Ping is the time it takes to send information to the server and back (time is measured in milliseconds). The higher the ping, the slower the exchange of information. If your ping is high, you can try to reduce it.

With normal web surfing, you may not notice the difference between ping 40 and 140. But this difference is clearly noticeable in online games, especially shooters and races, where there is a lot of dynamics.

Gamers, people with bad ping are called laggers, they move in jerks, disappear and appear suddenly, thus interfering with the normal game. Most often, it is for online games that they try to reduce ping by all means.

Reasons for high ping

  • A large ping in the game can be caused by a busy communication channel. For example, because you download some files;
  • Also, a large ping can be caused by overloading the router;
  • The third reason is server overload;

How to reduce ping

In order to reduce the ping we need to delve into the registry. To do this, click Start - run and enter the regedit command there, after which we will go to the registry, and after that we move along the branches - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows and NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile. After double-clicking on NetworkThrottlingIndex, there will be “a” (hexadecimal), and we need to select ffffffff and click OK.

This method does not give a hundred percent guarantee that the ping will decrease. But it's worth a try.

If the ping remains the same, or multimedia applications become worse, replace "ffffffff" back with "a".

Question from user

Hello.

Tell me, how can I lower the high ping in the game World of Warcraft? When you just run and kill mobs, everything is fine, but when you start fighting with other people, the game takes a long time to respond to my clicks. Ping ranges from 200 to 300 ms.

I tried to clean Windows, optimize, but it still did not help. Can anything else be done?

All the best!

In general, this is just one question out of dozens. All users who play online games: tanks, WOW, Counter-Strike, etc., I think that more than once or twice they encountered lags and delays (that is, the ping became very high) during the game.

In this article I will give the main points on what ping depends on, how to find it out, and how you can lower it. So...

How to know your ping

To begin with, so that everyone understands everything correctly, I will give my definition of ping (simple and concise ☺) ...

ping is the time taken to send a "piece" of data from your computer to another, and receive a response from it. To exaggerate completely: if you ask a question to a person and get an answer from him - then the time from the beginning of the question to the end of the answer to it - this will be the ping.

Ping is measured, usually in milliseconds (ms or ms). Games often write in English: Latency or Ping.

Of course, the higher the ping, the worse it is for you: your reaction in the game will leave the best, until you press the button and it works, a significant amount of time will pass, which means that you can simply win for it. Especially, this is noticeable in active games where a good response is needed.

A few words about how to find out ping

Ping is a variable in real time, and besides, it will be different for different servers. Those. ping to one server can be 100ms, and to another 500ms. Most often, you need to know the ping to one or two servers. It is unlikely that you are interested in this value to all servers without exception ...

To find out the ping - you need the server's IP address (or its domain name, for example, website).

Then you need to open the command line: press the key combination Win + R, type CMD and press Enter.

Other ways to open command prompt in different Windows OS -

  1. ping site- 4 packets will be sent, for which the average response time in ms is determined (see the screenshot below);
  2. ping 176.114.4.148- similar to the previous command, only the address is specified as an IP address.

As for the games themselves, in most online games the ping is shown in the game itself (sorry for the tautology).

For example, in WOW, to find out your ping, just hover your mouse over the computer icon (by the way, its color may be different: green - everything is in order, yellow - there is a delay, red - it will be difficult or impossible to play). On the screen below, the delay is 132 ms (if you have an English version, then see Latency).

If we are talking about Counter-Strike, then the ping is generally shown both when connecting to the server, and directly in the game itself. In general, I do not see any difficulties with its definition here ...

How to reduce ping - what to look for!

1) Internet provider, type of connection

Of great importance for the quality of the Internet connection (including ping) is your Internet provider. It happens that your neighbor's ping is ten times lower on the same server that you play on - and the difference is only in the service provider. Therefore, the first advice - try to ask your acquaintances, friends, neighbors - if they have a similar problem, maybe even try to launch the desired game on their PC and compare the delays. Next, make a decision to change the provider.

By the way, I personally know that a couple of guys I know "sit" on more expensive tariffs from not the most popular Internet providers just for the sake of a good connection with several game servers.

Also great importance may have the form of a connection: let's say a 3G modem will lose in ping to a regular wired (fiber) Internet connection (which, in my humble opinion, provides the best performance in terms of ping today).

If you have a router installed, then keep in mind that some inexpensive models may not be able to cope with your network load and slow down (this will also affect delays and lags in games) ... In this case, we can recommend disconnecting the router and connecting network cable directly to the PC network card and check how the game will go.

2) Remoteness of the server with the game

Second and also very important point- where is the server with the game: in your local network, in your city, in your country, or even abroad? As a rule, the further the server is, the higher the ping will be (but this rule does not always work).

Of course, I understand that there is not always a desire to change the game server (especially when friends appeared, communication began), but still - sometimes by changing the server, ping can be reduced significantly! You can switch to another server to play with the whole clan at once (especially if you are all from the same city...).

3) Connection speed, tariff

There is such a myth - that the higher the connection speed - the lower the ping! Actually it's not like that...

If the speed of the Internet connection is not enough to transfer data between you and the game server, then there will also be brakes in the game, delays, etc. But they are not directly related to ping - hence the confusion.

At all, speed- this is a parameter that determines how long you can get the requested data (measured in MB / s). ping same - this is the time spent on the response of the server, i.e. the lower the ping, the faster the download will start, but the download time will depend on the speed.

In general, the message of this part of the article is to find out what speed should be for a comfortable game, and then check your connection speed ( real, and not the one that you have specified in the contract with the Internet provider).

How to know your real speed internet connections -

4) Internet channel congestion

If you download something in parallel with the game, then the ping can drop noticeably. Many, by the way, do not even realize that their Windows system can download updates, uTorrent distributes files, and sometimes other users also download them from you, also look at other PCs / laptops (if you have several machines connected to the Internet), etc. .

How to disable updates in Windows -

To check which applications are loading the network - open the task manager (key combination Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and look at the "network" column (sort the load by it).

Important! It is possible that specifically in your apartment there will be no extraneous load on the network - but your provider's Internet channel will be loaded with other users (you are not alone in the house and area ☺). This is especially noticeable in the evening hours, when everyone is at home and the load on the network increases. Recommendations regarding the Internet provider are appropriate here (see paragraph 1 above).

5) Problem with the driver for the network card

Drivers can be of great importance for the operation of the network adapter (in principle, as well as for any other equipment). For example, on my work laptop, after I took down the drivers installed by Windows by default and installed from the device manufacturer's website - wifi speed connection increased by 1.5 times!

In general, the topic with drivers is quite extensive, below I will give a couple of links to articles from which you will learn how to find drivers correctly and how to update them.

How to install, update or remove the driver for the network adapter (for example, Wi-Fi (wireless network adapter)) -

The best software to automatically update drivers -

6) Is the computer loaded at 100% with extraneous tasks?

Perhaps your online game slows down not because of ping, but due to the fact that, for example, a high load on the processor and it simply does not have time, freezes. This can also be observed with a high load on the hard drive, RAM. I analyzed all this in detail in an article about computer brakes, and I recommend that you familiarize yourself with it for diagnosing and optimizing the operation of your Windows OS.

Why does the computer slow down, how can I speed it up -

7) Package Scheduler Setting (Windows Tweaking - 1)

The QoS packet scheduler (or QoS packet manager) by default reserves a certain share of the Internet channel for updates operating system, sending statistics, Email etc. Sometimes this reservation reaches 10-20% of the channel capacity, what do you agree, not a little?! Therefore, it is logical that it must be disabled ...

How to do it:

  1. go to the local group policy editor (click Win+R, enter gpedit.msc in the "Open" line and press Enter);
  2. then open the section: Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Network/QoS Packet Scheduler (or QoS package manager)
  3. then move the slider to the "Enabled" position and set the value to "0". Save your settings and restart your PC.

Note: not every version of Windows can open the Group Policy Editor settings (in the initial and home versions - this option is disabled).

8) Installing the Leatrix Latency Fix script (Windows fine-tuning - 2)

This is a script (by the way, it was written by a fan World games of Warcraft) is designed to remove the delay in the response of the system to the processing of packets (in Windows, this does not work by default!). As a result, the confirmation is sent immediately, which reduces the delay somewhat.

By the way, this can be done without special scripts - but you will have to rummage through the registry for a long time (which not everyone can do). And such a program works in auto-mode, it is easy to use, no installation is required. What else is needed? ☺

After downloading the script, extract the archive and run the executable file (requires administrator rights).

  1. offer to install Install) - install and restart the computer;
  2. suggestion to remove Remove) - if so, better not touch it, then the changes have already been made to the registry (by clicking on Remove- you will return the settings to their original state).

9) Firewall and antiviruses

Another point that I would like to focus on is the work of an antivirus and a firewall (often they are combined into one protective program called an antivirus). By default, the firewall is suspicious of unfamiliar programs and, by default, asks you whether to give access to the network to a particular program.

All these checks often affect how games work. I recommend: either add the game to the list of trusted applications, or turn off the firewall (and antivirus) for the duration of the game. Fortunately, many modern antiviruses already have a game mode ...

How to prevent any program from accessing the Internet -

10) Installing spec. utilities that increase the priority of games

And finally, now there are quite a few utilities that can set the maximum priority for the game (during its launch), free up RAM, close unnecessary processes - in this way, all PC resources will be used for the game (and not for extraneous tasks). Thanks to this, it is possible not only to reduce a few pings, but also to speed up the game itself.

Game acceleration: best programs and utilities -

I hope that after taking a set of measures, your ping will become lower.

That's all for me, good luck everyone!

Good hour!

I think many users, especially amateurs computer games over the network (WOT, Counter Strike 1.6, WOW, etc.), noticed that sometimes the connection leaves much to be desired: the response of the characters in the game is delayed after you press the buttons; the picture on the screen may twitch; sometimes the game is interrupted, causing an error. By the way, this can also be observed in some programs, but in them it does not interfere so much.

Experienced users say that this happens because of the high ping (Ping). In this article, we will dwell on this in more detail, on the most FAQ associated with ping.

1. What is ping?

I will try to explain in my own words, as I understand it ...

When you run a network program, it sends pieces of information (let's call them packets) to other computers that are also connected to the Internet. The time it takes for this one piece of information (packet) to reach another computer and your PC will receive a response from it - and is called ping.

In fact, there is a little wrong and not in such words, but in this formulation it is very easy to understand the essence.

Those. how the lower your ping the better. When you have a high ping - the game (program) starts to slow down, you do not have time to give commands in time, you do not have time to respond in time, etc.

2. What does ping depend on (including in games)?

1) Some people think that ping depends on internet speed.

Yes and no. Indeed, if the speed of your Internet channel is not enough for a particular game, it will slow down for you, the necessary packets will arrive with a delay.

In general, if there is plenty of Internet speed, then for ping it does not matter if you have 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps Internet.

Moreover, he himself was a repeated witness when different internet providers in the same city, in the same house and entrance, there were completely different pings, which differed by an order of magnitude! And some users (of course, mostly players), spitting on the speed of the Internet, switched to another Internet provider, just because of the ping. So the stability and quality of communication will be more important than speed ...

2) From the Internet provider - a lot depends on it in general (see just above).

3) From the remoteness of the server.

Let's assume that the game server is located on your local network. Then the ping to it will be, perhaps, less than 5 ms (that's 0.005 seconds)! It is very fast and allows you to play all games and use any programs.

And take a server located overseas with a ping of 300 ms. Almost a third of a second, such a ping will allow you to play, except perhaps in some types of strategies (for example, turn-based, where high speed response).

4) From the congestion of your Internet channel.

Often on your PC, in addition to the game, there are other network programs, which at some point can significantly load both your network and your computer. In addition, do not forget that you are not alone in the entrance (in the house) using the Internet, and it is possible that the channel is simply overloaded.

3. How to measure (find out) your ping?

There are several ways. I will give the most popular of them.

1) Command line

This method is convenient to use when you know, for example, the IP server and want to know what ping is from your computer before it. The method is widely used for a variety of purposes (for example, when setting up a network) ...

The first step, of course, is to open command line(in Windows 2000, XP, 7 - this can be done through the "START" menu. In Windows 7, 8, 10 - press the Win + R button combination, then write CMD in the window that opens and press Enter).

In the command line, write Ping and enter the IP address or domain name, to which we will measure the ping, and press Enter. Here are a couple of examples of how you can check the ping:

Ping ya.ru

Ping 213.180.204.3

Average ping: 25ms

As you can see, the average ping time to Yandex from my computer is 25 ms. By the way, if such a ping is in games, then you will play quite comfortably and may never be interested in ping.

2) Spec. services on the internet

There are dozens of special sites (services) on the Internet that can measure the speed of your Internet connection (for example, download speed, upload speed, as well as ping).

The best services for checking the Internet (including ping):

One of the famous sites for checking the quality of the Internet - Speedtest.net. I recommend to use, a screenshot with an example is presented below.

Test example: ping 2 ms…

3) View properties in the game itself

Also, ping can be found directly in the game itself. Most games already have built-in tools to check the quality of the connection.

For example, in WOW ping is shown in a small separate window (see Latency).

193ms is too high a ping, even for WOW, and in games like shooters like CS 1.6 you won't be able to play at all!

Ping in WoW.

The second example is the popular shooter Counter Strike: next to the statistics (points, how many killed, etc.) there is a column of Latency and a number in front of each player - this is ping! In general, in games of this kind, even the slightest advantage in ping can give tangible benefits!

4. How to lower ping?

Is it real? 😛

In general, on the Internet, there are many ways to reduce ping: change something in the registry, change game files, edit something there, etc. But to be honest, some of them work, God forbid 1-2%, at least at one time (7-8 years) ago, I just didn’t try something ... Of all the effective ones, I’ll give a few.

1) Try to play on another server. It is quite possible that on another server your ping will decrease several times! But this option is not always suitable.

2) Change your ISP. This is the strongest way! Especially if you know who to go to: you probably have acquaintances, neighbors, friends, you can ask if everyone has such a high ping, test the work of the necessary programs with them and go already with the knowledge of all the questions ...

3) Try to clean the computer: ; ; , ; try . Often games slow down not only because of the ping.

4) If there is not enough speed of the Internet channel, connect to a higher speed tariff.

All the best!

Let's start with the fact that it is desirable to first check the parameters of the Internet connection.

This is done as follows:

1 Go to "A computer" and right-click on the drive with the most information.

2 In the drop-down menu, select the item "Properties".

3 The properties window will open. In it, go to the tab "Service" and in block "Disk Defragmenter" click on the button "Perform defragmentation".

4 In the next defrag window, just click again "Disk Defragmenter", after selecting the required one in the block under the inscription "Current state".

5 After that, follow the instructions and just wait for the process to finish.

Note: If in the block under the inscription "Current state" next to the selected disk it says “(fragmented: 0%)”, which means that this is not the problem and defragmentation is not necessary at all.

And if that was indeed the problem, We recommend setting up a defragmentation schedule. and so that the system independently performs this process once in a certain period.

To do this, use the corresponding button in the defragmentation window. Thanks to this, you won't come back to this question again.

Driver update

For the operation of the Internet, as you know, the network card is responsible. So, it is advisable to update the drivers for it from time to time. It's done like this:

1 In the menu "Start" enter the query "driver". Among the programs found, run the one called "Updating Device Drivers".

2 Expand the section "Network adapters". Find there the device called "Network Adapter..."

3 Right-click on it and select from the drop-down menu "Update Drivers..."

Tip: Do the same for other devices in the section "Network adapters". Perhaps the problem is in one of them.

Virus check

Therefore, it is best to check your computer for viruses and remove them.

If you have a good anti-virus program installed on your computer, for example, from Kaspersky Lab, run a scan with it.

However, even if you are confident in your antivirus, you can do the same. A list of the best such utilities is presented in. Choose any.

Disabling other programs

Often all sorts of things software also takes over a significant part of the traffic. Thus, it does not allow you to achieve high ping.

That's why it is best to disable a number of programs for the duration of the game, namely:

Most programs can be disabled by simply clicking on the "Exit" button in the context menu of the tray shortcut.

This means that if a program has an icon on the bottom bar of the desktop, it must be right-clicked.

A menu will appear in which you need to click "Exit".

This method, in particular, is suitable for antiviruses.

Many other software samples can be closed in the same way. If this option is not suitable, you will have to use the task manager.

This process as follows:

  • In the same tray, right-click on an empty space and select from the context menu "Start Task Manager". You can also press "Ctrl", "Alt" and "Delete" on the keyboard.
  • In the dispatcher window, go to the "Processes" tab.
  • There, by name, you can easily recognize all the programs. On the one you want to close, just right-click once to highlight.
  • Click on the button "End Process". In the window that appears, click the button with the same name again.

  • Do the same with all software. which needs internet to work.

Changing program priority

In addition to the fact that various programs can be forced to close to unload the operating system, other programs can be put in the first place in the OS priority.

That is, you can make the system pay the most attention to a single process.

Due to this, the most OS resources will be spent on it and, accordingly, .

The priority change is as follows:

1 Launch an online game. Open Task Manager. How to do this is described in the first step of the previous section.

2 On the tab "Applications" right-click on the game and select from the menu that appears "Go to Process". Of course, you can try to find the right process yourself, but it's much easier.

3 On the selected process, right-click again and select the option from the context menu "Priority". To do this, just hover over it.

4 Options will appear on the right, which priority to assign this application. Click "Tall". In the window that appears, click "Change Priority".

5 Close the dispatcher. Wait a while. The priority will not change immediately. But in any case, the ping should go down, as well as the performance. And maybe the graphics will be better.

  • Next, on the left panel, sequentially go to the sections “Computer Configuration” (if in Russian, then “Computer Configuration”), “Administration Templates” (“Administrative Templates”), “Network” (“Network”) and “QoS Packet Scheduler” ("QoS Packet Scheduler").
  • A shortcut will appear on the right "Limit reservable bandwidth"(in Russian "Limit reserved bandwidth").
  • A small window will open. In it, check the box next to the item "Enabled" ("Enabled").
  • In the block below, the inscription "Bandwidth limit (%):" and a field for specifying percentages will become available. The initial setting is 20%. Instead, the value should be set to 0%, as shown in Figure 10.
  • Click Apply, then OK.
    • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Thus, you can significantly increase the bandwidth of your computer.

Good afternoon our dear readers. The topic of our today's article is very specific, as it will not be useful to everyone. But for a general outlook, I still advise you to read it to the end. Today we will talk about reducing the delay in various games, in other words about decreasing ping. For an ordinary user, such information can also be useful in some cases. So do not be lazy and read the article to the end.

For all our readers who love to spend free time online games like WoW, CS or World of Tanks are familiar with the problem of high ping in the game. For those who don't understand what in question, it can be said more simply, no matter how low the ping is, you always want to make it even less. The fact is that the speed of connection to the online game server depends on the ping. The lower the ping, the smoother the game will run.

In scientific terms, ping is the time taken to transfer a packet of information in computer networks from a client to a server and back from a server to a client.

By the way, there is some confusion of terminology here, because this time is not called ping, but lag or, in fact, delay (Eng. Latency - lag; delay, delay, aka lag) and is measured in milliseconds. The lag is related to the speed of the connection and the congestion of the channels all the way from the client to the server. Ping is a little different. But I will not break now the idea of terminology, let it be by tradition - ping so ping.

After reading the article, you will learn how to make a number of changes in the registry that allow, but only in some cases, to reduce ping in many online games and applications that use the TCP protocol during their work, as well as a number of Internet applications and everything connected with it. You can reduce the ping and not by changing the registry settings. All this you will learn in the course of reading the article.

But you must understand that all the methods listed below to reduce ping will not work for everyone and will not always work. This technique depends on many factors, such as Internet provider, throughput channel, type and variety installed games and applications, operating system version, connection type, and many other factors.

In order to long time do not scour the registry in search of the right place and file, so as not to spoil the operation of the system as a whole, smart people made a special script. It will allow you to make all the necessary changes automatically and without special efforts. Even if you are satisfied with the level of your ping and think that it is the most optimal for you, I still recommend using this script, since it cannot harm the system, but it can lower the ping in any case. To be sure that the script is working, you can open it and see it. A knowledgeable user will not only understand exactly how the script works, but will also be able to improve it. Actually, there are quite a lot of such script optimizers. So there is a chance to find not just a script to reduce ping, but also its improved version.

But, as I have already noted above, it is not a fact that even an improved script will work on your computer. Therefore, after this application, the ping may remain the same. But it's definitely worth trying to change it. But if your channel has an average or high bandwidth, then most likely the script will work and the ping will decrease.

Script to reduce ping - how does it work?

The script is used to remove the delay time in Windows for processing packets. Standard settings send notification of packet acceptance only when the segment is fully processed, and not immediately after receiving. After applying the script, notifications about the receipt of the package will be sent immediately after it is received. The script also changes the standard package sizes and everything related to them. The list of all changes will be very large, so there is no point in writing it, and you don’t need extra information, you will only get confused in terms.

All these changes in total lead to the fact that the delay in the response to the transfer and exchange of information between the computer and the server is practically reduced to zero. Ping is reduced, you are happy, toys are flying, you even forget to have lunch.

    ping reduction script

You can download a script to reduce ping from the official site or modified by me to suit the needs of Runet from .

Scripts are supported by all operating systemsWindows 7, Windows 8 and 10, even XP.The bitness of the system also does not matter, 32 (x86) or 64 bits, the script can be installed on any OS.

The first step is to unzip the downloaded files, find the exe file and run it. Before installing, I recommend checking the ping (run CMD as administrator and enter the command there - ping google.ru -l 32 -n 50 ) and create a restore point in case something goes wrong.

A window will appear in which we click "install".

After the program is installed, without fail restart the computer and see the result.

It is possible that the program will not be installed, due to the absence of the .NET Framework. So, we also install the .NET Framework without fail, you can find it in our .

Perhaps you will not achieve the desired result in reducing ping, and you will want to remove this program. To do this, you need to run the exe file and click on "remove".

It is possible that during installation, not the "install" button, but "remove" immediately awaits you, but you did not install any such programs. This indicates that your system is already set up for optimization. Therefore, you don’t have to install the program, and you need to try to change the high ping in other ways. But I would not advise doing this, since proper optimization has already been done.

Lowering ping technically and is it realistic?

And for those "specialists" who claim that no scripts can reduce ping or for those unbelievers, I will talk about how ping, lags and response delay are formed, so that you finally understand how this whole thing works.

Before I start talking about general principles work, let's agree with you that I will designate "ping, lag and delay" in one word. That is, when I write one of these three words, then I mean two other terms. After all, as I have already mentioned in at the beginning of the article, all these three terms have one general meaning, namely the time spent on the transmission of a packet of information in computer networks from the client to the server and vice versa, from the server to the client.

Some people think that the lag, which is ping, is one "action" that somehow happens. In fact, the lag is formed from several parts. Three, to be exact. The lag consists of client, intermediate and server.

Now let's analyze each stage of formation:

The client lag, which is also local, is formed on the user's side and has the following structure:

    1. to the client computer receives the packet
    2. handles
    3. replies that he received it
    4. sends a response packet
    5. waiting for a response about receiving a response packet.

All the time that is spent on the above actions is called the client lag.

The next lag is intermediate. I'm sure you yourself understood that it occurs during the communication between the user and the server. This delay consists in the loss of time for the movement and processing of information packets at all intermediate points. For example, the farther the server is from the user, the longer the information will go. Also important for this lag is the power of the router, hubs and other good things. To put it more precisely, the delay falls on the passage of information over the wires, the quality of the intermediate equipment, the subscriber port and the server port.

The server lag has the same parameters as the client, but only on the server side.

I'm sure after you know how everything works, you have a question about the impact of the script on all this. How can he reduce the remaining two pings and somehow affect not only the Internet channel, but also the server itself, which is very far away? How will installing the script help fix all three lags, even just one? And the answer is very simple: NO. The script is only able to handle the first lag that occurs on the client side. The script can only interact with your operating system, locally on your computer.

But whatever you think, but the formation of this lag (on the part of the client) is a significant part of the ping problem as a whole. But even here not everything is clear. Even from the client side, how is the script able to speed up the ping?

The fact is that there are two types of packets: TCP and UDP. The first packet is the packet that contains the response from the receiver. Remember the dialogue I described above? This is what he is. In the second packet, there is no answer. Games and most applications have and use the second type of package. Therefore, in this case, the script will not be able to help you. But if you use mainly applications with TCP package, then the script will most likely help you.

Before installing such a script, the client received a packet, the computer analyzed it, processed it, and only then gave an answer. During this period of time, several packets have already flown in, which are queued for processing. With the installation of the script, the computer immediately sends a report on the receipt of the package, and only then proceeds to process it.
