed here.

Most likely, the prerequisite will be the multi-layer door. In this case, you need to repair the entrance iron doors in the apartment. It is rather difficult to carry it out without the help of others. The only option may be to cut the loops and replace them with fresh ones. But such a method does not guarantee success.

For hinge dilemmas, first you need to know if they are bolted or welded. In the first case, there will be no difficulties in repairing - it will only be necessary to find suitable fittings.

If the hinges are welded, then professionals cannot do without the help of the door.

Another prerequisite for the obstacle may be the skewing of the entire door frame. The correct solution in this case would be to drive wedges under the base of the door structure.

You can get acquainted with the prices for installing locks in iron doors here. You can also order the service of installing a peephole in a metal door, the cost of which is given here.

Get rid of rust

To bring the iron doors to their normal working condition, you need to perform a number of complex operations.

First you need to get ready to repair the door by removing the seals and door hardware from it. Then you need to clean off the rust and sand the surface. After this, it is essential not to forget to degrease the doors with a special solvent.

The next step is to putty the warped parts of the door surface. Then all that remains is to use an aerosol primer and apply several layers of paint. After each of the steps, you need to sand the surface, which is done in order to give it the greatest evenness.

After the door is dry, you can put it back in place.

Cases when repair or replacement of iron doors is needed

In nature, to our great chagrin, there is nothing endless.

Completely all things sooner or later fall into disrepair completely or partly break. Entrance doors are no exception, therefore, when purchasing and installing them in your own apartment, you should be fully aware of the moment that sooner or later their repair will come in handy. It should be noted that such a process, as the repair of iron doors, does not look like something very scary and problematic in practice.

Front door repair is a feasible task with the smallest set of tools

The service life of any item can be greatly extended by competent and careful handling. In the same situations, when the doors are handled, to put it mildly, incorrectly, repair, and from time to time, and substitution is simply inevitable.

There are a number of reasons why an iron door can break. These include:

  • poorly performed installation work during installation
  • factory, manufacturing defects
  • Hacking attempt
  • the time factor, or, in other words, the most common wear and tear in

In a situation where intruders tried to open the door, more often than not, urgent repairs will be needed, since in such cases the doors, as a rule, have significant damage.

Minor malfunctions can be completely eliminated on your own, but when the most severe work is required, an iron door repairman will be indispensable.

The repair work includes not only the replacement of doors and the elimination of individual mechanical damage, but also the installation of anti-burglar fittings, additional locking devices, the replacement of insulation, or the installation of armor.

Repair of entrance doors

Have you decided to renovate your apartment? Change the wallpaper on the walls, the flooring and the ceiling? Wonderful! But what about the front door? After all, its cladding has already significantly worn out over time and looks, to put it mildly, untidy, although the base of the door remains quite strong and strong. Really change the whole door? But replacing a door entails a good-quality installation of the newest door frame, which in total will significantly hit your budget in our time, this pleasure is not cheap.

There is also the most economical and optimal method to cope with this problem for us.

Just call a company offering door upholstery services and place an order for a professional repair of doors, entrance or interior, wood or iron doors. There are many design methods for entrance doors upholstered with dermantine, among which the most common is the application of a pattern to the door leaf using decorative nails with large caps, leather or metal. Previously, pictures on doors were a necessity, since those used at that time required additional fastening not only along the edges of the door, but also over its entire surface. Nowadays, masters specializing in door repairs use, thanks to which you can throw your door smooth.

It is possible to repair the door after emergency opening.

This is a very common option for the need for repair work, after all, after the EMERCOM employees break the door.

not only the outer upholstery will be damaged, but also the metal base. And the blame for everything is an old jammed lock. We will not only help you to put in order the external appearance of the door, but also, if necessary, we will offer fresh high-quality locks of Russian and imported from other countries manufacturers for replacement.

Possible prerequisites for the repair of iron doors

Under the repair of a metal door, it is supposed to restore its functions, as well as the restoration or replacement of the decorative coating. The root causes of malfunctions may be:

  • initial violation of the technology for installing the structure;
  • attempted unauthorized entry;
  • breakage of door locks;
  • natural wear of parts during operation.

For entrance iron doors that are exposed to a specific environmental action, additional reasons are considered: the effect of humidity and temperature differences.

Aqua condensate, which collects in the locking mechanisms and freezes at low temperatures, can disable them. The formation of rust destroys the door hinges, causing the steel doors to skew. In addition, the weld is always a more vulnerable spot of iron structures for rust, because the welded door hinge can simply come off.

Timely identification of circumstances and proper service of entrance doors help in some cases to get by with small preventive repairs.

But some types of malfunctions that require a radical reinstallation of the door leaf can require significant foreign exchange costs. In these options, a more practical solution would be to buy and install fresh iron doors.

Skewing entrance doors

The presence of stiffening ribs inside the iron door leaf greatly helps to prevent skewing. The resulting disadvantage is immediately noticeable - the door starts to cling to the threshold, it does not close well, the heat and sound insulation is disturbed.

The reasons for the skew are often:

  • shrinkage of the foundation of the house;
  • a large mass of iron doors;
  • wear of the hinges.

In new buildings, especially in a block or monolithic structure, shrinkage often occurs. Residents who have moved in, striving to equip their own dwelling as soon as possible, begin its renovation specifically with the installation of fresh doors. Shrinkage of the foundation of the house leads to a distortion of the door and a violation of the geometry of the door frame. If in personal households such an imbalance from time to time can be eliminated by driving a wedge under the sagging part, then in a panel high-rise building a similar option is virtually excluded.

Here you will probably need to reinstall the entire door block.

The multilayer structure of entrance doors made of iron sheets can have a rather significant mass, due to the fact that even high-quality hinges will not be able to hold it. After some time, the door sags and does not close. It is difficult to cope with such a problem, since dismantling and installing fresh hinges, traditionally, requires welding.

Over time, such a breakdown may appear again, therefore, when choosing the entrance doors, the closest attention must be paid to the correspondence of the hanging cloth and the massiveness of the holding hinge.

It can radically solve the question and change the door hinges completely without the help of others, if they are not welded tightly, but screwed on. The correct selection of fittings, in which the holes on the hinge card and on the box exactly coincide, will greatly simplify such a repair.

But most often, the distortion of steel doors occurs due to the mechanical wear of the door hinges, which even their constant lubrication does not help out.

The constant work on abrasion with a significant weight of the canvas leads to an uneven sampling of the base of the hinge body, because the doors give a slight distortion. In this case, it is possible to restore the hinge by inserting a washer of the corresponding thickness onto its pin.

Broken iron door lock

The most common and widespread cause of malfunctioning iron doors is damage to the locks. In some cases, depending on the type of installed constipation, you can make such a repair without the help of others. For cylinder-type locks, for example, from time to time it is enough to replace its larva. It is removed by simply unscrewing the fastening screw at the end of the doors.

Lever locks, as a rule, cannot be repaired, therefore the question is solved by completely replacing the failed mechanism. The main obstacle here is the search for locks of similar design and dimensions.

A more severe discrepancy arises when complex safe-type locks are used as constipations.

Such a repair is not complete without the help of professionals and foresees the removal of the door trim. The cost of fixing the door can be expensive and it is often more profitable to install a fresh door.

Sometimes, when the sash is closed, when it does not come out to turn the key when locking, it turns out that the door has slightly subsided and the crossbars of the locks do not fall into the counterpart on the box. In this case, it will be necessary to replace the loops or restore them. If the lock jams when opening the doors, then it may be that it just needs to be lubricated.

Installing an armored pad

When repairing iron doors, from time to time you need their additional protection against burglary, which is the installation of an armored plate.

It consists of two hardened iron plates, tightened through the door leaf with screws. There are three main types of similar protection:

  • invoice armored pad;
  • mortise type armor plate;
  • mortise plate on the lock cylinder.

The cheapest and most readily available method is the 1st option, in which the plate is installed specifically on the front of the cylinder. Mortise armored plate is placed directly on the lock body and tightened with screws from the back of the doors. This protection is invisible and reliable.

In fact, an armored plate embedded in the iron door leaf is considered impregnable.

Repair of iron doors

Repair of iron doors: we fix common breakdowns

In every house, a breakdown of the front door can occur; repairing iron doors is not as difficult as it seems. Further we will talk about the most common types of problems with doors and methods of fixing them.

Doors emit a powerful creak

This discrepancy is manifested therefore that the details in the canopy rub against each other when moving. The problem is solved with machine oil or at least some similar lubricant.

Doors open / close themselves

The reason for this problem lies in the incorrect attachment of the loops.

It is necessary to fasten the hinges strictly in the vertical plane. If the doors open themselves, put a small piece of cardboard under the upper hinge, and if they close themselves under the lower one.

Doors are hard to close and open

In such a situation, it is necessary to establish the reason for the problem. To do this, chalk the tongue in the door lock and close the doors. When the tongue goes under the hole, there is a possibility that the case is in loose screws, due to which a small subsidence of the door came out. If this does not work, unscrew the striker from the door frame and raise the hole with a ratfil.

Now screw the bar to a different location.

The doors are twisted

The reasons for this phenomenon can be different. The first prerequisite may be a large mass of an iron door. If thick multilayer steel was used for the production of the door, at some point this can become a prerequisite for the breakdown of even the highest quality hinges.

It is extremely difficult to repair the front door on your own in this situation. There is an option to try installing fresh hinges, having previously cut off those that were previously.

The 2nd prerequisite may be that the hinges are worn out. If the hinges are bolted, there is nothing difficult. Just find some good fittings of a suitable design. A third prerequisite might be that the door frame is skewed. In this case, it is necessary to drive wedges under the door frame.

The doors are rusted

To bring rusty iron doors back to normal, you need:

  • 1. Prepare the doors for repair work, remove the seal, fasteners, etc.
  • 2. Brush off any traces of corrosion with an iron brush.
  • 3. Sand the surface.
  • 4. Degrease the door with a solvent.
  • 5.

    Putty on the rusted surface (use a car cleaner).

  • 6. Sand the surface again, smoothing it very well.
  • 7. Prime the doors using a spray primer.
  • 8. Apply the 1st coat of paint.
  • 9. Sand the paint stains (if any).
  • Apply the paint in a second layer.
  • Install fasteners and seal on dry and repaired doors.

Changing the lock in iron doors, larva

The easiest way is to change it to a design of a similar model, for this it is not necessary to disassemble the door. The most difficult operation is the replacement of a mortise lock, when configurations are required inside the mechanism, if the selection of a similar option was not crowned with success.

In this case, it may be necessary to displace the nest holes, expand them or cut new ones.

The first step is to decide on the type of installed mechanism. Then determine the maximum number of revolutions of the system, whether the shutter is located, whether it closes from the inside and how: using a latch, a key, etc.

After that, it is necessary to perform horizontal marking, and in order to do this, it is necessary to measure about 1 meter from the floor from the side of the door, where it meets the jamb. Now it is necessary to measure the lower edge of the lock body by attaching it to the strip.

Select the drill so that the spindle can rotate freely in the hole. It is necessary to lean the drill against the markings on the front side and drill through. Also on the other side. The well is executed by the same method. The next step in replacing the lock consists in drilling holes for the body, only now the drill needs to be selected of equal thickness.

To drill a hole of exactly the depth that you need, you should stick a piece of electrical tape on the drill where the lock should end.

It is necessary to drill holes on the marking strips for the nest, and make a hole for the lock with a hammer and chisel. In the hole that came out, it is necessary to insert the case and mark the dimensions of the lock and the places for the screws at the end of the doors. Then we fix the structure with screws, install the spindle and handle.

We install the cover and mark it on the jamb. We gouge a niche using a chisel and attach the pad by marking the mounting holes.

How to replace a larva in a door lock

The larva is simply changed manually, by unscrewing the 1st bolt, which is slightly lower than the locking bolt. It is necessary to open the doors and inspect the locking mechanism from the front side of the door. Unscrew the fasteners, take out the core, if it does not come out, try to twist the key in the lock.

We turn to the installation of the latest locking mechanism. This is done in such a way that the mounting hole is located near the middle of the door.

Replacing the larva is easy, but installing a lock in iron doors is even more difficult.

We repair the door handle

To quickly solve the problem that has arisen, you need to use a drill-screwdriver, small self-tapping screws with a drill, a 3 mm drill and a marker. Performing markup. It is necessary to attach the broken handle to its place on the door to determine the location of the hole for the self-tapping screw.

Then you need to drill a hole in the marked place. Taking into account the rounded shape of the handle, it is best to tilt the marking site in advance, otherwise, not possessing certain abilities, it is difficult to drill in a suitable place.

The drill will slide off before it can grab the handle.

Next, you need to attach the drilled handle to the attachment point and attach it using a self-tapping screw with a drill for this. Since there is already a hole in the handle, the self-tapping screw will not jump off anywhere and will unbeatably cut into the required place. To make it safer, you need to fix it in at least 2 places above and below, but taking into account the fact that this is a temporary measure, 2 screws from above will be completely enough.

Now we need to check the total. We returned the doorknob and it won't last long until you replace it with the newest one.

By the way, it is not worth delaying with this case, since the temporary version will become unusable extremely quickly.
