1. What is the chance that the consul will refuse? My English is normal.

If you have really normal English, you are studying in 1-4 year of full-time study, you have not had any violations of the visa regime of foreign countries (USA, Canada, Great Britain, Australia) and you have no relatives in the USA, then there is nothing to worry about.

If you have a correspondence department, then we will not be able to accept you into the program, since the probability of a visa refusal is very high and we cannot risk your money. English should be at an intermediate level, that is, you should understand that an interview at a US consulate or embassy will be in English. You will need to answer questions such as where do you study, why do you want to go to the USA, where are you going (state, city), your future responsibilities under the Job Offer?

2. How much does the Work and Travel program cost? My friend was first told one amount, then there were also visa fees and a couple of other fees. Can you please write in detail when and how much you have to pay? All together or separately in rubles and how much will be returned if the visa is refused?

The program costs $ 1690 (with job search) and $ 1390 if you have your own Job Offer. Payment is made at the exchange rate of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation on the day of payment + 3% (most of the money is transferred to the United States, therefore the cost of the program is indicated in US dollars due to frequent changes in the exchange rate). We are guided by the rate of the Central Bank of Russia, this rate is updated daily and can be tracked on the website of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation cbr.ru.

The cost of the program $ 1,690 includes: issuance of the DS-2019 form (a document confirming that you are a member of the Work and Travel program), job search (providing Job Offer), medical insurance, services of an American company and our services (assistance in paperwork for a program and a visa, consulting, processing and sending documents to the United States, etc.).

The program is paid in two installments. The first installment of 200 US dollars (in rubles at the exchange rate of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation) is paid at the conclusion of the contract. As soon as a Job Offer is selected for you, you pay the second installment - $ 1490 (in rubles at the rate of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation). As soon as all the forms from the American company come (usually in February-March), you need to apply for a visa and pay the consular fee, the US State Department fee, Pony Express services for the delivery of documents, namely:

US State Department fee 35 US dollars (at the exchange rate of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation on the day of payment);
- Consular fee 160 US dollars (the US embassy or consulate sets its own rate, which differs from the Central Bank of the Russian Federation by 2-3 rubles);
- Flights from 28,000 rubles Moscow-New York-Moscow (you can buy it yourself).

In the event of a visa refusal, you lose:

$ 300 from the paid program cost $ 1690;
- Collection of the US Department of State 35 US dollars;
- Consular fee 160 US dollars.

Briefly about the program

Work and Travel USA is one of the most popular student exchange programs in the world. The bottom line is that under this program, students of universities from other countries can work in the United States for 2.5-4 months (summer period) and simultaneously travel around the country and discover it for themselves. To participate in the program, you must be a full-time student of the university between the ages of 18 and 23 and speak English at a conversational level. As a rule, students of 1-4 courses participate in the program, visas for students who graduated from the 5th year, for obvious reasons, are reluctant to give.

Program cost

The cost of participation in the program: from 1690 dollars together with a round-trip ticket from Moscow to New York. This cost includes the collection of a package of documents by an intermediary company. Additionally, you can pay for the selection of a job in the USA (job offer) or start looking for a job on your own.

What will I work as?

You will be working in the service industry: restaurants, shops, hotels, amusement parks, laundry facilities, or on the beach. Jobs I know in America: waiter, hostess, maid, beach lifeguard, street food vendor, 7/11 salesperson, Walmart pickup, trash cleaner.

In terms of earnings, the average rate per hour of work is between $ 8 and $ 10. However, if you work as a waiter, then the rate per hour of your work will be only $ 2. But do not despair, because no one has canceled the culture of tips, which in America are always willingly left. I can't imagine what needs to be done in order not to get a tip while working as a waiter. It often happens that, despite the modest official salary, a person earns a lot on tips.

Usually in the service sector they work with 1-2 days off per week. Many take on a second or even third job in order to recoup the cost of the program and bring home more money. It all depends on the goal: someone is actively traveling, someone is making money, there is no single recipe for everyone.

On average, one job earns about $ 300 per week (if you work 6 days a week). When I was in America in 2008, the lowest wages were for McDonald’s workers - $ 5 an hour, the highest - for garbage collectors on the streets - $ 13-14 per hour.

What should be done to participate in the program?

  1. Find an International Programs Center in your city. For example, the STAR Travel center is represented throughout Russia.
  2. Apply for participation in the program between September 1 and early March.
  3. Pay for participation in the program (you can in parts). Please note that some companies will take a refundable deposit from you, which will be returned in case of your successful return to your homeland (there are situations when students choose to remain illegal in the States after the end of the program or buy themselves inexpensive study at local colleges and stay).
  4. Purchase an air ticket to the nearest major city (most often to New York).
  5. Find yourself a job (the list of sites where you can find it will be provided by the Center for International Programs) or order this service for money.
  6. With a full package of documents, apply for a visa at the US Consulate (in Russia, filing is possible in Moscow, Yekaterinburg, St. Petersburg, Vladivostok).
  7. Obtaining a J-1 visa.
  8. Departure to the USA.

Where will I live in the USA?

In most cases, the place of residence is searched for locally. Students travel, as a rule, in groups, stay in temporary housing, and then look for a house or apartment. It is very convenient to book temporary accommodation on the Airbnb website: there is a guarantee that you will check in, and you can immediately see the place where you are staying. Housing rent usually costs $ 70-100 per person per week.

Where exactly will I go to work?

If you trust the selection of work for you to the managers of the student exchange center, then you can immediately stipulate the state in which you would like to work. Most students from Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus go to work in resort towns on the east coast (Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, New Jersey, Miami, etc.).

What should be done upon arrival in the USA under the Work and Travel program?

  1. Explore the city and decide on housing, if you do not want to stay in the housing in which you originally arrived.
  2. Show yourself to the employer and report that you have arrived and everything is in order (this is if you already know where you will work). If you want to look for work locally, it is best to arrive no later than mid-May to get a good job that quickly sells out.
  3. Get a Social Security Card within 2 weeks after arrival, because your employer needs it to officially register you for work. The employer will tell you exactly where you can get yourself a Social Security Card (it happens that for this you need to go to another city).

What should be done after returning to Russia under the Work and Travel program?

  1. Pick up a refundable deposit (if available) at the International Programs Center.
  2. Apply for a tax back on your earnings in America over the summer through the International Programs Center.

Personal experience

I went to the USA on this program back in 2008. She lived in a seaside resort town called Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. I went with a group of friends from the stream, there were quite a lot of us, and almost all of us later lived together in America. She worked in the Coldstone ice cream chain, also worked in a clothing store as a salesman and a waitress in an American diner.

Most of all I liked the work in the ice cream parlor: it was a lot of fun, the team was international, they spoke only in English, ate ice cream, and even took it home with them :) Once, on my shift, a satisfied visitor threw us all a note $ 100, it's hard to imagine our joy! And here is our ice cream team: Thai girls and my friends from the stream.

We first lived in one house, then moved to another. They paid for their accommodation every month. Here I immediately want to warn readers: if possible look for ways to rent housing from local residents, but not from compatriots. I don’t want to offend anyone, but communication with immigrants from the CIS countries who had settled in the States for a long time was far from always the most pleasant during my stay in America. The main goal of these people is to squeeze as much money out of you as possible. So, we rented a house from one of these representatives, paid the rent regularly, did not make a mess, and in the end, just before leaving, out of a $ 100 deposit, he returned us a miserable 8 for no apparent reason. Don't let yourself be deceived.

I arrived in the United States in mid-May and left at the end of August so as not to miss the start of the school year. At the end of my stay, I visited Niagara Falls ...

and in New York.

During the summer, she made short excursions to nearby towns in neighboring states: for example, in Ocean City or Cape May, or to an amusement park in a neighboring state.

Although the summer was filled with work, and sometimes there was no time even for calls home, I was very pleased that I spent it profitably, and not lying at home on the couch. Through my work in a cafe, I began to understand so many of the accents of English prevalent in America, it was just an amazing practice of listening skills.

My coolest memory is when, after working in an ice cream parlor, which could last as long as one in the morning, we went to the only open institution at that hour - to the pizzeria across the street and ordered a huge pizza with double cheese :) But be careful: gain weight in America, even in 3 months is more than real, try to eat healthier foods and avoid eating at night.

Salaries are paid in the form of a paycheck, which must be cashed at the bank. I recommend opening an account and adding the earned money to it since It is not uncommon for students to have both money and purchased equipment pulled out of their homes at the end of the working season.

I will not say that I earned a lot - I did not set such a goal for myself. It is enough that she did not sit around her parents' necks in the summer and provided for herself. I didn’t manage to save up for my dream - a trip to California, but I think that I will definitely go there again.

You can bring with you up to $ 3000-4000, excluding the cost of the program. Many familiar guys returned from America with laptops and cameras. As for me, I bought the newly appeared iPod nano from technology, which works for me without breakdowns to this day.

In my opinion, the Work and Travel USA program is very useful for students of the faculties of foreign languages and regional studies, because helps to improve your language skills, and this kind of practice you will not get, perhaps anywhere else. During the summer, you can find new friends, visit interesting places, and just spend time with benefit. So if you are a 1-4 year student and are considering your participation in the program, do not hesitate!

This was my first experience of a trip under the Work and Travel program. and I can say for sure that this is not only the best summer of my life, but also the most productive one! 3 months working in a large restaurant in the cultural capital of Texas gave me a whole new level of English proficiency. Well, the final month was devoted to travel: I drove 11,000 km by car - from Los Angeles to New York. A sea of impressions, a great experience and a memory for a lifetime - this is what I can say about the Work & Travel program. During the period of participation in the program, I kept his video diary about how it really was.

I have always dreamed of spending an unforgettable summer with friends, seeing all the beauty of America. Thanks to the Work & Travel USA program, I was lucky enough to visit the Grand Canyon, enjoy Niagara Falls, feel the atmosphere of mystical New Orleans, stroll the streets of Chicago, LA, Washington, New York, and this is not all that I managed to capture. My friends and I managed to break away in full, make acquaintances from all over the world and get our own idea of America and Americans, and not from the media. If you have any questions, you can write them to me on VKontakte, I will tell you how to correctly build plans in order to accomplish the unrealizable in one summer!

Participated in the INTEX Work and Travel program for two summers in a row. I managed to visit New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Niagara Falls and Puerto Rico, and my friends drove across America. Of course, I had to work a lot and spend a significant part of my time on it, but at the same time, I significantly improved my English. It was difficult at first, but after a couple of weeks everything began to improve. Thanks to the program, I learned to overcome obstacles, became independent, made friends with guys from all over the world and spent an unforgettable summer.

This was my 3rd trip to Ocean City under the Work & Travel USA program. Of course, there are many impressions about the summer and they are mostly positive, not only thanks to travel (this time I managed to go to Las Vegas, San Francisco, Atlanta, Virginia, Niagara, Washington and New York), but also to a large extent, quite good work - For 3 consecutive summers I worked in Jolly Roger park, but this time already as a supervisor. Jobs at Jolly Roger are undoubtedly one of the best places to be for students as they work. the park employs about 200 employees, all from different countries. Unforgettable impressions and acquaintances for a lifetime.

Two Work & Travel summers are the most unforgettable experience and the brightest adventure in my life. Work, leisure, shopping, travel, new friends from all over the world, the ocean and an independent life - I am very glad that I had such an opportunity! With W&T, you really start looking at the world more broadly. Everyone there experiences a sea of new impressions and vivid emotions. Intex team, I am very grateful to you for the quality service, for your attentive and individual approach!

With the help of the Intex team, my friend and I obtained visas under the Work and Travel program in the United States without any problems and set off on a long-awaited journey. It was a great time - unforgettable, amazing, full of impressions and adventures. We spent the whole summer by the ocean, visited New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Niagara Falls and, of course, our beloved Atlantic City. Thanks to the program, we not only saw many interesting places, but also got a huge experience of independent life and the opportunity to meet new friends with whom we still communicate ... and the memories of the summer in America always bring only a smile! Thanks to the guys from Intex for helping this all come true.

The last 3 years in the summer I went to America under the Work and Travel program, and all 3 times were simply unforgettable! I could not even imagine that I could travel to Las Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, look at Niagara Falls, make friends with people from all over the world, light up at concerts of famous bands!) I fell in love with this country, this incredible adventure! Thank you Intex for opening America for me!
