Founded in 1909 by an Act of the Parliament of Queensland, the University of Queensland was the first university in the state and was formally established on 16 April 1910 by the appointment of members of the University Council. Teaching began in 1911 at the Old Government Building on George Street in Brisbane. In its first year, the university consisted of three departments - Arts, Science and Engineering - and 83 students (60 men and 23 women).

Our university's more than 215,000 alumni include one Nobel laureate, CEO of a Fortune 500 company, an Oscar winner, as well as leading government officials, lawyers, academics, community leaders and artists.
