CHAPTER 4

^ SEXUAL PERVERSIONS AND PECULIARITIES OF SEXUAL BEHAVIOR IN THE JEWS

The upbringing of the majority of Jews in no way contributes to the development of their propensity for sexual perversions. Already at school, a twelve-year-old boy read a volume of the Talmud devoted to marital relations, where nothing was hidden. Natural teenage curiosity was satisfied in the most appropriate way, and one could be sure that this boy would not indulge in perverted fantasies and obscene entertainment in the future. On the solemn Day of Forgiveness, biblical lines were read about the sanctity of carnal love and the abomination of unnatural pleasures 330 . However, despite this, there were sexual perverts among the Jews, however, in relatively smaller numbers than among other peoples.

^ SEXUAL SADISM

Not a single Jew is to be found in the list of great sexual sadists such as Gilles de Ré, Landru, Petiot, Countess Bartani and many others. The very verbose Marquis de Sade only once, in Aline and Valcour, mentions the Jews in passing. Jews, accustomed to curbing their sexual instincts, staunch opponents of all violence, moreover, very vulnerable by nature, rarely allowed violence against a woman, despite the many slanderous fabrications against them. Having desired a woman, the Jew preferred to take possession of her "peacefully"; especially since, as already mentioned, in the old days, if the raped girl was Jewish, the perpetrator was obliged to marry her without the right to ever divorce. If it was a Christian woman, the consequences could be much more serious. As early as 1921 in Frankfurt, a rabbi advised girls from the community to wear pectoral crosses so that their young compatriots would be less tempted 331 . It is not uncommon these days for rape cases involving Jews to be blown out of proportion by the press, and the sentences are particularly harsh, despite the fact that the law seems to be the same for everyone. In 1976, an exceptionally harsh sentence for gang rape was handed down at the Palais de Justice in Paris, to which several young Sephardi from North Africa confessed. As the press wrote, the victim stood in front of the court, smiling, calm and self-confident, and the audience chanted anti-Semitic slogans.

Hunting can be a peculiar form of sadism that calms sexual desires. The Jews never had a penchant for this entertainment: perhaps, having become accustomed to moderating sexual desires, they calmly managed even without such a "detente" with a hint of sadism. However, in Palestine, where there were almost no large and predatory animals, hunting could not become a custom among the ancestors of the Jews. It is noted, however, that Jews, even in childhood, do not have a penchant for games associated with hunting: they do not destroy bird nests, do not set snares, and do not like to fish 332 ; it is also known that many famous Jews had an aversion to hunting. Henri En said that he felt unity not with the hunter, but with the game 333 . Walter Rathenau, a German minister, a Jew by birth, put it short and unequivocal: "When a Jew says that he hunts for his own pleasure, he lies." A well-known writer - and a Jew not only by mother, but also by father - R. Gary in "The Roots of Heaven" stood up for animals and told about his disgust for people who cruelly persecute them. Only one Jew was a matador - this is Sidney Franklin, a native of Brooklyn, who killed 3,000 bulls.

The biblical commandment "Thou shalt not kill" was deeply imprinted in the minds of the ancient Jews and inspired their descendants with an aversion to bloodshed. When slaughtering livestock, Jews cut the animal's throat so that all the blood flows out, which often served as a pretext for the Nazis to accuse them of "Asiatic sadism"; in fact, this bloodshed is caused by nothing more than an aversion to blood: with a different method of slaughter, blood would inevitably have to be eaten in violation of the Leviticus prohibition. Nevertheless, the staunch Nazi Australian Eric Butler, in an open letter that sold 100,000 copies, urged readers to go to the Jewish slaughterhouses and drive out the rabbis and murderous massacres 335 .

The aversion of the Jews to blood may explain the fact that they rarely commit crimes, although this was often explained by their lack of truly masculine qualities. In March 1942, the demographer G. Moko wrote in the pro-Nazi magazine Etni Française that crime among Jews was lower than even among Aryan women. The head of the police station in New York claimed that the negligible amount of bloody crimes among Ashkenazi immigrants is compensated by numerous quarrels and scandals 336: only in curses and curses do their sadistic tendencies, if any, find an outlet. However, this age-old aversion to blood did not prevent the Jews from ancient times being accused of committing ritual murders; even today, historians consider it quite possible that at one time some Jew, driven to the extreme by these unfounded but persistent accusations, could have committed such a murder. In 1913, in Kyiv, the Jewish leader Beilis, nicknamed Tzadik, was accused of ritual murder; the French press transcribed this word as "sadist", and readers finally became convinced that all Jews are sadists.

A sadist may derive satisfaction from watching or conjuring up a bloody murder, but we do not know of a single Jew who loves to gawk at the death penalty, such as the poets Swinburne and Villiers de Lisle-Adan, who never missed a single guillotining. Nevertheless, in the chronicle of the newspaper Action Française of June 19, 1939, it was reported that the senator of the Alpine department, J. L. Dreyfus, appeared in prison to the murderer Weidman on the morning before the execution itself. He was not present at the execution, but the newspaper downright savored this "evidence of the sadism inherent in his people."

Bloody fantasies can also satisfy a sadist. But, judging by numerous literary testimonies, they rarely visit Jews. An exception is Daniel Barros of New York, who imagined himself as the executioner of his fellow believers: he saw how he tortured them with a piano, the strings of which were tied to their naked nerves. He always carried with him a piece of toilet soap labeled "the purest Jewish fat" and, hiding his origin, joined the Nazi party, but was exposed and shot himself 339 .

^ SEXUAL MASOCHISM

The well-known English sociologist and erudite R. Eisler 340 claims (although not a single Jewish source has yet boasted of this fact) that the Viennese writer Sacher-Masoch, whose name during his lifetime served to designate the phenomenon of masochism, was very likely a Jew by father, and possibly maternal. The surname of his father - Sacher - Eisler derives from the Hebrew "sugar", falcon, and the surname Masoch (this is the surname of his mother) was often appropriated by Polish Jews. In his first novel, written at the age of 30, Sacher-Masoch described life and life in the Jewish towns of Galicia. He also wrote an essay on Shabbatai Zevi, the Jewish False Messiah, and was friends with many Jews, in particular the Ries family of Hungary. When he arrived in Paris, where he was awarded the Legion of Honor for his literary work, the Chief Rabbi of France sent him congratulations - he was hardly mistaken about him. Indeed, even if Sacher-Masoch was not a Jew, he could very well be, both in appearance and intellect, suggestive of a ghetto, not to mention masochism, a very common Jewish character trait.

One of the forms of sexual masochism was already inherent in King Solomon, who in his old age was aroused by numerous wives with pinches and injections. Xaviera Hollander, New York's most famous "madame", whose clients included many Jews, noted that most of them were "touched". “They wanted to be slaves,” she wrote. So, one businessman, in the past a prisoner of a concentration camp, enjoyed only when a woman beat and insulted him. Another man, miraculously surviving in the death camps, could copulate only if a swastika was painted on his body 341 . I told in one of my books how a well-known lawyer, a Sephardi by origin, who spoke on the most high-profile cases concerning the Jews, eloquent, with a brilliantly delivered voice, experienced indescribable pleasure under the streams of girls from the Sphinx urinating on him 342 . It is also said that some Jews find satisfaction in early sexual impotence, regarding it as a severe and painful punishment; a woman sexologist from Paris writes about a Jew who took pleasure in feeling impotent 343 .

Humiliated for centuries, the Jews knew how to find a bright side in every humiliation, to make it a cause for celebration. So, during Holy Week they were forbidden to go out; but, sitting at home, they sang hymns of thanksgiving, in which they compared themselves to a beautiful princess hiding in her castle. In addition, the Jews, inspired by the example of the holy martyrs, could themselves seek pleasure in suffering. The psychoanalyst Levenshtein writes: “More than once, when talking with Jews, I found out that they identify themselves with Christ and dream of sharing his fate” 345 .

In the shtetls of Eastern Europe, those guilty of violation of ritual purity, adultery or masturbation often asked the rabbi for severe punishment, and the rabbi, taking into account his desire, indeed sometimes punished more severely than he should have 346 . Punishment reminded of the committed sin, which further increased the pleasure received from it. After repentance, flogging with a belt was accepted, the maximum number of blows was the sacred number 39. Corporal punishment existed until recently 347 . Pious Jews from Marrakesh on the day of Yom Kippur gave themselves the same 39 blows on the back or on the head, though not with a belt, but with a stick 348 . This scourging might have disposed penitent sinners to enjoy the blows of conjugal intimacy, as what has been called "English education" has predisposed many English husbands to it since school; however, we must not forget that Scripture teaches a wife never to humiliate her husband.

The masochistic tendencies of some Jews also made their way onto the movie screen. They were shown in 1973 by Woody Allen in the film Everything You Should Know About Sex, where the rabbi, lying at the feet of his wife, who at that time is eating a pork chop, begs her to tie his hands and feet with silk stockings and give him a good beating .

HOMOSEXUALITY

"Leviticus" punished the Jews: "Do not lie down with a man as with a woman." Homosexuality was attributed to other nations; it was believed that in many countries it is customary. However, the "Book of Judges" tells how the Israelites attacked the tribe of the Benjamites because they outraged the believer 349; and Potiphar bought Joseph, not for his wife, but for his own pleasures. In one Hebrew source it is even said that the fight between David and Goliath flared up because the latter vainly sought the favor of the young David 351 . After the conquest of Palestine by Alexander the Great, Jewish youths adopted the manners and customs of the Greeks and began to attend gymnasiums, where nudity and pederasty were in the order of things. Orthodox Jews watched with pain as young people acquire new habits, so far from Judaism. The revolt of the Maccabees in 168 BC was partly directed against the gymnasiums, the concentrated image of Hellenism with all its corruption 352 . To this day, Jews celebrate Hanukkah - the day of the victory of the Maccabees over the Hellenes, but the anti-pederastic motives of the uprising are now bashfully hushed up. Protesting in 1979 against the construction of a stadium in Jerusalem, devout Israelis said that it would symbolize a return to Hellenism - after all, the Greeks loved sports 353 ; - weren't the Jews also afraid of a return to the shameful "Greek love"?

Titus, after the victory over the Israelites, took to Rome, among other trophies, many boys of 15-17 years old, who were to become the "favorites" of the rich Romans. The Egyptians in those days forced travelers, most often Jews, to give them blowjobs; it was believed, however, that from this occupation they lose their voice (this is reported by the Greek writer of the 2nd century Lucian) 354 .

The Talmud was irreconcilable to homosexuality: thus, if a man and a woman were at the same time threatened with rape, then the man should first be rescued in order to save him from the greatest infamy 355 . A man should have resisted a rapist even at the risk of his life, while a woman was not obliged to pay such a high price for her honor 356 . To avoid temptation, Rabbi Yudach forbade two single men to sleep under the same blanket. Maimonides, on the contrary, believed that it was not shameful for two Jews to be alone, but the ban would give rise to sinful thoughts in them. The desire of a man to resemble a woman, and vice versa, has always seemed suspicious; a woman should not dress in men's clothes, and a man should not shave off his pubic hair, as women do. Such people, as it were, lost their sex; meanwhile, even animals should not be deprived of sex: only the hand of an atheist could perform castration.

Jewish law was so intransigent to homosexuality for a variety of reasons. A country located on a plain, not protected by natural barriers from invasions, needed a large population, and therefore a high birth rate, which is incompatible with homosexuality. The peoples around which the ancient Jews lived were famous for their debauchery; the severity and purity of morals allowed the Jews to compare favorably with all others. It was an ancient military custom to abuse a defeated enemy; assimilation to the defeated caused even greater contempt for passive homosexuals. During the Six Day War, the Israelis, as if reminiscent of the custom of their ancestors, took off their pants from the prisoners and laid them face down on the sand.

In the Middle Ages, homosexuality, at first glance, was not common among Jews. However, in the XVII century. the Portuguese anti-Semite Costa claimed that all Jews are "sodomites from the Berber countries" 357 . Indeed, the mores of the Muslims may have influenced North African Jews. In the last century, there were Jewish establishments for male pleasures in Morocco; men from these establishments often changed into women's clothes; access there was allowed only to the circumcised, the houses were called "kosher" 358 . It seems that such customs are rooted in antiquity: men who traded forbidden love lived in ancient Jewish temples.

Today, homosexuality among Jews is best studied in the United States. Two sociologists surveyed 1,000 homosexuals 359 . Parents of Jewish homosexuals were more likely to be aware of the affections of their sons than parents of boys of other faiths, and not by chance: the Jewish family has always been distinguished by closer ties, greater closeness between parents and children. Another distinguishing feature of Jewish homosexuals is that they often turn to a psychiatrist, perhaps due to the anxiety and introspection inherent in the sons of Israel. If these homosexuals are devout, they tend to avoid elaborate love games, as if thereby reducing their sin. In addition, they often seek justification for themselves in the Holy Scriptures.

In the 40s. of our century, according to Kinsey, the number of homosexual Jews in the United States was small, and among the especially devout - even an insignificant percentage. Even among unbelieving Jews, this percentage was lower than among adherents of other religions 360 . More than 20 years later, specialists from the Kinsey Institute, based on surveys in American prisons, concluded that among convicted sex offenders, only 1% were Jews, and there were very few homosexuals among them. Scholars believe that these figures can be explained by the influence of traditional Jewish upbringing 361 .

Sodomy with wives also helps some husbands avoid the temptation to seek the services of a passive homosexual. The Talmud says that a husband is free to do whatever he wants with his wife - this opens the "green light" to anal intercourse 362 . In many erotic novels by Jewish writers in the United States, anal intercourse is repeatedly mentioned, and in some it even turns into an obsession, despite the appearance and wide distribution of birth control pills that deprive this method of intercourse of its original goal - not to conceive a child. One well-known French sexologist (half-Jew himself) told me that he persuaded his wife with admirable perseverance for ten years until she agreed to anal intercourse 363 . The Jewish filmmaker Gainsbourg, in Love, Me Too, is downright admiring actress Jane Birkin, his wife, making sodomy on-screen with a truck driver. One of Charlie Chaplin's wives once accused her husband of sodomy; on this basis, she obtained a divorce, and the American press, greedy for sensationalism, savored its cause in every way. As already mentioned, Jewish women gain weight early, the most comfortable position with an obese woman is a man behind; husbands thus satisfy their propensity to sodomy without great sin.

However, American Jews find that there are still too many perverted homosexuals among their co-religionists. One of them, writer Gail Parent, believes that Jews acquired a taste for homosexuality during World War II; drafted into the army, they were cut off from their families for a long time and lived in a male environment; homosexuality in this war, writes Gail Parent, disabled more full-fledged men than all the battles 365 .

In recent years, when Judaism is losing ground, and tolerance for sexual perversions is growing, more and more homosexuals appear among American Jews, and most importantly, they are less ashamed of their inclinations. In San Francisco, Jews already make up 3% of all homosexuals 366 . The most famous of them, municipal councilor Harvey Milk, was assassinated in 1978. Homosexuals form unions, often have their own synagogues, some even hope to get married according to Jewish law. American homosexuals first came together in 1968 in Los Angeles, and two years later an international congress of Jewish homosexuals was held in the same city. They also arrange street processions: quite recently, 60 homosexuals, as well as 10 lesbians and about 300 sympathizers, walked through the streets singing; a banner was carried at the head of the column; sympathizers included parents, relatives and ex-spouses 367 . Another international congress of Jewish homosexuals, where I was admitted to collect information, took place on July 18-20, 1979 in Tel Aviv. More than one hundred delegates from nine countries took part in its work. In Paris, with the active assistance of Pastor Doucet, a society of Jewish homosexuals was created at the Center of Christ the Liberator. The society meets once a month, I was admitted to its meeting in May 1978. Members of this society took an active part in the demonstration of homosexuals on October 23, 1960 in Paris. Similar unions were formed in many countries, even in Iceland, where, despite the small population, 200 Jewish homosexuals 368 united.

Jewish writers in the US have always been interested in the roots of their compatriots' homosexuality, which they now flaunt so openly. Saul Bellow believes that Jewish parents with their moral principles and endless instructions accustom their sons to obedience and passivity; a young man brought up in this spirit will be defenseless against an active pederast, if he shows enough authority. Parents can also instill in their son the horror of the Aryan vamp woman, greatly exaggerating her atrocities; he is also afraid of the young Jewess: after all, she promises to eventually turn into a likeness of his overbearing mother. Homosexual love allows him to avoid both dangers.

Many famous Jews in different eras had homosexual inclinations. Some of the most advanced interpreters of the New Testament, not afraid to be called blasphemers, argue that the greatest of homosexuals was none other than Christ. Even Diderot, in his correspondence, found it difficult to determine his sexual preferences: the philosopher of the scene in Cana of Galilee led to these thoughts, where Christ looked either at the girl’s chest or at the thighs of St. John 369 . At the beginning of the XX century. the Italian writer Giovanni saw homosexual features in the face of the Savior. F. Roth imagines him in a nightgown, turning first one cheek, then the other, and in general with all the habits of a “queer” 370 . The iconography of Christ is characteristic: not a single image shows a sexual organ under clothing. In addition, long straight hair, a beardless, femininely tender face, small and sawn-off teeth could excite the imagination of homosexuals and lead them to the idea that Christ is “their own” for them and came to earth for their salvation, and not only for salvation of heterosexuals. To complete the picture, we must also mention the invariable restraint of the Savior in communicating with the opposite sex, this also confused many minds. For example, one elderly Englishwoman was so struck by this fact that, as the sexologist N. Hare writes, at a lecture at Conway Hall, London, she asked if Christ was impotent.

Artists are also inclined to attribute homosexuality to Christ. Dane Jens Jürgen Thorson wanted to make a film about Caen: Christ washes the feet of his disciples and then indulges in sinful amusements with St. John, Mary Magdalene and Martha at the same time 371 . On July 12, 1977, a London court passed an exceptionally harsh sentence (not canceled even after an appeal) to Gay News magazine, published by homosexuals: a poem by the poet J. Kirkup was published there, hinting at the sinful ties of Christ not only with his disciples, but also with Roman centurions 372 .

With such a divine - albeit problematic - antecedent, it is not surprising that homosexuality among the Jews takes on a sometimes mystical connotation. The sexologist Dr. Zigetti asked the question: "What drives a significant number of homosexuals to the well-known religious mysticism?" 373 . In addition to the instructive example of God, whose bisexuality, according to the Zohar, is obvious, his feminine features could cause not only the obedience of a person to the Almighty, but also the obedience of a passive homosexual to an active one.

At the congress of Jewish homosexuals in Tel Aviv, I was simply amazed by the religious fervor of its participants. At the end of one of the banquets, the texts of prayers and hymns were distributed, and all those present performed them with great feeling. Before the closing of the convention, all the delegates gathered on the lawn and again read prayers and sang hymns. They thanked the Almighty for having created them as homosexuals and prayed to bless their union. Many of them were truly angelic gentle and beautiful. As already mentioned, young Jews, in order to reconcile homosexual inclinations with religious feelings, founded synagogues for homosexuals; the first was opened in 1972 in Los Angeles; there were also homosexual rabbis. True, devout Jews look askance at these "jolly synagogues" and see in them something like a dating club for pederasts 374 .

In the 17th century Shabbatai Zevi, a Sephardi from Smyrna, who declared himself the Messiah, was accused of pederasty 375; two of his marriages were annulled, tk. he did not live with wives; he did not live with a third wife, this marriage did not suffer the fate of the two previous ones only because Shabbatai was very condescending to the adventures of his wife (a former prostitute) and long before Rasputin taught that one must wallow in sin in order to know the ecstasy of repentance.

Around the same time, another great mystic - albeit with more elevated views and a not so scattered way of life - Spinoza, who did not have a single adventure with a woman, claimed that heterosexual relationships were disgusting to him, because "you have to connect the idea of ​​\u200b\u200bthe beloved with secret places of her body and natural functions" 376 . However, his favorite student constantly lived under his roof, which aroused jealousy and suspicions of homosexuality. And the famous homosexual Max Jacob, a native of a Jewish family, among other visions that visited him, mentions Christ, who came up to his bed. This vision shook him deeply for the rest of his life; he stopped communicating with homosexuals, was baptized and became famous for his piety. Believers saw him in the cathedral: he was on his knees, beating his chest with his fists and moaning loudly. "This is a converted Jew," the priest explained. During the occupation, Max Jacob was arrested and soon died. A marble slab from the Reich Chancellery was placed as an expiatory gift on his grave in Saint-Benoit on the Loire 377 .

Another well-known homosexual, also converted to Christianity, the writer Maurice Sachs, about whom Violetta Leduc spoke in detail, entered a theological seminary at the age of 18 after baptism. His godfather was Jean Cocteau. He felt great in a cassock, probably seeing in it a semblance of a woman's dress (who knows, maybe all priests are subconscious homosexuals?). During the war, hiding his origins, he joined the Gestapo in Hamburg; young Nazis generously gave him love. After the defeat of Nazism, Sachs was arrested and tortured, the bloody mess into which his body turned into was thrown to the dogs. The story of his death was published in the newspapers just at the moment when the film "Victims" was released. The anti-Semitic press seized on this story with delight, savoring the details of the horrific end of a traitor Jew who has no excuse.

Freud did not escape the suspicion of homosexuality. He never once agreed to undergo psychoanalysis, refusing, perhaps even to himself, to reveal the whole truth about himself. His attachment to Ferenczi's favorite student may seem suspicious, and one letter is known to contain ambiguous allusions. And in a letter to his friend Fliess, Freud wrote that he was experiencing "an ineradicable homosexual feeling" 379 .

Political opponents of Leon Blum spread rumors that he was a homosexual and depicted him in cartoons in a skirt, with cutesy gestures 380 .

Marcel Proust, the "first tenor" of active Jewish homosexuality, was only half Jewish, on his mother's side; but it was the mother who played a decisive role not only in the development of his susceptibility, but also in the development of his homosexual inclinations: her fanatical attachment to her son made him practically inaccessible to other women. Proust hid his vice from her, but, never fully becoming an adult, he visited haunts and even financed a “male” dating house.

One of Proust's lovers was the graceful and refined composer Reynaldo Hahn; the lovers remained inseparable to death and are buried in the Pere Lachaise cemetery a few meters from each other. In 1914, Khan enlisted in the active army so as not to be separated from one young soldier, for whom he had a tender affection 381 .

Khan, like Proust, was raised by a domineering Jewish mother, from whom he also hid his "friendships" with men; however, he happened to "turn off the path": he had episodic relationships with women, which Proust was completely incapable of.

Actor De Max, a Jew of Romanian origin, is another brilliant figure in the chain of the great pederasts of the Silver Age. André Gide gave him the first copy of his play about homosexuals with a dedication. Strewn with flowers, fragrant with the best perfumes, De Max was always surrounded by a crowd of fans, literally pulling out each other's fallen hairs, which they kept as cherished talismans.

In the same building of the German embassy in Paris, where a detailed description of the Dreyfus affair was discovered, a young Jew, Herschel Grinzpan, shot Counselor von Rath with a revolver. Historians of Nazism R. Tulman and E. Feinermann write that Grinzpan admitted to the investigator Tenier that the motive for the murder was a “family quarrel” between two homosexuals 382 . Word of the affair reached Berlin through the journalist Andreas Friedrich, who lived there. When Grinzpan was extradited by the Vichy government to the Nazis, Goebbels wrote in his notebook that the killer should not be tried, lest there should be a scandal "over the absurd, typically Jewish assertion that there could be any sexual relationship between a miserable Jew and a brilliant German diplomat ”, which “would become the main argument of lawyers” 383 . The last entry suggests that the statement was not so absurd after all. The trial was adjourned indefinitely, and what happened to Grinzpan afterwards is unknown. As for the investigator Tenier, who probably knew too much, he enjoyed certain benefits from the Germans and was quickly returned to his homeland from the prisoner of war camp. Grinzpan's homosexuality did not become an argument in the hands of lawyers, but served as one of the causes of Kristallnacht and its terrible consequences.

Today, Jews seem to have forgotten the precepts of their ancestors and their aversion to same-sex love. There were no less Jewish homosexuals than Aryans, especially in artistic, literary, avant-garde circles. New York Mayor Edward Koch seems to have become a valuable asset in their ranks, defending homosexual love in his heartfelt speeches, although he claims that he himself had no ties with men 384 . Similarly, many Jews at the Homosexual Congress in Tel Aviv denied this: they allegedly have a tender and sublime friendship for men, and not carnal love, and they do not unite on the basis of physiology, they are simply indifferent to women. In addition, for some of the sons of Israel, to advertise their homosexual tendencies is to divert attention from their origin: perversion sometimes causes more sympathy than belonging to the Jewish people. Thus, in 1979, the Jewish journalist Roger Stephen told how homosexuality had saved his life during the occupation.

LESBIANITY

"Leviticus", anathematizing homosexual love, bypasses lesbian love in silence. The Talmud is not so lenient towards women: it orders a lesbian to be punished with canes and grants her husband a divorce, followed by a ban on her approaching women; moreover, she cannot become the wife of a rabbi 385 .

Nevertheless, several Jewish women appear on the list of famous lesbians. So, Rosa Boner, a famous animal artist, wore only trousers and had all the habits of a boy, never painted naked men and did not hide her penchant for the female sex. Empress Eugenia (who herself was somewhat masculine) patronized the artist and even rewarded her from her own hands.

During the Silver Age, we see a whole string of brilliant Jewish lesbians, none of whom made a secret of their affections: Gertrude Stein, Wanda Landowska, Winnaretta Singer. The latter - the daughter of the "king of sewing machines" Isaac Singer, a woman of typically Jewish appearance, became Princess de Polignac; she had such an aversion to men that she had no marital relations with either her first or second husband. (It is worth mentioning that her mother, a Protestant who married a Jew, served as a model for the Statue of Liberty; this statue at the gates of New York, as it were, symbolizes the union of Christians and Jews, illuminating the whole world with its light). Gertrude Stein was so masculine in appearance and manners that it might have repelled less determined lesbians who were concerned about keeping up appearances. Wanda Landowska became famous for beating her friends from other lesbians. This trio of intellectuals and "priestesses of Lesbos", as they were called, made a significant contribution to the painting, literature and music of their time.

Colette repeatedly mentions a Jewish baroness nicknamed Brioche. In all likelihood, we are talking about Baroness van Zuplen. She had a passionate and lasting relationship with the poetess Rene Vivien, whom she helped with both advice and money. Another lesbian, Martha Hanau, was married, but her marriage was, of course, fictitious; she never had affairs with men, was masculine and kept mistresses. Like a true Jew, she was crazy about music and did not lose this pleasure even in solitary confinement at Saint-Lazare prison: her maid rented a room opposite and, opening all the windows, turned on the gramophone at full volume.

In the United States, there are many Jewish lesbians among the activists in the struggle for the emancipation of women. They can be real furies, especially with an obedient puppet husband at hand. In 1979 in Boston, Shepn Koeh, an association of Jewish lesbians, conducted extensive research to find out how people like them feel to be both Jewish and lesbian. It seems that they endure their situation more easily, for the religious framework in the education of girls is less narrow than for men, and husbands are accustomed to unfailing restraint in married life.

MASTURBATION

Masturbation, an imitation of Onan's gesture, "useless ejaculation", has always been considered among the Jews a crime as terrible as killing or shedding one's own blood. The Talmudists, who were quite indulgent towards unfaithful spouses, believed that a man who indulges in “masturbation” should be cursed and expelled from the community. In the Middle Ages, onanism was also considered among the Jews the greatest sin. The rabbis taught many precautions to avoid temptation. A man should not sleep on his stomach or back, but only on his side 387 . In order for the penis not to rise from rubbing against the pants, they had to be very wide. When urinating, it was not recommended to take hold of the penis with your hand (unless the spouse was nearby and it was possible to immediately carry out intercourse) 388 . A. Edwards and R. Masters write that quite recently in North Africa, Jews - the descendants of the Jews once expelled from Spain - in the most pious families retained the habit of urinating without helping themselves with their hands; rabbis taught this to boys in schools. If, however, it was impossible to do without a hand, it was recommended to hold the penis either at the very head, or, conversely, at the base, and preferably through a dense tissue, in order to avoid exciting touches 389 . One should also not look at one's own or someone else's sexual organ in order to avoid sinful thoughts 390 .

In 1847, Dr. Vannier, a physician from Le Havre, came to the conclusion that the children of Jews were less prone to masturbation than all others. He saw the reason for this in early circumcision and called for the introduction of this practice among Christians in order to save babies from the painful vice that threatens them in the future (especially since it was at this time that Jackson discovered anesthesia) 391 .

A century later, A. Kinsey found that the children of American Jews masturbate much less frequently than the children of all other US citizens, and the lowest rates were in religious families; for unbelievers, the percentage was slightly higher than 392. Today, when the Protestant clergy have recognized the harmlessness of masturbation, Orthodox Jews still adhere to the precepts of their ancestors and categorically forbid it. This prohibition is also easier to implement because believing Jews get their sons out of bed very early to read the first morning prayer at sunrise, thus the boys are spared from the morning erection: this is the lot of those who luxuriate in the morning in a warm bed for a long time. In the religious quarter of Tel Aviv, I woke up at dawn from the hum of muttering prayers of male voices - senile and completely childish.

Meanwhile, American Jewish writers portray masturbation without complexes, and sometimes even picturesquely: with the help of a piece of liver, for example, either on the roof of a bus, or on a toilet bowl in a public toilet (F. Roth's Tailor). Curiously, it was Jewish sexologists on both sides of the Atlantic who spoke out unreservedly in defense of masturbation. Dr. Susmann, director of sex therapy at New York's Long Island Hospital, which sees hundreds of couples every year, says masturbation is normal. At the American University of Stony Brook, which also treats sexual disorders, visiting rabbis explain to patients that "if masturbation helps to keep the family, then masturbation is necessary" 393 .

Cases of masturbation among Jews are recorded in biblical texts. Tamar, the wife of Onan, who did not receive satisfaction from her unworthy husband, and then became a widow, indulged in this occupation even with excessive zeal; therefore, the ancient Jews began to call a masturbating man by the name of Onan, and a woman by the name of Tamar 394 . According to Kinsey in 1950, unbelieving Jews masturbate two to three times as often as believers. This hostility of Jewish believers to onanism can explain the fact that their sensuality, as a rule, "wakes up" only with marriage: it cannot be otherwise in the absence of clitoral stimulation. Freud, who lived among Jews - zealots of traditions, extended to all women what is most likely characteristic only of Jewish women. He was supported by his "faith sister" and favorite student Helen Deutsch; the organ that gave impetus to the flowering of female sexuality was for them the vagina. However, times are changing, and today a Jewess from California, L. Barbash, is the greatest guardian of female group masturbation with mentors.

POLLUTIONS

Involuntary ejaculation, called wet dreams, brought a lot of worries to the ancient Jews. A man who ejaculated became "unclean", so the Talmud contains a whole list of precautionary measures to help avoid wet dreams during sleep. It was recommended before going to bed to read aloud a few psalms and ask God's help against nightly pollution. A man shouldn't sleep alone. Waking up at night, he also had to read prayers 396 . If sin nevertheless happened and ejaculation occurred, one should immediately wash oneself or even take a bath and pray to the Lord for mercy 397 . It was also customary among the Samaritans to keep away from the synagogue the next day, not to raise their voices, and not to touch sacred objects until nightfall. It seems that these customs were adopted by Catholic theologians: it was customary for Catholics after pollutions to ask for forgiveness from God, overshadowing themselves with a cross.

Believing Jews, reading a prayer, constantly sway back and forth and right and left; from such rotational movements, some of the faithful, like the ancient dervishes, fall into a state close to a trance. There is a suspicion that these movements cause wet dreams. Havelock Ellis mentions temples in Central India, where something like a swing was set up to bring the believer to orgasm with measured swaying 398 . Magnus Hirschfeld, the founder of German sexology, observed Palestinian Jews in prayer and came to the conclusion that due to the rotational movements of the torso, “one desire is subconsciously replaced by another” 399; aspiration to heaven is replaced by a completely earthly aspiration. On the benches of the synagogue and near the walls of the temple, the faithful rotate their torso “crescendo”, faster and faster, then suddenly freeze with a dull groan and after a while resume movement, but much more slowly, and continue to read the prayer in a hoarse, as if cracked voice, which is usually the case with man after orgasm.

BESTIALITY

Bestiality, repeatedly stigmatized both in the Bible and in the Talmud, is sexual intercourse between a person and animals. Voltaire in his "Philosophical Dictionary" wrote, referring to the Jews: "You claim that your mothers did not sin with goats, but tell me, why are you the only people on earth in which this has never been forbidden by law? Would it have occurred to legislators to pass such a strange law if this offense were not common? The books Exodus and Leviticus prescribe to put to death both the bestial bearer and his victim. In the Middle Ages, Christians followed the example of the Jews: the guilty were burned at the stake along with a cow or a donkey - his guiltless accomplice.

One English pastor, a great specialist in sermons on sexual topics, assured that, according to many historians, Jews indulged in bestiality most often with pigs, perhaps it was this sin that prompted Moses to mortify his flesh 400 . The ancient Jews were for the most part a pastoral people, and Kinsey showed how widespread bestiality was among shepherds, cattlemen, and other people who dealt with animals by occupation. The Talmud forbade widows to keep dogs in the house, so as not to be suspected of perverted intercourse 401 . Talmudists believed that a woman should not look at a donkey passing along the street, nor should a bachelor be a shepherd. One of the interpreters of the Talmud believed that Adam, before the appearance of Eve, copulated with animals, and the point is only that with a woman he received more satisfaction 402 . Even today, in many Jewish communities, surprisingly few animals, especially dogs, are kept in their homes: as if the collective subconscious mind remembers ancient prohibitions and fears temptation.

INCEST

Among the ancient Jews, a mother who sinned with her son was stoned to death, and a father who seduced his daughter was burned alive at the stake. But these measures seem to be nothing more than a threat to instill fear in parents who have sinful thoughts 403 . Even today, on the Yom Kippur holiday, the 18th chapter of Leviticus is read, which speaks of forbidden relationships and, in particular, of incest 404 . Nevertheless, the Romans considered the Jews to be incestuous, perhaps because they had frequent marriages between blood relatives. Christians, who at first were confused with Jews, were forced to "wash off" this shameful reputation 405 .

The modern rabbi A. Weil gives an excuse for Lot's incest with his daughters: after the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, it was necessary to repopulate the country. Even in ancient times, the Jews also found a worthy explanation for the act of Jeremiah, who made his daughter a mother: Rabbi Ben Sirach was born from this union. Ben Sirach's mother bathed for a long time in the reservoir, where Jeremiah also plunged: the father's seed was brought by water into the mother's womb, thus, incest proper did not occur 406 . In the XVI century. the famous Marrano physician Ammatus Lusitanus referred to this precedent in order to justify a nun accused of debauchery who had a miscarriage 407 .

In the days of ghettos and closed communities, Jews lived very crowded. A teenage boy was forbidden to associate with both Jewish women and non-Jewish women; sisters growing up nearby could be a temptation for him. In order to avoid temptations, parents, as already mentioned, married their children very early. Until very recently, in Jewish families in Central Europe, boys and girls were brought up separately and could communicate only through their overly cautious parents 408 .

Rabbi Drakh, who later converted to Christianity, believed that marriage between an uncle and niece was permissible, but not between an aunt and a nephew: respect for an older relative would not allow a husband to beat his wife 409 . At the beginning of our century, incest between father and daughter was not uncommon among the cutters of the Antwerp goldsmiths, most of whom were Jews. Dr. E. Svenn, who devoted himself to the prevention of tuberculosis among these workers, believed that it would be better if they cohabited with their daughters, like Lot, than squander their earnings in establishments with a bad reputation 410 . In our day, in an atmosphere of freedom of morals, the laws of Israel do not punish the father who sinned with his daughter, leaving him to the wrath of the Lord; only if the victim is under 21, the perpetrator is punished with five years in prison.

As already mentioned, a Jewish mother often takes care of her son almost to old age; this can cause both thoughts of incest, but, as a rule, everything is limited to thoughts. The American writer J. Friedman in his novel Mother's Kiss describes the torment of an elderly Jewish woman whose husband is impotent; she is haunted by the desire to deprive her son of innocence, but she still does not dare to take the first step towards rapprochement. And the mother of Marcel Proust, in one of the tender letters that she and her son exchanged while living under the same roof, wrote about the broken glass in the door: “You know that in our Temple broken glass is a symbol of an indestructible union” (a hint of that at a Jewish wedding at the feet of the newlyweds they break a glass and trample on fragments) 411 .

^ JEWS AND EROTOMANIA

Although the ancestors of the Jews by no means considered sexual intercourse shameful or unclean, they never indulged in sex too zealously. King Solomon, the greatest polygamist in history, rather maintained his prestige: countless wives and concubines served as proof of wealth, in addition, marriages helped to make the necessary connections.

In ghettos and Jewish quarters, carnal desires have always been in the background for a man; he was overcome by other concerns: how to get an education, win a position in society, make himself respected. Immoderate sensuality would only be a hindrance to him, and rampant carnal love in the Christian world aroused in the Jews only surprise with an admixture of contempt. Boccaccio in the 14th century sympathized with the Jews and associated with many of them. In one of the first short stories of the Decameron, he tells how the Jew Abraham went to Rome and was struck by the licentiousness that reigned in the city of the Pope. Returning home, Abraham decided to be baptized, because, in his opinion, God could show such condescension only to adherents of the true faith, i.e. to the Christians.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the famous Jew Süss Oppenheimer lived, whose story was transferred to the screen two centuries later. He was in the service of the Duke of Württemberg and seduced many German women, including the wife of Gotz's adviser and possibly her daughter. However, the list of his victories is rather banal for a titled person, a close friend of the duke himself. In the same century, another Jew, this time the priest da Ponte, left memoirs of numerous amorous adventures, but they cannot be compared with the victories of his friend Casanova, who helped him write the libretto for Mozart's Don Giovanni. After the French Revolution, the Jew de Carpentre, after being abducted and forcibly baptized and then returned to his family, became famous for his adventures, and also began to write frivolous poems and created an Essay on Tender Feelings, but he, apparently, was uneasy in the shoes of a libertine, and he committed suicide 412.

The profession of a peddler was one of the most familiar to the Jews, it gave them easy access to any home, many did not neglect the opportunities that opened up. Jakob Frank, a follower of Shabbatai Zevi, like him, who cared for redemptive sin, boasted of his connections with the Turkish women 413 . Moroccan Jews also took advantage of the opportunity to sneak into the houses of Muslims for brief meetings with their women 414 .

Freud, with his idea of ​​pansexualism and his vast clientele among his compatriots, almost led to believe in the sexual preoccupation of the Jews. Indeed, some of them have earned themselves the reputation of seducers: Lassalle, Disraeli, even Leon Blum in his youth. Victor Noir (real name Ivan Salmon), killed at the age of 22 by Prince Pierre Bonaparte, became famous as a seducer posthumously: the bronze of his reclining sculpture in the Père Lachaise cemetery shines at the junction of the thighs, polished by the passionate touches of numerous admirers who wish to be cured of infertility 415 ; they say that some even managed to suffer. Gambetta, a Jew of Italian origin, according to Dr. Lombroso, led a wild bachelor life. Henri Bernstein had a very turbulent youth, according to his anti-Semitic doctors; one of them published his letter, confessing that his entire youth had passed "in the deepest abyss of debauchery" 416 . Today, many Jews keep up with the times: freed from religious and family fetters, carried away by the wave of erotica that has swept the world, some of them turned out to be downright giants of sex. During the events of May 1968, Cohn-Bendit admitted in an interview that he had time to "credit" 15 girls in one morning 417 . Charlie Chaplin became famous for his numerous marriages, as, indeed, many other movie stars, directors and writers, including many Jews.

For many famous Jews, association with the Aryans and receiving the most perverted pleasures from them was, to some extent, revenge for discrimination and contempt of others, these adventures gave them self-confidence. Therefore, even without being capable of much in bed, they sought to multiply the number of connections. Georges Mandel, a member of the Rothschild family, however, "from a poor branch", with a face completely devoid of vegetation, and the thin voice of a eunuch, as the gossip reported, showed everyone his mistress so that there would be no doubt about his masculine abilities; she, naturally, well paid, admitted that her "place" is just a sinecure. Solal, the hero of Albert Cohen, who witnessed the Jewish pogrom at the age of 10, swore all his life to deprive the Aryans of wealth and women, for more bloody methods of revenge are not at all in the habits of the Jews.

Collective orgies also seem to be uncharacteristic of the Jews; however, the Book of Exodus contains an allusion to at least one such orgy: about 1230 BC. the Jewish people, gathered in anticipation of the return of Moses from Mount Sinai, for the first time in history indulged in shedding sin. Moses asked the Jews to refrain until he returned, but the wait was too much and an "explosion" of long-repressed sexuality ensued. Much later, the disciples of Shabbatai Zevi, on the outskirts of Thessaloniki, organized group orgies, replacing them with prayers; this custom spread to other communities, it took the rabbis two centuries to do away with it 418 .

American sociologists J. and L. Smith conducted a survey of couples changing partners in the San Francisco area. Basically, they were middle-class intellectuals, which means that one could expect that among them there would be a significant percentage of Jews, especially since there are a lot of Jews in California in general. However, out of 500 couples interviewed in 1960, Jews made up only 7% 419 . Twenty years later, Arlene Rubin, a teacher at Brooklyn College in New York, published data from her similar study: out of a hundred couples interviewed, Jews made up a third. It seems that restraint and chastity are giving way to "open marriage" 420 .

In France a few years ago, it was extremely rare to find Jews participating in partner exchanges. From time to time, Jewish husbands visited such clubs and parties, but they were admitted there, as a rule, reluctantly, and not with legal spouses, but with temporary girlfriends.

However, there were cases when it was the Jew who distinguished himself at such parties. In the early 50s. in Paris, a sixty-year-old Ashkenazi from Vienna, the father of a famous film actress, surprised much younger men, decisively surpassing them with his truly youthful ardor and indefatigability. Today, the same changes are planned here as in the United States, and the French, accustomed to group love, are increasingly meeting Jewish couples at their parties. Despite the not too pronounced inclination of Jews to group orgies, the Polish director A. Wajda, who is not completely free from the anti-Semitism inherent in the Poles, in the film "The Promised Land" showed how Jews - men and women - indulge in sinful sin.

In order for the young Jew to avoid temptation and not develop a tendency to perversion, Judaism from ancient times did not allow the young man to remain a bachelor for a long time. This was allowed only to rabbis; all others, even the weak-minded and deaf-mute, were obliged to marry 422. If a man remained single for a long time, suspicions could arise in his sexual usefulness; such a person could not lead a school 423 . It is true that Saint Paul never married, but, in all probability, he suffered from impotence and remained a virgin for the rest of his life. The English cardinal Newman, the initiator of the revival of Christianity in England, believed that it was St. Paul's protracted celibacy that pushed him to Catholicism - he was uncomfortable in the Jewish religion; it seems that in the end Catholicism owes much of its birth to the lack of sexual impulses in the apostle. In the Middle Ages, rabbinical courts used every means to force a bachelor to marry: corporal punishment, fines, even excommunication. After the 16th century such drastic measures were abandoned. Even today, however, it is extremely rare for devout Jews to remain single, and even for unbelievers this happens less often than for all other men.

^ JEWS AND NUDISM

Nudism is now very popular in the West, and its impact on sex life is quite banal - you just have to ask any married couple visiting nudist parks and beaches. After such a walk, desire visits her husband more often, and marital hugs become hotter.

A few years ago, too impressionable men were undesirable in the ranks of nudists and were blacklisted; English nudists have even repeatedly seriously discussed the question of whether their girlfriends' pubic hair should be shaved so that they do not excite the male imagination too much 425 . Outdoor games and poetry readings were intended to dispel sinful thoughts. Today, all these precautions have become superfluous, and there is no longer any need to hide the excitement of the flesh by immersion in water or thrown over a handkerchief; shady groves and other secluded corners provide an opportunity to enter into fleeting intimate contacts, nudism is increasingly gaining its true role in sexual life.

Jews, due to traditional chastity and adherence to wide and dense robes, from ancient times should have kept away from nudist amusements. Among the ancient Jews it was forbidden to pray without clothes or in the presence of a naked person 426 . Nudity was equated by them with sexual intercourse; to appear in what the mother gave birth to close relatives was tantamount to incest. If an orthodox Jew prayed in a bath, immersed in clear water, he had to move his feet so that the water became cloudy and his nakedness could not be seen 427 . Many famous Jews, having inherited the modesty of their ancestors, openly expressed their disapproval of public exposure. In 1858, one of the Rothschilds in Scarborough (a seaside resort in England) demanded the intervention of the police, seeing that some bathers dared to enter the sea naked. The famous sexologist Wilhelm Reich, a Jew from Vienna, who allowed a lot in sexual relations, nevertheless condemned nudism. In France, despite all the commercial benefits, there was not a single Jew among the pioneers of nudism (J. and A. Durville, K. de Monego, etc.).

However, when nudism was in its infancy, it was the Jews who were considered its founders. In France, Monsignor Juin, prelate of His Holiness the Pope, in his "International Journal of Secret Societies" repeatedly blamed the Jews for its dissemination in the 1920s. Around the same time, the English anti-Semite A. Webster, a member of the Conservative Party, in her book accused them of promoting nudism in order to undermine Christian morality 429 . It is known that Hitler imposed a ban on nudist camps; their founders were extremely suspicious of him, and completely different camps awaited them.

The opinion about Jews as the founders of nudism is probably related to the fact that this movement in an organized form originated at the beginning of the 20th century. in Germany and was encouraged by the socialist municipalities, in which the influence of the Jews was very strong. In addition, major European newspapers, a large part of which were in the hands of Jews, advertised nudist parks, often publishing reports about them with relevant photographs.

Despite the role attributed to Jews in the creation of nudism, today they are much less likely to become adherents of this movement than their fellow citizens of other nationalities. In the USA, according to statistics from 1957, Jews made up only 1% of nudists; according to other sources, by 1964 this figure had risen to 2% 430 . Such a low percentage of Jews among nudists is all the more significant because the regulars of the nudist camps were, as a rule, representatives of the liberal circles of the middle class, where Jews often make up the majority. But today, as the naturist movement is gaining momentum, it is tangibly affecting Jewish communities as well. Jewish wives, today as slender as Christian women, are no longer afraid to expose their bodies in public; there are even several nudist rabbis 431, and, when undressing, they still do not part with the invariable yarmulke on top of their heads.

Strict observance of ritual purity greatly contributed to the traditional moderation in the sexual life of the ancient Jews, as well as many representatives of this people today. In addition to two weeks of abstinence every month - from the eve of menstruation to the cleansing bath - there were unforeseen circumstances. On the night after the cleansing bath, marital intimacy was not obligatory: in the absence of desire, the husband and wife could abstain from it without great sin. The husband had to take his wife's word for it, and if she wanted to avoid intimacy, she could abuse his trust by saying that she was about to start her period or that there were suspicious stains on her linen. Irregular menstruation contributed to this: the husband could not accurately calculate the timing; a short cycle further limited the time of allowed intimacy: with a cycle of 3 weeks, intimacy was possible no more than 6–7 days per month.

Back in 1789, the Polish Ashkenazi Zalkind Hurwitz wrote in his apology to the Jews: “Among them there is not a single one who would not be excommunicated from his wife for at least six months a year,” he further quoted Leon de Modena, who several centuries earlier wrote in a work on the ceremonies and customs of the Jews: "Jewish women who have irregular periods do not live with their husbands for months." The same situation was repeated much later among Catholics - supporters of the calendar method: with an irregular cycle, it was impossible to calculate the days favorable for conception, and Oginoist husbands found themselves excommunicated from the marital bed for months.

Others were added to the monthly ritual abstinence. In ancient Jerusalem, men who served in the Temple were not supposed to cohabit with their wives, just like those who performed military duty. The Biblical king David seduced Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah, the armor-bearer of Joab, who was besieging Ravath. The king recalled him from the army in order to "legitimize" Bathsheba's pregnancy, but Uriah, observing abstinence until the end of the war, did not want to "know" his wife, returned to the army and died - died as a hero of "sexual discipline". It was also necessary to abstain during mourning - both personal and general, and one of such mourning lasted 10 days. There was an opinion that sexual intercourse at the beginning of pregnancy could harm the unborn child, but in recent months it was even considered beneficial: the vagina is allegedly "lubricated" and thus prepares for childbirth. After childbirth, marital intimacy was prohibited for 40 days if a boy was born, and 80 days if a girl was born (as if as a punishment to parents for not giving birth to a son).

The Jews easily endured prolonged abstinence due to their sometimes excessive chastity. One Spanish writer even believed that it was the converted Jews who were responsible for the overly strict morality of his country in the 16th century. Maimonides approved of Aristotle, who taught that sexual desires are shameful, and in the 15th century. Solomon Durand and other rabbis prided themselves on the fact that "there are far fewer depraved people among the Jews than among any other people."

Even today, something of this traditional feature of the Jews has been preserved. Kinsey writes that the sexual activity of believing Jews is much lower than that of believing Catholics and Protestants. It is known that moderation is developed by habit; one rabbi wrote: "A man's penis is such that it behaves quietly if kept on a starvation diet, but becomes insatiable if its appetites are constantly quenched." Orthodox Jews, subject to many restrictions in their sexual life, get used to abstinence, their sexual needs become less, so moderation is developed.
