The university is divided into three main campuses, which in turn occupy a huge area and include many buildings, including historical architectural monuments, which makes the university truly unique.

Mississauga Campus, founded in 1967, is the second largest campus with 14,000 students. Located just 27 kilometers from the bustling city center of Toronto and spread across 225 acres of scenic grounds along the Credit River, it includes all the amenities a student could wish for. There are over 140 study programs to choose from, as well as purpose-built research and practice centers such as the Hazel McCalion Academic Learning Centre, the Innovation Complex and Deerfield Hall, the Erindale Studio Theater and many more. An amazing fact, many tourists specially visit the territory of the university, due to the location of historical monuments on it, which indicates that cultural life is in full swing here all year round. More than 50 student communities and interest groups have been created here, and at any time you can take part in a wide variety of activities.

Visiting students are accommodated in single rooms with all amenities, there are also common living rooms where students can communicate, share experiences and do homework. There is a choice of homestay accommodation throughout the study period.

St. George Campus is located in the heart of the city of Toronto and is the largest of the three campuses. It was founded about 180 years ago and it is here that the most recognizable architectural monuments are collected, which makes it very popular among tourist groups. From here came 9 Nobel laureates in the field of art, politics, philosophy and other sciences. There are also student organizations that allow anyone who wants to try their hand at politics, the arts and sports.

Scarborough Campus is located 15 kilometers from the center of Toronto in the suburbs of Scarborough, which, in principle, can be called an independent city, where other attractions are also located, such as the Toronto Zoo - the third largest in the world, Scarborough Bluffs Park near Lake Ontario, as well as Scarborough Historical Museum (Scarborough Historical Museum).

Only on the territory of this campus there are Co-op Programs that allow students to practice applying the acquired knowledge in practice. This is where you can establish yourself as an experienced professional and get jobs within and outside of Toronto.

The University of Toronto has one of the strongest research and teaching facilities in North America and produces students at all levels of education. Humanities education occupies a leading position in the educational program of the university, and it is in the humanities faculties that the largest number of students study. However, the University of Toronto also offers a wide range of applied educational programs. Special attention to the organization and conduct of scientific research in all disciplines has made this university the largest educational center in Canada. In many branches of knowledge, the university gives the largest number of candidates of sciences. The high quality and variety of educational programs for bachelors and masters attracts students from all over the country and the world.

Today, the university conducts classes on the main St. George campus, as well as on eleven other campuses, including Mississauga and Scarborough. Students are given loans to study at any of the colleges at the university. The system of educational colleges dates back to the very foundation of the University of Toronto and is its hallmark. Each of the seven colleges on the St. George campus represents a unique community of scholars and the humanities.

Each college has its own culture of education and communication, and basic services are provided to students everywhere, including advice on educational issues and issues related to pay and living, assistance with initial adjustment, scholarships and benefits, as well as the opportunity to participate in social programs. Many students believe that it is the specifics of the particular college in which they study that characterizes their university life. For this reason, when applying, it is important to carefully read the description of each college and choose the one that best suits the individual requirements of the candidate.

STUDY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

As a person who has never studied at a higher educational institution in Canada, and in other foreign countries of the world, I studied the traditions and rules of the university in advance from brochures and websites. I was interested in what education is, because, according to reviews, it is fundamentally different from education in Russia.

The first thing that struck me was a fully automated system for monitoring the educational process (the so-called "portal"), which includes a class schedule, lecture topics, and even subject grades. Absolutely everything that a student needs is collected there. It is also worth noting the education system associated with obtaining loans for education. You can take several subjects per semester and, as a rule, each subject per semester is equal to half the credit. At different universities (and depending on the program of study), the number of credits for graduation varies.
Canada uses a 100-point grading system. The final mark consists not only of the mark for the exam, but also for the work done during the semester. More precisely, the exam grade takes from 40% to 50% of the final one, and even if the exam is written poorly, you won’t have to take the course again (unlike in Russia), because the grades received during the semester (if good) compensate for the lost points .

Since I was planning to live in a residence (dormitory), I was interested in the types of accommodation: single rooms, double rooms, can I choose a roommate? To do this, I used another special Internet portal where you could choose your neighbors by indicating your interests and habits, for example, what are your hobbies or specialties at the university. It was also interesting what and how is located in the room, what you need to bring with you, and what is already in place? As it turned out, the furniture (wardrobe, table, bedside table, bed and several bookshelves) was already in the room, and all bedding had to be brought in by ourselves, or simply ordered additionally at the reception in the residence. Overall, residency accommodation for 8 months ranged from $6,000 to $15,000, depending on location, room, and meals.

In order to save money, you can choose accommodation in apartments. But for this, certain conditions must be met: you need to get a certificate of a bank account, a certificate from a sponsor, fill out a few papers and provide a guarantor, a person who, in case of trouble, will compensate for the losses. Registration of an apartment takes more time than registration of a residence, but it also costs less, about $ 7000-8000 for 12 months, in an apartment for 2-4 people. Apartments are usually rented by students who have studied for at least a year, because in a year you can make a choice and prepare all the documents.

I chose a single room in a residence on a mixed floor, that is, boys and girls lived there, from different specialties and different faculties. In the brochure, I read the description and looked at the pictures of the room. On the floor there was a shared kitchen, a study room, a living room, a laundry room and a toilet. In total, about 40 students lived on the floor. Each floor in the residence has a person in charge of organization and public order. In the event of an emergency, say a fire, he is responsible for the entire floor and is obliged to coordinate the students.

The university did not provide me with a transfer at the airport, so I familiarized myself with the types of travel to the campus in advance. The most budget option was to travel by public transport, metro and bus (about $ 5), but with two suitcases and ignorance of the area, I refused it. I decided to use a taxi, despite the fact that it was many times more expensive ($50-60). In addition, to be completely sure of my destination, I looked at Google Maps Street View to see what the building and street I was going to looked like. I got to the university without problems, and in the future I used public transport services.

Before leaving, I had a question about which bank card to use and whether there are common banks in Russia and Canada. It turned out that Visa and MasterCard are equally popular, but I did not find common banks. I had to go with a Russian Visa card, it is accepted everywhere, only they charge a bank commission ($2-$2.5 at a time) and a percentage of currency conversion into CAD when debiting funds (about 0.01%). Subsequently, I opened an account in a Canadian bank, received a debit card and never returned to this issue. This only required confirmation that I am a student, and the service itself is free.

For obvious reasons, many are interested in the issue of communication (correspondence) with friends and relatives who are in Russia, but nowadays, especially in Canada, you can find a Wi-Fi access point almost everywhere, and talk with everyone using Skype or other social networks , it's free. You can buy a calling card (about $5), using which calls to Russia will cost about 4-5 cents per minute, and you can call both from a mobile phone and from a payphone. You can also purchase a similar card in Russia, it costs about 500 rubles and lasts for 4-5 hours of talking.

I want to dwell separately on cellular communications. If you are going to a short-term language program in Canada, lasting no more than a month, then there is no big need to buy a SIM card. Cellular communications are much more expensive in Canada than in Russia, and most operators offer tariff plans that pay at the end of the month (like our telephone service works). This has its advantages - if you sign a contract with a telecom operator for 2-3 years, the phone is almost free. Below is the data that displays the prices for some communication services in Moscow and Toronto.
Unlimited tariff Price 1 minute Price 1 sms Internet price (3G)
Moscow 600-800 rubles/month 2-5 rub. 2 rub. 150-300 rubles/month (unlimited)
Toronto 50-80$ /month 0.25-0.35$ 0.15-0.25$ 20$ for 500Mb/month.

Before the trip, I decided to look at the price level for electronics, clothes and products in order to roughly understand how much money it would take per month. Compared to prices in Moscow, electronics and clothing in Canada are cheaper (by 15-20 percent), and almost everywhere, from small shops to large shopping centers. But food is more expensive, although if you buy them in large supermarkets or with discount coupons, then the prices are almost the same as in Moscow.

In fact, I ended up spending about $250-$300 per month on average, not counting the food and lodging expenses that were previously paid ($1,500 per month for food and accommodation in a single room in a residence). Of these, about $100 was spent on entertainment, such as movies, museums, excursions and other recreational activities, $100 on clothes and daily consumption goods, and the remaining $50 on various little things, public transport, telephone, snacks. It is worth noting that, as a rule, the first and last weeks of your stay are the most expensive. The first is to settle down, buy textbooks, stationery, etc., and the last, usually to buy souvenirs. Let me remind you that the tax on goods in Ontario is 13% of the amount of goods.

The cost of lunch in fast food restaurants is on average $7-10, a cafe or restaurant will cost from $15-50 per person, depending on the class of service. In Canada, it is not difficult to find a place where you can eat, choosing almost any cuisine in the world.

I would also like to note the Students International company, and express my deep gratitude to them for their help in obtaining a visa and providing consulting services related to studying and living in Canada, because until I used their services, I was denied a visa 2 times (!!!), and I almost lost hope of leaving for Canada. I was very pleased with the service, sociable and polite staff, advice and visa services provided to me, so now I recommend Students International to my friends.

From the reviews, and then from my own experience, I realized that people in Canada are open, you can easily ask for help, they will tell and show everything, so I get a good impression about the people as a whole. It is also worth noting that there is no such nationality as a Canadian, because most of the people are visitors or immigrants, and there are practically no native Indians left in Canada. People in general are very friendly!

The University of Toronto is a very, very prestigious university ... If you ask how it is guaranteed to enter it, I will say this: you can, of course, try to enter here for a Bachelor's degree right after school, but enrollment will be unlikely - there is too much competition! For guaranteed admission, it is better to first take a preparatory course, which will prepare you for a truly serious study, improve your level of academic language and where you will study a number of academic disciplines.

Good luck and success to everyone on the way to the implementation of their plans!
