It is desirable that during the construction of the garage you provide a visor over the garage door. He is assigned the role of protecting the space under him from precipitation. When making a visor, it is necessary to calculate its bearing capacity, since during a snowfall it will have to withstand the weight of the snow load. In addition to the strength characteristics, the visor must be well fixed during installation in order to strong wind didn't sail it.

Purpose of the visor

  • The visor will protect the driver in bad weather from getting wet when opening or closing the garage door.
  • The visor, to some extent, serves as protection against moisture ingress into the castle. And there are situations when the rain abruptly changes to snow and the air temperature drops rapidly. As a result, the water that gets into the lock turns into ice and then it is problematic to open it - the lock needs to be heated - which takes time and nerves.
  • Depending on the size of the visor, it partially protects the metal gate itself from being wet, which is fraught with premature rusting, since the corrosion process is accelerated in a humid environment. Consequently, the service life of the gate will be shortened.
  • Water at the entrance to the garage can turn into ice, on which it is easy for the driver to slip and get injured. In addition, multiple cycles of freezing - thawing will negatively affect the material from which the entrance to the garage is made - simply put, the process of destruction of the coating will accelerate.
  • If lighting is provided above the garage door, then the visor will protect the lighting lamp and the wiring to it from getting wet, and this is very important.

I think that there are enough reasons to make a canopy over the garage door. This will be the topic of my today's article.

By its design, the visor can be hinged or resting on supports. The choice of material for its device also depends on this. Where your garage is located also matters. It could be a garage cooperative Vacation home, detached garage near high-rise building. Depending on this, in order not to disturb the overall composition of nearby buildings, a garage with a visor is designed.

By constructive solution peaks are subdivided into one or two-pitched, arched or hipped. The most common single-pitched visors - they are easy to install and easy to use.

Visor materials:

  • metal tile;
  • Profiled sheet or galvanized steel;
  • Asbestos cement sheets (slate);
  • Polycarbonate.

The visor can be made from other materials. Their installation principle is identical. In our garages in the garage cooperative, the visors are made of monolithic reinforced concrete - as a continuation of reinforced concrete floor slabs. Everything was built centrally and according to the project. The visor's reach is 600mm, the slope is around 15%. The whole row of garages looks in the same style.

It is desirable that the canopy above the garage door has a reach of at least 600 mm and adjoins the garage structure for its entire width. Consider an example of the device of the simplest single-pitched visor, for example, from a profiled flooring.

Scope of work when installing a visor

First of all, it is necessary to perform all measurements and calculations for the materials used. If this is not a designed visor, then the calculation will have to be done independently. We decided on the width and length of the visor.

We calculate the height above the gate based on the angle of inclination of the visor, so that the gate does not touch it when they are opened, and there is free space. The angle of inclination of the visor is taken 15 - 20 degrees. We draw a sketch according to these dimensions and determine the dimensions of the length of the visor, taking into account the angle of inclination.

For the device of the frame of the visor, you can use a corner (according to the assortment from 40 to 50), a strip with a thickness of at least 6 mm and a width of 40 mm or more, a profile pipe, etc. We cut blanks according to the right size. The canopy frame can be fastened to the walls of the garage by welding or bolting with a pitch of 500 - 700 mm.

On the finished frame of the visor, we mount a crate of bars with a section of 40x40mm, with a step of 400mm. The bars need to be antiseptic, in order to extend their service life, they can be additionally painted.

On the fixed bars of the crate we lay the blanks of the profiled flooring with an overlap of one wave. Fastening is carried out with self-tapping screws.

The joint between the garage wall and the laid profiled canopy flooring is closed with a metal wall plate. We seal one edge of the plank into the plaster in a pre-prepared groove to avoid moisture ingress. Then we seal the groove with sealant or mortar.

The visor over the gate is ready. The work is simple, it is within the power of almost any man - a motorist, since it does not require special skills.

The canopy above the entrance to the garage protects the driver from getting wet in bad weather, when opening or closing the gate, it protects the lock from moisture getting into it. With a sharp change from rain to snow and a drop in temperature, the water that has entered the castle begins to turn into ice, which leads to problematic opening of the garage - the castle will need to be warmed up, and this will take time and effort.

This article will tell you how to make the right visor over the entrance to the garage.

Design features

The canopy for the garage is a fairly compact structure. It can be made by hand in a relatively short period of time. And even the simplest canopy design is able to extend the service life.

The advantages of the device are:

  • Protection of gates, hinges and locking mechanisms against corrosion when wet from rain and snow, which increases the life of the devices.
  • Prevents the accumulation of precipitation under the canopy, which can lead to soil erosion at the support pillars.
  • When opening the gate in the rain, it will provide comfort, it is better to be under the visor than in the pouring rain.
  • When installing lighting, the canopy will protect the lantern and wiring from getting wet, which is very important.
  • A beautiful visor can additionally decorate any garage door, as shown in the photo.

According to the design characteristics, the visors can be:

  • Mounted.
  • Leaning on supports.
  • Single tier. The upper part of the devices adjoins directly to the wall.
  • Bunk. The slopes are directed away from the gate.
  • Arched. Made in the form of a semicircle, their lower sections are located on the sides of the gate.
  • Tent. In this case, the products have the form of a rounded or sectioned canopy that covers the garage door from all sides.

By location, it can be:

  • In a garage cooperative.
  • In a garage arranged along with the house (see).
  • Detached near an apartment building.

Depending on these features, the material and the overall composition of the device are selected.

What materials are used to make the visor

After determining the type of structure, the material for its manufacture is selected.

It can be:

  • Metal tile.
  • Cink Steel.
  • profiled sheet.
  • Asbestos cement sheets or slate.
  • Roll materials.
  • Glass.
  • Polycarbonate.

Other materials are also used. Their assembly principle is identical.

In garages in garage cooperatives, visors are usually made of monolithic reinforced concrete and are a continuation of reinforced concrete floor slabs. In this case, everything is built centrally according to the project.

The visor hangs over the gate by 600 millimeters, the slope is about 15%, and the entire row of garages is made in the same style.

Tip: When installing a visor, its overhang above the garage door should not be less than 600 millimeters, and it should adjoin the garage for its entire width.

Single-pitched and double-pitched canopies can be built from any materials, and canopies such as a tent or arch from flexible tiles or sheets of cellular polycarbonate.

After installation, the visor should:

  • Be high strength and wind resistance.
  • Withstand prolonged snow loads.
  • Clearly fit into the style of nearby buildings. The garage visor is also a design element.

For the manufacture of a visor over garage doors you will need to purchase such a tool:

  • Apparatus for welding, power 220 volts.
  • Bulgarian.
  • Electric drill, with a set of drills of different diameters and hardness.
  • Screwdriver with a set of bits for screwing in self-tapping screws.
  • Dowel set.
  • Measuring devices.

When installing a wooden frame under the visor, you will need:

  • Hacksaw.
  • Hammer.
  • Chisel.
  • Various nails.

How to make a single-sided hanging canopy

This is a fairly simple design, which has a small weight and relatively low price. For the manufacture of the device, you can use metal or wood. The coating is chosen the same as the roof of the neighboring building

The instructions for making the visor are as follows:

  • The width of the gate is measured, 30 centimeters are added to the obtained value on both sides, which will be the total width of the visor. The distance of the entrance cover, which is required to be covered with a visor, is measured. The height of the device is determined by the dimensions of the garage, taking into account the angle of inclination, which should be approximately 20 °.
  • A sketch of the visor is made and the length of the slope is determined.
  • Rafters are prepared along the length of the slope, wall beam and struts, made of metal or wood. The details are put together. When making a wooden frame, self-tapping screws are used to connect the elements, and welding is used for a metal frame.
  • The frame is attached above the gate. The wall beam is fixed with stainless screws, struts - with anchors.
  • A crate made of edged boards or bars is laid on the rafter system.

Any owner of a garage box was faced with the need to open the gate in the pouring rain, dig them out after a heavy snowfall, and clean up puddles that ran into the inspection hole. A garage with a canopy will help to avoid all the previously listed problems.

The size of the awning or awning is determined by the needs of the car owner:

  • for a garage cooperative, a small visor is enough to close the gate from precipitation;
  • in a private courtyard, you can equip a full-fledged canopy connecting the box with a residential building. You will not run under an umbrella to the car, risking getting your feet wet and catching a cold.

In each case, provide for the possibility of unhindered passage. For street boxing, the problem of passing large vehicles that can break the structure is no less relevant.

Advantages of a canopy near the garage

In addition to protecting the gate from precipitation, we list the most important advantages of the visor for the car owner:

  • it is more convenient to change candles, oil, filters when snow does not fall on your head. Do you prefer to carry out minor repairs without contacting the service? and a garage - an ideal auto repair shop;
  • less snow, water, foliage from trees both in the yard and by car. No need to spend time cleaning up small debris;
  • after repair or inspection of the car under the awning, it is pleasant to relax without going out under the rays of the scorching sun;
  • the tent visor in the presence of slats will not allow the gate to slam shut in very strong winds;
  • a canopy in front of the garage contributes to the creation of a unified architectural and landscape solution for the yard and adjacent territory;
  • in the yard you need a spotlight or lamps. A canopy over the garage will not allow water to enter the electrical part. Reduces the risk of short circuits and failure of household appliances.

The choice of material for the canopy

When choosing a material, consider your own preferences, the possibility of docking with the roof of a house or garage, the performance of materials, their advantages and disadvantages:

  • corrugated board: it is better to use it for a small visor directly in front of the garage. The yard under a solid corrugated awning will be too dark. This applies to ondulin, metal tiles and slate. At the same time, the materials are resistant to moisture, mechanical shocks, they do not require additional anti-corrosion treatment. For fastening to the logs and the frame, slate nails or self-tapping screws, anchor bolts are used. The color is matched to the tone of the house, making the awning for the terrace or canopy an extension of the roof;
  • glass: mineral or ordinary. Do-it-yourself awning over a glass garage is better not to do. Material skips sunlight but too fragile. Standard glass will break when heavy snowfall or falling branches from a tree. The exception is special tempered glass. In work, glass requires special care when attaching to the frame.

  • cellular polycarbonate. It consists of layers of thin vitreous material, interconnected by special bridges. Unlike standard glass, it bends, taking a given shape. Withstands temperatures within -70 +100 degrees Celsius without loss of performance and damage internal structure. When falling leaves, small branches, scratches and cracks will not appear. Care consists in clearing snow in winter and small debris in summer.

Which polycarbonate is better for a veranda? Cellular polycarbonate transmits sunlight well, is available in a wide color scheme. There are no particular problems in choosing an option to match the roof of a house or a box. Monolithic polycarbonate has no internal voids. Looks like glass, but has better technical specifications resistant to mechanical shocks.

When choosing a material, consider the intended shape of the canopy. Ondulin or metal tiles cannot be bent in the form of a dome. Slate is only suitable for a single or double visor. Cellular polycarbonate without any problems takes any given shape within reasonable limits. It is cut, assembling into complex geometric shapes.

Varieties of visors

By the type of fastening, the visors are made hinged and supporting. In the first case, the entire structure is attached to the wall of the house. The larger the overhang, the more massive stops will have to be done. The second option involves the presence of additional supports. In this case, the load on the wall and load-bearing structures of the house is reduced, and the dimensions of the structure are significantly increased. The only negative is that the poles in the yard reduce the room for maneuver. For a garage cooperative, this option is not acceptable, since the supports will interfere with the movement of cars.

The canopy in front of the garage can be made single-sided or double-sided, arched, in the form of a hemisphere. To protect against side wind, additional panels are installed across the entire width of the visor.

Particular attention must be paid to the frame. Assemble the structure yourself, using a rod or circle with a diameter of 8-12 mm, a profile or standard pipe, if you have welding experience. Do you have a sheet bender or a welding machine at hand? Are you unsure of your own design and engineering abilities? Contact a professional to make the frame. Especially if you want to get not just a rough visor that does not allow water to get on the door lock, but also worry about the aesthetic component of the project. canopy large sizes, completely covering the yard or local area, it is better to collect on the spot. A small frame must be welded or forged in advance and installed in finished form. In each case, it is better to work with an assistant in order to avoid distortions.

Tools needed for the job

Are you going to install? Prepare tools and materials:

  • plumb line, tape measure, marker for marks on the wall;
  • a grinder for cutting metal with an appropriate set of discs, metal shears, drills, a screwdriver (for self assembly frame);
  • perforator;
  • self-tapping screws, anchor bolts.

The type of fasteners depends on the material that the homeowner has chosen: it can be a prefabricated frame or individual blanks for assembly on site. In the latter case, a welding machine is needed.

Work order

If the canopy device involves the presence of additional supports, you need to start with them. Under columnar foundation pits are prepared up to 60-70 cm deep. The bottom is covered with sand, then with gravel. Each layer is carefully compacted. The concrete mix is poured on top.

The support columns are installed vertically before the concrete has fully cured. Check the posts for deviations from the vertical. Install temporary supports to be sure. It is possible to give a load on the supports only after the concrete has completely solidified and the foundation has set. Otherwise, distortions are inevitable.

While the concrete hardens, proceed to work on the garage door. The specifics of the work differ due to the characteristics of the selected type of awning, but the initial steps are the same for everyone:

  • the upper attachment point of the visor is marked. If there is a long distance from the highest point of the gate to the continuation of the roof, the protective effect will be reduced to a minimum. Too low a frame will interfere with the opening of the gate. Keep in mind that the visor should have a slope of 15 degrees so that in winter the first snowfall does not cause a collapse:
  • extreme lateral points are outlined. They should go 30-35 cm outside the gate;
  • the distances between the marked points are measured, a frame is prepared according to them. Wood as a basis is better not to take. It is subject to decay, less durable in conditions of constant adverse external influences;
  • for a canopy with a reach of 100 cm, side stops are installed outside the garage doors;
  • the finished frame is attached to the wall anchor bolts. For reliability, pre-drilling is carried out at the attachment points. Dowels are filled with concrete mixture, sealant or special glue. Depending on the width of the visor and the material used, a crate is made, preferably metal.

A polycarbonate gable attached to a garage has some advantages over a single-slope or domed canopy. Snow or water will not accumulate in front of the gate. On slopes and gutters, they will go to the sides.

Alteration of a canopy into a garage

You initially provided for an awning in the yard, but decided to convert it into a garage? The light version without a foundation involves installation between the supporting pillars of horizontal rails. The lower one is at ground level, the upper one is under the roof.

Depending on the width of the profiled sheet or metal tile, vertical guide battens are added. Sheets of wall material are overlapped to them to avoid leaks. The joints in the corners are carefully sealed. The doors are made from the same sheets and are hinged to the front support posts. Pour the floor with concrete mix, if this has not been done before, lay it with tiles, having previously completed the waterproofing.

Do you want to equip a canopy in the yard for a car or personal pastime? Approach the issue creatively. Initially draw a project that takes into account the placement of all buildings, the general architectural solution. Contact a professional designer, and your local area will look stylish and well-groomed.

After repairing the roof of the garage, the customer contacted us again to protect the gate from precipitation. The canopy above the entrance to the garage protects the driver from getting wet in bad weather, when opening or closing the gate, it protects the lock from moisture getting into it. With a sharp change from rain to snow and a drop in temperature, the water that has entered the castle begins to turn into ice, which leads to a problematic opening of the garage - the castle will need to be warmed up, and this will take time and effort.

The canopy for the garage is a fairly compact structure. It can be made by hand in a relatively short period of time. And even the simplest canopy design can extend the life of the garage door.

For the manufacture of the visor, we used a metal profiled pipe 40 * 20 * 2.

The visor hangs over the gate by 1 meter, the slope was made not large at the request of the customer and it amounted to about 10 degrees.

Tip: When installing a visor, its overhang above the garage door should not be less than 600 millimeters, and it should adjoin the garage for its entire width.

After installation, the visor should:

  • Be high strength and wind resistance.
  • Withstand prolonged snow loads.
  • Clearly fit into the style of nearby buildings. The garage visor is also a design element.

The instructions for making the visor are as follows:

  • The width of the gate is measured, 30 centimeters are added to the obtained value on both sides, which will be the total width of the visor. The distance of the entrance cover, which is required to be covered with a visor, is measured. The height of the device is determined by the dimensions of the garage, taking into account the angle of inclination, which should be approximately 20° (depending on the object).
  • A sketch of the visor is made and the length of the slope is determined.
  • Braces (corners) are prepared along the length of the slope. Made from metal or wood. The details are put together. When making a wooden frame, self-tapping screws are used to connect the elements, and welding is used for a metal frame (as in our situation).
  • Struts (corners) is attached above the gate. Fixed with anchors.
  • A crate is laid, made of edged boards or metal (as in our case).
  • Roofing is laid on the crate and fixed. The method of fastening the elements depends on the type of material used, it can be corrugated board, metal tiles, polycarbonate, slate, etc.

At the request of the customer, a gutter with a slight slope is mounted to drain water.

The canopy above the garage will protect the entrance gate from the destructive effects of rain, snow, hot sun, and thereby increase the service life. The canopy will also provide water drainage - it will prevent corrosion of the external lock and freezing of ice on the threshold.

Polycarbonate products are especially popular. As you can see in the photo, it can be a small canopy over the entrance, and a large carport, under which several cars can fit. The polycarbonate roof installed in front of the garage can be of any size and shape, thanks to unique properties polymer plastic.

The most common garage shed is an arched deck supported by four or six pillars. The frame of this design is made of a metal profile, on which plastic panels are attached using thermal washers. It is quite possible to install such a polycarbonate canopy with your own hands; this will require a minimum set of tools.

Material properties

Polycarbonate has a number of properties that make it possible to design large-scale and rather geometrically complex structures. This polymeric material, having a cellular or monolithic structure, is very light and yet flexible. Sheds in front of the garage with a polycarbonate coating not only successfully perform a protective function, but are also a decorative element that fits perfectly into the design of the site.

Working with plastic does not require professional skills and expensive equipment, but nevertheless, following some simple rules is necessary so that the visor can perform its protective and decorative functions for as long as possible.

Polycarbonate installation rules - how not to spoil the material

  1. When installing the visor, it is necessary to take into account the thermal expansion of the material and fasten the sheets over the garage doors not close to each other, but on short distance in 3 - 5 mm;
  2. From right choice panel thickness depends on the performance of the canopy. Too thin a sheet deforms under the weight of snow, too thick - it will make the structure heavier and entail unjustified costs;
  3. The edges of the panels must be closed with a special profile. This is especially important for cellular polycarbonate. Debris gets into open cells, which significantly reduces the light transmission of the roof and spoils it appearance. Water, getting inside the sheet, freezes and tears the material;
  4. Incorrect orientation of the panels during installation will lead to stagnant water and damage to the visor;
  5. The bending of the sheet when roofing a garage with a canopy should not exceed the allowable values and must be performed only across the direction of the cells. Failure to comply with this rule may result in a rupture of the flooring.
