History of Swatch Group
In 1983, at the height of the crisis in the Swiss watch industry, Nicolas G. Hayek founded SMH (Swiss Corporation for Microelectronics and Watchmaking Industries Ltd.) through a merger and acquisition of the bankrupt Swiss watch companies ASUAG and SSIH. Under his leadership, the company's position improved dramatically, and in five years it became the world's leading watch manufacturer. In 1998, the company was renamed the Swatch Group.
SSIH, which united Omega and Tissot, was founded in 1930 with the aim of supplying the market with quality Swiss-made watches.
ASUAG was founded in 1931. It systematically expanded through the acquisition of enterprises that produce mechanism blanks, as well as a number of watch manufacturers, subsequently merged into a branch of the GWC General Watch Co. Ltd.
In the 1970s, as a result of the crisis in the Swiss watch industry, both ASUAG and SSIH found themselves in a difficult position. Foreign competitors, in particular the Japanese watch industry, engaged in mass production of new low-cost electronic products and the development of the latest technologies, quickly gained a strong position in the market. As a result, ASUAG and SSIH were on the brink of extinction. At this point, Nicolas G. Hayek, then President of Hayek Engineering (Zurich), is tasked with developing a rescue strategy for both companies. His recommendation to merge ASUAG and SSIH into SMH and launch a low-cost, high-tech, emotionally appealing "second watch" - Swatch (from the English "second watch") - was implemented in 1983 and was followed by Hayek Pool's takeover of a majority stake and the appointment of Nicolas G. Hayek as CEO.
In 1987, the Flik Flak brand was created, dedicated exclusively to children. Today, Flik Flak is the world's leading brand for children's products.
In the future, the company focuses on the higher price segment and in 1992 carries out the purchase of the famous Blancpain brand, followed by the acquisition of the historic Breguet manufactory in 1999, and in 2000 the acquisition of the legend of German watchmaking, the Glashütte Original company and its branch Union Glashütte (reconstructed in 2008), as well as the well-known brand Jaquet Droz, which has received worldwide recognition not only for its watchmaking, but also for its mechanical dolls.
In parallel, the company also began to develop the fashion watch sector, creating the ck watch & jewelry brand in 1997 (a joint venture with the American House of Calvin Klein). The Léon Hatot brand was also revived, specializing in the production of high-end jewelry watches for fashion-conscious women.
The joint venture with , which was signed in 2008, added to the list of prestigious brands and luxury watch brands owned by the company.
Swatch Group founder Nicolas G. Hayek has received a number of honorary awards, including honorary doctorates from the Universities of Neuchâtel (Switzerland) and Bologna (Italy) in 1998, the "Grosses Ehrenzeichen mit Stern" award presented by the Austrian government, the title of Chevalier of the Order of the Lebanese Cedar, Life award from the Swiss Academy of Awards. He was also awarded the title of "Chevalier of the Legion of Honor of France", in 2009 the Minister of Culture of France also awarded him the title of "Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters" for patronage activities, in particular for financial support of the Palace of Versailles and the Louvre Museum in Paris. Nicolas G. Hayek served as Chairman and CEO of Swatch Group Ltd from 1986 to 2010.

In 1963, Nicolas Hayek founded Hayek Engineering in Zurich to provide business consulting services.
In the late 70s, foreign competitors, in particular the Japanese watch companies Seiko and Casio, began to produce inexpensive Digital Watch, constantly developing new technologies, and quickly enough took a strong position in the market. Because of this, Swiss companies are in danger of disappearing.
In 1982, the Association of Swiss Banks, which owned a controlling stake in most watch companies, asked Nicolas Hayek to evaluate their value in order to resell them to the Japanese. He instead put forward a project to revive the industry. The customers agreed to postpone the sale on the condition that Hayek himself would participate in the project with a 51% stake. 151 million Swiss francs, necessary for the implementation of the project, Nicolas allocated from his own funds.
Hayek developed a strategy whereby ASUAG (Longines and Rado brands) and SSIH (Tissot and Omega brands) merged into SMH (Swiss Corporation for Microelectronics and Watchmaking Industries Ltd.) and began producing inexpensive, high-tech and visually attractive watches. His recommendations were carried out, and he himself acquired a controlling stake and was appointed CEO of the new corporation.
The marketing justification for Hayek's strategy was based on a simple experiment: three identical pairs of watches were laid out in control stores in Europe, the USA and Japan, differing only in the price tag and label. The first one was labeled "Made in Switzerland" and cost $110, the second one was "Made in Japan" for $100, and the third one was "Made in Hong Kong" for $90. Buyers everywhere preferred Swiss watches, despite the fact that they cost a little more.

SMH has completely changed the production pattern. Before Nicolas Hayek, every watch manufacturer made most of its parts in-house. After the reform, some factories focused on the production of spare parts, while others assembled watches from universal parts. The cost of production has decreased.
In 1983, the additional brand Swatch was opened in the company. Within its framework, it was decided to produce watches that combine high quality with an affordable price, the latest technologies and modern materials. These watches cost the same as the products of foreign competitors, but were of higher quality. The success was overwhelming: in less than two years, 2.5 million Swatch watches were sold, and by the end of the 1980s, more than 10 million.
In 1986, the income exceeded 1 billion Swiss francs. Hayek's strategy saved hundreds of jobs and brought the new company to the global market in a short time.

In 2000, the company's portfolio included the legend of German watchmaking - the Glashütte Original company, together with its branch Union Glashütte, as well as the well-known brand Jaquet Droz, famous not only for watches, but also for puppet movements. The corporation also paid attention to the segment of jewelry watches, and within the framework of the Swatch Group, the DYB company was created, specializing in the production of jewelry collections for the brands Swatch, Breguet and Omega.

In 2003, Nicolas handed over the post of head of Swatch to his son Nick Hayek, and retained the post of chairman of the board of directors and head of Breguet. After 2009, Nicolas took a similar position at Jaguet Droz.
In November 2005, the ETA factory announced that it would cease production of basic watch movements and sell ready-made calibers of its own production under its own trademarks. After an investigation by the Swiss Antimonopoly Commission, the company undertook to maintain supplies at the current level until the end of 2008, and then for two years - to maintain supply volumes at the level of 50%. In 2011, the release was finally discontinued.
In 2007, Tiffany announced that it had chosen the Swatch Group as a strategic partner for the production of watches under its brand, but in 2011 The Swatch Group Ltd. terminated partnership with Tiffany & Co. The Swiss holding sued the company, pointing to "systematic attempts to block and slow down business development." According to the contract, the final partnership will be terminated at the end of 2013.
Nicolas Hayek died on the evening of June 28, 2010 at the age of 83 heart attack in the workplace and forever remembered by colleagues and competitors as a national hero and savior of the Swiss watch industry.
In early 2013, it became known that the Swatch Group bought the famous American luxury brand Harry Winston Diamond, which specializes in the production of jewelry and luxury watches. The deal amounted to 1 billion US dollars, of which 250 million went to pay the debts of the American company. Upon completion of the transaction, Harry Winston will be renamed Dominion Diamond.
- Nicolas Hayek's daughter Nyla is president of Tiffani Watch Co. Ltd, while her son Marc-Alexandre is in charge of the Blancpain brand.

In addition to working spaces, consisting of open space and meeting rooms of various sizes, the office has a kitchen for employees, as well as separate coffee points.
In addition, a large space is occupied by the so-called service area with systems for storing, processing, repairing and servicing watches. Therefore, the whole space was developed and integrated together with the Swiss colleagues from Swatch.
The entrance group is made of light materials with the minimum amount details. All ceiling engineering communications in the reception area were moved to adjacent areas to exclude the presence of ceiling hatches. Ventilation grilles are hidden in black niches with lamps. The contrast to the space is set by a wood-paneled area, which has built-in illuminated mailboxes and a wardrobe closet, as well as a bright Swatch wall clock.
At each entrance to the working area there are wardrobes with forced ventilation and perforation for better air circulation. Practically throughout the office there are open engineering systems on the ceiling. Part of the open-space for workstations has a light floor covering, ceiling systems are painted white, and the passageway is highlighted with dark carpet, which is graphically repeated by the pattern on the ceiling. The sprinkler system is painted red and acts as a striking piece of art in the space.
The workstations are made of white materials, except for the tops in the center and storage cabinets made of veneered panels. This creates a feeling of home comfort. For acoustic comfort in the office, panels with built-in lights are installed above the tables. They absorb noise and at the same time evenly illuminate work surfaces.
Racks for magazines are installed in the meeting rooms, and white stemalite on the walls allows you to draw graphics and write comments. On the floor - carpet tiles with a graphic pattern.
The mini-negotiation rooms and the informal communication zone are equipped with bright red lamps with a felt lampshade for better sound absorption. They also act as bright accents in space.
The office has a kitchen in a separate room, with full dining tables, refrigerators and microwaves. There are two small coffee points with built-in coolers and storage systems for water bottles. Bar counters are also installed in the coffee points so that you can discuss work issues with a colleague over a cup of tea or coffee.
The Service Center had its own technical requirements for finishing: floor coverings of a certain material and color (to eliminate static and be able to find a fallen part), the walls must be white, the lighting must be at least 1000 lux. The service area is essentially an "operating room" for watches.
The entire technological zone is open to the public. And if you walk along the corridor through the glass windows at eye level, you can see the whole process of watch repair.
Both parts of the office: office and service center- have joint passages for the necessary communication between employees. Since there were many non-standard technical features, such as the supply of compressed air to the repair tables and the safe room, the design process was in close contact with the engineers and the customer, so that all technical problems were solved immediately as they arose.
Since the whole office, according to the customer's task, turned out to be quite strict and concise, the architects were given complete freedom in designing bathrooms. Then we decided to move away from standard solutions in decoration and transfer paintings by artists who worked with Swatch in different years. Each bathroom turned out to be unique, with its own pattern and character.
