TAX FREE in theory
TAX FREE in practice

Having traveled half the world and emptying the shelves of many stores, we have never used the Tax Free service. The refund procedure has always seemed to us tense and burdensome. But this time we decided to try. I share my Austrian experience.

TAX FREE in theory

First stage. By purchasing a product (one unit) worth more than 75.01 euros, you get the opportunity to return the amount of tax paid. The main thing - do not forget to properly complete the documents in the store. Official sources write that goods purchased in the EU cannot be used, otherwise you will lose the right to a tax refund.

Second phase. When departing from the airport building at the customs point, you must present your passport and documents in an envelope, asking for a stamp. You need to be prepared for the fact that you will be asked to present the goods in packaging and with labels.

Third stage. Following the instructions on the envelope, send the documents sealed at customs to the Global Blue office and wait for the money to be transferred to the card if you paid by card, or send a check if you paid in cash.

TAX FREE in practice

We knew that we couldn't use the things we bought, but it was hard to refuse a child's desire to ride in a new helmet and new gloves. So they took the risk and took it.

In fact, everything turns out to be much easier if you try to return the money while in Austria.

Before making a purchase, we always checked whether they would give us this very form. If yes, then buy

The first stage remains unchanged, everything needs to be controlled. And this means that you must:

1) Check that you are given a receipt for the goods. Very important: for one product, ONE, not two checks. In front of my eyes, with a correctly filled out form and the presence of all stamps, the girl was not returned the money, because the store made a mistake with the price and finished off her lack with a separate check. If you buy several items, then the check can be one, but the price of each individual item must be higher than 75.01 euros.

2) The store must give you a TAX FREE form specially filled out with a wet stamp, which will indicate the purchase price and the amount of the refund. For your part, you will enter your data in it: last name, first name, address and sign. We did not fill out the form (and this was another long check) in the store, but already filled it out at customs.

TAX FREE discount system in the Czech Republic

3) The check and the Tax Free form are cleaved with a stapler and placed in a special envelope.

A bank that refunds taxes 🙂

Do not be alarmed if the store starts cutting off all the labels in front of you. You can safely use the purchased goods in Austria, you will not lose the right to a tax refund, checked!

The second and third stages need to be done quickly at the airport before check-in to avoid queues. Right at the entrance to the Salzburg airport building, there will be a small room to the right where special people who act as customs officers sit - put a stamp here (second stage). Purchased goods can not be shown (checked)

You queue for registration and, while your fellow travelers torment the accompanying guide where to go with their Tax Free documents, you rush at full speed along the check-in counters to the bank with an inconspicuous blue sign Tax Free Refunds (see photo). Here you give Madame in the window all the documents + credit card (if you made purchases with a card). In return, you get money - about 11% of the amount of purchases. All!!! Now quickly, quickly to check-in 🙂 and on the plane. If you do everything quickly, you will still have time to spend a "fresh penny" in Duty Free stores 🙂

P.S. total cost our holiday in Austria (tour package, skipasses, food on the mountain, souvenirs) was 1200 € per person

Very short history

The modern image of the Prague airport was laid down in the conditions of a socialist planned economy in the 60s of the last century. Even then, the hated communists foresaw a significant increase in passenger traffic in the skies of Czechoslovakia. In the 70s general plan construction of a parallel runway was introduced.

In the 90s, this idea came to life. The construction of the second runway allowed the Prague airport to break out and become the leader in the air transportation industry and transport a record 12.6 million passengers in 2008!

One of the historical milestones of the airport is the first arrival Soviet aircraft TU-144. During the three days the aircraft was in Prague, 300,000 people came to see it.

How to use Prague Airport

Reception of passengers in Ruzyn is carried out at the following terminals.

  • Terminal 1 designed for air communication with countries outside the Schengen area.
  • Terminal 2 works with flights within Schengen. There is no such formality as the mandatory check of travelers' passports. But do not relax, your documents and luggage for inspection can be asked at any time, random checks are not uncommon in this memte.
  • Terminal 3 serves private aircraft, it is somewhat away from the first and second, having no common communication with them.

There are huge information boards in the arrivals and departures halls. And a few hours before the departure or arrival of the desired aircraft, you can look at the website of Prague Airport. On it you can see the schedule and the expected time of departure or arrival of the aircraft or the cancellation of the flight.

Public transport in Prague works very well, so leave from Ruzyne airport to the center of Prague you can not only by taxi or by pre-booking transfer from a company specializing in this, but also on a regular city bus or express. The bus will take you to one of the Prague metro stations. No more than an hour is quite realistic to get to the center. During business hours it will be even faster.

The principle of operation of car parks at Ruzynė Airport

Two express parking lots, and in fact the boarding and disembarking of passengers, near terminals P1 and P2 are served free of charge, but not more than 15 minutes. Only one such free entry can be made to both of these areas of the airport per hour. At the entrance, you must take a parking card in front of the entrance barrier by pressing the button in the machine.

If you miss the free 15 minutes, pay at the machines located in front of the exit barriers and in the airport hall 100 kroons for every 30 minutes of parking.

There is another option to leave the car for a long time. Parking lot D is designed for this, which is located 8-10 minutes walk from the first terminal of the airport. How longer term where you leave your car, the lower the price. A week will cost 900 kroons, a month 2050 kroons. There is a discount for online booking and payment.

Guarded parking C will cost 650 kroons per day, and if you pay online 618 kroons.

The list of stores in the capital that are included in Global Blue can be viewed on their website, but Premier Tax Free cannot boast of such a convenient service - there is only a general catalog of brands (you need to select a brand to see if it is represented in Prague).

Detailed information about tax-free return points in the Czech Republic (Prague, Karlovy Vary, Brno and Pardubice) can be found here: Global Blue and Premier Tax Free. Of course, only those that are after customs clearance, that is, at airports, are available to tourists. As an example, we will dwell on the most used option, which is Prague Airport ().

Taxi-free return at Prague airport

Taxi-free return at Prague Airport is carried out at terminal No. 1. The dimensions of the terminal are relatively small, so all the necessary points are nearby. Fortunately, there are enough pointers, and it will not be difficult to figure it out. You can see a detailed diagram of terminal No. 1, and a simplified plan is a little lower.

Main detail when returning tax-free - you must show the purchased goods at customs, and sometimes also at the point of issue of money, so either do not check in your luggage until you have issued a refund, or leave the tax-free goods as hand luggage. Depending on which option you choose, the sequence of going through customs, checking in, checking in luggage and getting tax free will be slightly different.

Tax-free refund for goods that are checked in to the baggage compartment:

  1. check-in (but you don’t check in your luggage and don’t wrap it in a film);
  2. customs (letter "C" on the map);
  3. tax-free return point (letters "R2", "R3", "R4", "R5" on the map);
  4. baggage check-in (you will have to queue up for check-in again);
  5. passport (border) control.

Tax-free refund for items left as hand luggage:

  1. check-in and baggage check-in;
  2. customs (letter "C" on the map);
  3. passport (border) control;
  4. tax-free return point (letter "R1" on the map).

When you receive money at the return point, be sure to find out the conversion rate. As a rule, it is most profitable to take crowns; then euro. The most "predatory" commission is for dollars. Crowns can be spent immediately in Duty Free.

- group tour (up to 10 people) for the first acquaintance with the city and the main attractions - 3 hours, 20 euros

- a walk through the little-known, but interesting corners of Prague away from tourist routes to feel the real spirit of the city - 4 hours, 30 euros

- bus tour for those who want to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the Czech Middle Ages - 8 hours, 30 euros

The tax system of the European Union allows you to return part of the purchase price - value added tax (VAT). Let's figure out how to make a VAT refund and arrange tax free in Prague.

COUNTRIES WHERE TAX FREE IS OPERATING

Tax free is a special document that is issued when buying a product. Subsequently, it can be used for a VAT refund.

This system applies to all major cities European Union (as well as in certain Asian and Latin countries), including in Prague. In these states, VAT must be paid only by their citizens or foreigners living there for more than 6 months.

Who is entitled to tax free purchases and for what amount. VAT rate

The service can be used by foreign citizens who have been in Prague for less than six months and who have made a purchase in the amount of more than 2,000 kroons.

Groups of people who are not eligible for the VAT refund program:

  • foreigners who are in the country on a work visa;
  • foreigners with a residence permit of the country where the purchase is made;
  • when buying in the EU countries - citizens of countries that are members of the EU;

NB! The tax is non-refundable after 3 months from the date of purchase.

Goods purchased for personal use and transported in one's own luggage are subject to tax refund.

The VAT rate in Prague is not always the same:

The exact amount of the rate can be seen on the check, where VAT is usually indicated in a separate column.

The tax free system in Prague does NOT apply to the following goods:

  • services sector;
  • food and alcohol;
  • fuel;
  • weapon;
  • means of transport;
  • goods of online stores.

It is impossible to return the full amount of tax in Prague, since an administrative fee (5-7%) is charged during the transaction. In addition, issuing companies also take a small percentage for their work. Therefore, the final amount received will be 14-16% of the total VAT.

How to get tax free in the Czech Republic: general information

In Prague, you can issue the relevant documents only in stores operating in the Tax Free system. They can be distinguished by a sticker pasted at the entrance with the appropriate inscription. However, even if there is no sticker, you should always ask sellers about it.

There are several VAT refund schemes. Therefore, when buying and issuing a check, it is better to take a booklet with instructions and addresses of tax free sales outlets. Or ask the seller how to get tax free in Prague if he speaks Russian or English.

VAT can only be refunded on brand new, unused items. Therefore, in order for the tax refund to pass without complications, it is imperative to keep all receipts, do not tear off the tags and do not unpack the goods.

COMPLETE GUIDE

Two large issuing companies work with tax free in Prague - Global Blue Premier Tax Free and Premier Tax Free. Their offices are both in the city itself and at the airport.

There are several options for returning tax free in Prague:

  • at the place of purchase;
  • in the office of the intermediary company;
  • in the airoport;
  • upon returning to their country.

How to fill out the tax free form

Tax free forms are provided to the buyer at the checkout. They come in several varieties and are usually already partially filled with the store.

The buyer must fill in empty columns himself in printed Latin. If there are difficulties with this, it is better to ask the seller for help. Everything must be executed correctly, because if you register a tax free in Prague with errors, then the buyer will be denied a VAT refund.

The standard form, as a rule, contains the following information: full name, address of residence, number of an identity document, E-mail, bank card number, personal signature.

What to do with the tax free form at customs

Regardless of how and where the tax free will be cashed - on the spot in Prague or upon return - the documents in any case must be properly processed at customs.

To do this, customs officers need to present their purchases, checks for them and correctly completed tax free forms.

Goods subject to VAT refunds must be readily and directly accessible. That is, things should not be in a suitcase packed in a film, and should not be folded to its very bottom.

When reconciling the check and the form, the customs officer may ask to present the goods “in person”. A prerequisite is the full compliance of goods and checks. Also, do not forget about the presence of labels and packaging.

After comparing the goods and inspecting the integrity of the packaging:

  • checks are stamped,
  • tax free documents officially become valid.

Tax free in Prague can be returned right at the place of purchase, if the store provides for it. To do this, you must show your passport with a visa at the checkout. Then the tax amount will not be taken into account when paying, or will immediately be returned to the card.

However, even with this method of VAT refund, you still have to fill out the form, seal the checks at customs and send it all to the issuing company.

At Prague Airport

You can get the tax amount directly at the Vaclav Havel Prague Airport in the 1st or 2nd terminals. The point of the issuing company is easy to find by the relevant signs.

Action algorithm:

  1. Arrive at least 1 hour before the planned check-in for the flight - there are usually long queues near the Tax Free counters.
  2. Pass customs inspection and receive a receipt with stamps - for this, things must be on the surface and presented upon request;
  3. Check in for a flight and get into the Duty Free zone. The tax refund point is located near the currency exchange point. To receive money, you must present a passport, a check and a form with a stamp previously placed at the customs control point.

Next, the tax free form and checks are folded into an envelope and handed over to an employee of the intermediary company or dropped into a special box at the counter. After that, the amount of VAT will be transferred to the card. For the issuance of cash, the company may charge an additional fee.

The envelope must reach the company's office within 21-30 days from the date the payment was transferred to the buyer. Otherwise, this amount will be blocked on the card.

Unfortunately, there are failures in this system, and the envelope is sometimes lost along the way. Therefore, just in case, it is better to have copies of all documents on hand.
