October 4 at 19:00 at the Classical Photography Gallery opens the exhibition "Playing with Time" - an art project by Andrey Gordasevich about trying to hide time by reconstructing the era of the Napoleonic Wars.

In 2014-2017 Andrey filmed the "behind the scenes" of the reconstruction as a space for playing with time. The exhibition will feature photographs of Andrei, as well as drawings by an eyewitness of the events of 1812, horse grenadier Noirot, who accidentally fell into his hands. The exhibition will run until December 4th.

The project was presented as online art within the framework of the Fashion and Style in Photography 2017 festival and became known thanks to the site http://time.gordasevich.ru, where the story about the reconstruction is presented as a visual play about the intersection of times.

Playing hide-and-seek with time is easy on a theatrical battlefield, but difficult in everyday life, which can be seen when shooting backstage: in some frames, time is “cleaned up”, and in others it is “infected” modern items. The photographer searches for scenes in a modern reconstruction that resemble Noirot's sketches.

Andrew about the project:

“In any reconstruction, people play with time. I am primarily interested not in the historical background of the game, but in the very attempt to move to another time and another space. Can this attempt be successful and to what extent? ..

In fact, reconstruction is a particular example of the creation of a myth, an imaginary world, and there are many similar attempts, everyone's life consists of them, although not everyone goes with a tent to the Borodino field. In a word, the reconstruction of the Battle of Borodino is the material, and the theme is the mythology of the time.

Noirot, whose drawings I use in the project, is a chronicler of everyday life, a witness to what in later times would be documented with a camera. Therefore, I kind of look for in modern reconstruction those motifs that Noirot painted as a witness of that time - and I remove them.

Of course, not quite linear, but there is a roll call. For me, a member of the public filming the riders with a phone is also part of the reconstruction. Because it is located just at the point of intersection of times. And cigarettes banned in the camps, too. And plastic cans of water. And cars. Moreover, the black-and-white execution of the project helps these details to sneak into the fabric of the story unnoticed, to hide.

It seems that everything is almost like in Noirot's drawings, but no ... In general, the "photographer who stops time" is a metaphor, and it is very inaccurate. A photograph can only help to remember something from some time. Something, in fact, rather vague and serving as material for fantasy. Your time is your feeling of the surrounding space. The most difficult thing is to feel the time in which you yourself live. Because it is close. There is nowhere to retreat, and close - not to focus.

Andrey Gordasevich deals with visual projects based on shooting Everyday life, documentary and street photography. These stories are published in the form of books (album "Intersections"), and in Lately- in the form of online-art, in the format of longread sites.
