At the end of his life, Albert Einstein said: "Our age is characterized by the improvement of means with the increasing obscurity of the goal." Now it's another century, but the improvement of means aimed at causing maximum damage to a potential adversary continues. One of these means, involving a man-made intervention in the relative equilibrium observed in nature, is the so-called tectonic weapon.

This article was born thanks to my communication with the father of Russian tectonic weapons, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexei Vsevolodovich Nikolaev. Until relatively recently, it was not customary to speak or write about this type of unconventional weapon of mass destruction among specialists, and this gave rise to many plausible myths. However, in 2014 A.V. Nikolaev published an article on this topic in the anniversary collection of proceedings of the scientific conference dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Department of Geophysics of Moscow University. This article introduced the geophysical community to the possibilities of military geophysics, the problems of which A.V. Nikolaev worked for many years. My text is intended for a wider audience.

For many years, the weapon that will be discussed was not quite reasonably called geophysical. However, the impact on the geological environment by conventional explosive devices, which can lead to tectonic processes with massive destruction, rather belongs to the field of geology called "tectonics", and not to geophysics.

And this explains the use of the term "tectonic weapons" when in this case it comes to geophysical weapons. Therefore, in my opinion, it would be more correct to call the considered type of non-traditional weapons geological and geophysical.

WHAT THREATENS THE EXISTENCE OF YELLOWSTON PARK

yellowstone national park located in the United States, mainly in the state of Wyoming. He is international biosphere reserve, its area is about 900 thousand hectares. The park is famous for its rich wildlife, picturesque landscapes, geysers and other geothermal objects. On its territory there are lakes, rivers, canyons and caves. About 2 thousand species of plants grow in the park, there are several hundred species of mammals, birds, reptiles and fish.

Yellowstone Lake is one of the largest alpine lakes in North America. It is located in the center of the Yellowstone Caldera. This caldera is considered a dormant supervolcano that has erupted with great force several times over the past two million years. As a result of these eruptions, solidified lava covered most of the park. Its ongoing geothermal life is evidenced by one of the world's five geyser fields. There are about 3 thousand geysers here, which is two thirds of all geysers in the world. In addition, the park has about 10 thousand different hydro thermal springs, including hot and hydrogen sulfide springs, as well as mud volcanoes.

The tasks of the Yellowstone Volcanic Observatory include monitoring volcanic and hydrothermal activity, as well as assessing the possible danger associated with this activity. In 2003, some of the geysers in the park recorded increased activity and higher water temperatures than normal. Several geysers began to emit steam instead of water. In 2006, it was found that the soil in two places in the park is rising at a rate of 4–6 cm per year. This indicated an increase in volcanic and geothermal activity in the park. However, experts have reassured the public, insisting that there is no increased risk of an eruption anytime soon.

Tectonic activity is also evidenced by fairly regular earthquakes occurring here. More than six dozen earthquakes occurred in 2014, one of them with a magnitude of 4.8. These shocks were the strongest in the 30-year history of observations.

Modern landscapes of the park reflect the manifestations of the center of activity of the earth's mantle, located here very close to the Earth's surface under the earth's crust. yellowstone caldera formed as a result of a catastrophic eruption 630 thousand years ago. After this, eruptions occurred constantly, and lava flows regularly flooded the caldera. The period of activity ended 70 thousand years ago.

According to archaeologists, the first inhabitants appeared on the territory occupied by the park 11 thousand years ago. The park is visited by millions of tourists every year. Several paved roads leading to the main attractions pass through it. Their total length is 500 km.

People living on the supervolcano and neighboring territories have full confidence in their experts and do not expect either eruptions or strong earthquakes in the foreseeable future. And small earthquakes occur here in dozens, and they are already used to them.

The threat to the existence of the park comes from the other side. What tempts potential US adversaries is not the beauty of Yellowstone Park, but its vulnerability to the man-made disaster that can be unleashed here. The military is not averse to throwing here in case of war thermonuclear bomb. They have no doubt that when it explodes, the caldera will fall into a hot abyss, dragging the entire district with it. This is how the tectonic weapon in action is seen ...

The brutality of the military in their plans for Yellowstone Park is undeniable. However, one should be objective and ask the traditional Russian question - who is to blame? Here it is just right to recall how, in March 1949, the commander of the US Air Force Strategic Command, General Curtis Lemay, developed a combat plan, according to which it was proposed to drop 133 atomic bombs on 70 Soviet cities within 30 days. According to preliminary estimates, the country could lose about 3 million civilians, and 4 million would be injured. Such plans are still relevant now, they are being prepared by the leadership of the United States and NATO. At the same time, preventive nuclear strikes are planned against Russian cities with a population of many millions.

In light of this, the possible loss of Yellowstone Park, along with its unique attractions in the event of forced retribution, no longer seems so monstrous. Cruelty breeds cruelty.

EXPLOSIONS AND EARTHQUAKES

Earthquakes caused by tectonic movements of the earth's crust are the strongest and most numerous. Its slow movements lead to an increase in stresses in the rocks, and when passing through the tensile strength, the rocks are destroyed almost instantly. This destruction is accompanied by the displacement of one block of rocks relative to another and the release of enormous energy. The length of faults associated with earthquakes can vary from a few kilometers to hundreds of kilometers.

The developers of tectonic weapons have long believed that explosions in seismic zones will certainly provoke large earthquakes, and not prevent them. It turned out, however, that explosions of large charges are capable of preventing catastrophic earthquakes, leading to the discharge of accumulated stresses in the earth's crust even before the focus reaches a critical state.

The study of the influence of nuclear explosions on strong earthquakes has shown that such earthquakes can indeed be initiated. The initiating effect of explosions was observed at distances up to 2000 km from their occurrence. However, the effect achieved was patchy and often contradictory. It was noticed that in some seismically active areas, nuclear explosions, on the contrary, are capable of suppressing seismic activity.

The forecast of earthquake initiation by explosions showed that earthquakes, if they occur, do not immediately after the explosion, but 2–3 days later. Thus, surprise as a factor in military success is not achieved in this case. This and other facts led the father of tectonic weapons A.V. Nikolaev to the conclusion that the tectonic war is today rather a myth. The legend about the existence of tectonic weapons was created, in his opinion, by the media of Armenia and Russia. Rumors that the Spitak earthquake in 1987 was allegedly “arranged” by Azerbaijani and Moscow seismologists with the aim of causing damage to Armenia are pure fiction. By the way, as well as rumors about the use of tectonic weapons against Georgia in 1991, when the Racha earthquake occurred with a source near Tbilisi.

Thus, the rumors that a devastating earthquake can be deliberately provoked are not entirely substantiated.

PARADOXICAL RESULTS

On the thirtieth day after the start of massive bombing in Yugoslavia, a strong earthquake occurred in the Belgrade region. An increase in seismic activity over large areas was also noted after the massive bombing of Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya.

However, in a number of other cases, a decrease in global seismic activity due to nuclear testing has been noted. It is known that from the beginning of underground nuclear tests in 1964 to the moratorium in 1988, more than 3,000 nuclear explosions were carried out at the Nevada, Semipalatinsk, Novaya Zemlya, Lop Nor and Moruroa test sites. During this time, strong seismicity throughout the Earth has noticeably decreased: the number of strong earthquakes has decreased to one or two per year. After the cessation of testing, about five such earthquakes were observed annually, and in different areas.

These results led to the conclusion that global seismicity can be artificially reduced by conducting underground nuclear explosions at several special test sites. However, geophysicists did not put this idea into practice, fearing protests from the greens and the general public.

Note that it was possible to initiate or prevent earthquakes not only by explosions and other seismic sources, but also by electric magnetohydrodynamic generators (MHD generators), as well as by repeated switching on of less powerful sources connected to electric networks.

In the 1990s, at geophysical testing sites in the Pamirs (Tajikistan) and the Northern Tien Shan (Kyrgyzstan), Russian scientists tested installations that could affect the state of tectonics. Two electrodes were installed in the ground at a distance of 4 km from each other. An MHD generator connected to them produced a pulse of several thousand amperes for 10 seconds. The electrical signal penetrated to a depth of 10 km. Receiving devices recorded the response signals, and their variations could be used to judge the approaching tremors. As a result, it was found that during the tests, the number of strong earthquakes near the MHD generator decreased, while the number of weak ones increased. In this case, the generator pulses were a kind of "trigger", leading to the emergence of a large number of weak, non-hazardous seismic shocks.

It is clear that strong natural and deliberately initiated earthquakes can be prevented in this way in seismically hazardous zones.

A tectonic weapon is a hypothetical device or system that can artificially cause earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or similar phenomena in certain areas by influencing natural geological processes. The term "tectonic weapon" was defined in 1992 by A. V. Nikolaev, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, who defined it as something capable of causing a destructive earthquake using the accumulated tectonic energy of the bowels. At the same time, he noted that "setting yourself as a goal to cause an earthquake is an extremely dubious undertaking." The main requirement for tectonic weapons is to release the potential energy of the Earth, direct it to the enemy and cause maximum destruction.

A number of fundamental problems are associated with the creation of tectonic weapons. The main one is the need to initiate earthquakes in a given area, located at a certain distance and azimuth from the site of, for example, an underground explosion.

In order to cause an earthquake "in the right place and at the right time", it is necessary to accurately calculate the natural rhythm of the earth's crust vibrations and then strengthen it with a precisely dosed powerful energy impact - for example, a nuclear explosion.

Today, when the already slightly rusty hatches of missile silos are reopening in the world and countries are threatening each other with a preventive strike, it seems that nothing can be more terrible than nuclear weapons...

Actually - maybe. The latest interceptor missiles and various electronic installations are useless against him. Perfect destructive weapon already ready to use. Hurricanes, earthquakes and floods that sweep away everything in their path cause accidents on nuclear power plants and the panic of hundreds of thousands of people. All this is new - tectonic weapons. And looking at the catastrophes of recent years, one can assume that active tests and verifications of the latest means of destroying mankind are underway. Or World War Has it already started imperceptibly? And when did the history of the most powerful and terrible weapon in the history of wars begin? These questions are of great interest to me.

In my work, I decided to find out: does a tectonic weapon really exist, how does it work, how great is its destructive power, is it possible to control this process. But first of all, I would like to know the history of its creation and what is being done in the world in order to prevent its use.

The history of the emergence and use of tectonic weapons.

Tectonic weapons are based on the use of the potential energy of the Earth and are one of the most destructive. In the second half of the 20th century, the nuclear powers (USA, USSR, Great Britain, France, China, India, Pakistan) carried out about 1600 underground nuclear explosions registered by seismic stations all over the world. The seismicity of the territory is affected by all explosions and vibrations, however, this is most noticeable after nuclear underground explosions. December 1968 is considered the date of birth of tectonic weapons. Then a nuclear test explosion in the state of Nevada (USA) caused a 5-magnitude earthquake.

On November 30, 1987, the resolution of the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR No. 1384-345 appeared, which launched the development of tectonic weapons in the USSR.

In May 1979, a group of Azerbaijani scientists led by Ikram Kerimov made a fundamental discovery in the field of geophysics. Kerimov revealed “patterns of anomalous changes in high-frequency seismic noise, microseisms before earthquakes ... The accumulated theoretical and experimental material made it possible to develop a method of active actions, including the type, power, frequency and duration of certain actions depending on the specific state of the environment in order to activate dynamic processes .. ... the possibility of creating side branches for the flow of energy to the desired area. In other words, Ikram-muallim Kerimov became, against his will, the founding father of tectonic weapons, he discovered a method for controlling the underground elements

Approached the enduring dream of mankind - the timely prediction of earthquakes. This discovery allowed his group to fix the approach of earthquakes in Ismayilli - in four days, in Romania - in eleven days, in the Kuriles - in fifteen days ... Despite such a "civil utility", this breakthrough in geophysics was thoroughly classified and immediately served the basis for the start of a large-scale military project to develop tectonic weapons under the code code "Mercury-18".

The development of directly tectonic weapons in the United States and the USSR began almost simultaneously - from the mid-70s. According to the Stockholm Institute for Peace Problems, the topic of tectonic weapons is highly classified, but is being actively studied in the United States, China, Japan, Israel, Brazil and Azerbaijan. None of the states admitted that they possessed tectonic weapons, however, in the media and in the international arena, allegations of their use are becoming louder. And they are not always groundless: the catastrophic Spitak earthquake, which claimed over 40 thousand human lives and hit all aspects of the Armenian economy, happened precisely at the height of the war in Nagorno-Karabakh. It was extremely profitable for the leaders of Baku. In September 1999, a seismic shock hit Taiwan, causing great destruction and loss of life. Due to repeated shocks, life on the island was destabilized for some time. There were suggestions in the European and Japanese press that such a strike would be an ideal weapon for China, if it had the opportunity to use it as not only weapon but also just to blackmail the Taiwanese government. 7 months after the collapse of the Baghdad regime, the southeastern Iranian city of Bam was destroyed by a series of seismic shocks. Bam is located on a tectonic fault, which is extremely unstable seismically. It is 1400 km away from Baghdad. And at the same distance - from Baku. Baku has been at enmity with Tehran for more than 10 years, ever since Iran took the side of Armenia in the Karabakh conflict. Without his intensive support and logistical assistance, Armenia would have been completely isolated, and its military formations would not have been able to defeat the enemy, occupying a number of western regions of Azerbaijan. Serious territorial contradictions have been added to this conflict in recent years due to the division oil fields on the southern shelf of the Caspian Sea. After a 6-magnitude earthquake, followed by about a hundred weaker ones within a day, in Tbilisi on April 25, 2002, the leader of the Green Party of Georgia, Georgy Gacheladze, accused Russia of initiating the earthquake with the help of the Esher seismological laboratory.

You can't hide a nuclear bomb, but a tectonic one? It was at this time that a difficult task was set for military geophysicists - to develop a weapon of mass destruction of the third millennium, its destructive effect should be hidden at any given point on the planet and not succumb to any existing control systems. Since then, the "tectonic" program has been launched to its fullest, it was not stopped even by a specially adopted UN convention on the prohibition of geophysical experiments on our own planet.

Methods and means of influence

The main requirement for tectonic weapons is to release the potential energy of the Earth, direct it to the enemy and cause maximum destruction. You can set the time and place of an artificially induced earthquake, significantly increase its strength and related effects, using the internal rhythm of the Earth. In the physical representation, the Earth is an elastic deformable body. It is in a state of unstable dynamic equilibrium. Moreover, all subsystems of the planet are non-linear oscillatory ones. These oscillations are formed not only as a result of external influences (forced oscillations), but also arise and are stably maintained in the system itself (the effect of self-oscillations). All subsystems of the planet are open - they exchange with environment energy and matter, which allows using external influences to cause an increase in nonlinearity. The lithosphere is in a state of current (mobile) equilibrium, provided that some of the parameters remain unchanged. When equilibrium is disturbed in the lithosphere, areas of instability arise, which enhance the nonlinear nature of geodynamic systems. The earth simultaneously participates in various oscillatory movements, during which the tension inside the earth's crust changes and the substance moves. "Adjusted" to one of these fluctuations, you can not only set the time and place of a devastating earthquake, but also significantly increase its strength.

For convenience, the oscillatory regimes of the Earth are divided according to their scale: planetary - oscillations are excited by both extraterrestrial energy sources and intraplanetary disturbances; lithospheric - fluctuations from shock-wave energy releases mainly in the lithosphere; crustal geostructural - fluctuations mainly in individual tectonic systems of the earth's crust; near-surface (microseismic) - in the upper part of the earth's crust and on the surface. Planetary oscillations have periods from tens of minutes to hours, the slowest oscillations capture the entire volume of the Earth. They are divided into two large classes: spheroidal (the displacement vector of material "points" has components both in radius and in the direction of movement) and torsional, or toroidal (not related to changes in the volume and shape of the Earth; material particles move only along spherical surfaces) . It is with planetary fluctuations that the geodynamics of the mantle and the periodicity of seismic activity, the collision belts of the crust and the morphostructure of the relief, as well as climate fluctuations, are associated. There is still no exact estimate of geological energy, but approximately the energy of gravity is 2.5x1032 J, rotation 2.1x1029J and gravitational convection 5.0x1028 J. The rotation of the Earth is a daily spheroidal oscillatory process in which the moment of inertia and the movement of the centers of mass periodically change direction. The mode of rotation of the Earth is determined by the angular velocity and the change in the position of the axis of rotation. It is constantly changing under the influence of tides and electromagnetic influences in the solar system. Therefore, in the geospheres, and especially in the lithosphere, stresses arise and processes of mass transfer of different scales occur.

The rotating Earth is a self-oscillatory system, its own oscillations generate an "all-terrestrial" system of standing waves, each of which is a generator and a kind of tuning fork, ready for resonance. These fluctuations cause "pure shear" stresses and all-round compression (or tension) in the lithosphere. The fact that such oscillations are excited by strong seismic events was first discovered in the analysis of the Kamchatka earthquake of 1952 and confirmed in the analysis of seismograms of the Chilean earthquake of 1960. Thus, the appearance of additional oscillatory systems in the depths of the lithosphere is accompanied by interference and, if these oscillations coincide with one of the standing waves, the phenomenon of resonance. The rotational motion of the Earth causes intraterrestrial mass transfer in the depths of the geosphere and a change in the position of the axis of inertia of rotation. There is a correlation between pole trajectory disturbances and strong seismic events.

Lithospheric fluctuations are a consequence of the interactions of lithospheric plates and volumetric destruction of the lithosphere. In a concentrated form, the oscillatory regimes of the lithosphere are represented in the global belts of the seismically active margins of the ocean (more than 75% of the released seismic energy of the Earth) and the ridge zones of the mid-ocean ridges (about 5%). The annual "integrated seismic energy" in the 20th century was about 1.5-25.0 x 1024 erg. The causes of the destruction of the lithosphere are of a global nature and are the process of adaptation of the planetary substance to long-term force effects, such as oscillations of the earth's rotation axis, Coriolis accelerations and tidal waves in the solid shell of the Earth. Volumetric and surface seismic waves are emitted from the area of ​​destruction of lithospheric plates.

The most interesting among them are Rayleigh surface waves (oscillations perpendicular to the motion in the vertical plane) and Love ("horizontal" oscillations). Surface waves are characterized by a strong dispersion of velocities, their intensity sharply (exponentially) decreases with depth. But surface waves from strong earthquakes "run around" the Earth several times, respectively, repeatedly exciting the oscillations of the medium. The total number of seismic events per year with magnitudes from 2 to 8 reaches 106, the total consumption of seismic energy is determined on the order of 1026 erg/year. But about 10 times more energy is spent on mechanical destruction of rock masses, mineral transformations and thermal effects of friction in focal zones than on vibrations of the earth's surface. The energy of an earthquake with a magnitude of about 4 is 3.6 x 1017 J, the energy of an earthquake with M about 8.6 reaches 3-5 x 1024 erg, the energy of a volcanic eruption is 1015-1017 J, the energy of nuclear and mining explosions is up to 2.4 x 1017 J. An example of a seismogenic "Impact" and oscillatory aftereffect are underground nuclear explosions in Nevada at the end of 1968. Crustal vibrations are associated with the activation of seismically active zones of the earth's crust in zones of volcanism, crustal rifts, deformation-metamorphic zones. The main number of earthquakes is of a crustal nature with focal depths up to 30 km, although the propagation of oscillations is not limited to the crust. Crustal oscillations are characterized by extreme non-stationarity. Microseismic (surface) oscillations of the upper part of the crust with a frequency range from fractions to hundreds of Hz are an integral property of the upper part of the earth's crust. They arise after earthquakes and oceanic cyclones, from tsunamis or seiches in closed water bodies, from storm waves and meteorite falls. Such fluctuations can also be caused by wind, waves on lakes and rivers, waterfalls, snow avalanches, the descent of glaciers, etc. Regular low-amplitude vibrational microseisms are often caused by man-made causes.

Properly selected frequencies of microoscillations can lead to the destruction of buildings, road surfaces, pipeline systems. The distribution of internal stresses in the earth's crust is more than heterogeneous. Without a preliminary analysis, it is impossible to determine what the use of tectonic weapons in this place- to a devastating earthquake or weak tremors, or, on the contrary, tectonic stress will be removed, and it will be impossible to initiate an earthquake in this area for a very, very long time. Moreover, the epicenter is guaranteed not to be in the place of the initiating explosion or vibrator. Geographical position goals also play an important role. On this side, countries in traditionally seismically hazardous areas are vulnerable, but earthquakes with a force of at least 9 points should be caused here to guarantee the destruction of earthquake-resistant structures (if any) that can maintain integrity during 7-9 point shocks. To calculate the impact site of a seismically stable zone, of course, a larger amount of input data is needed - from a long-term array of records from local seismic stations to maps of groundwater, communications, and relief. Here it is enough to cause a 5 - 6 magnitude earthquake. The convenience of tectonic weapons is that the explosion can be carried out not on the territory of the target country, but in neutral waters or on the territory of one's own or a friendly power. Of particular note is the vulnerability of countries with ocean coasts - population density is higher there, and an underwater explosion will cause a tsunami. Divergent boundaries (the boundaries of the spreading of lithospheric plates) are most sensitive to directed impacts. These are the boundaries between plates moving in opposite sides. In the Earth's relief, these boundaries are expressed by rifts, tensile deformations prevail in them, the thickness of the crust is reduced, the heat flow is maximum, and active volcanism occurs.

Tectonic weapons and supervolcanoes

Supervolcanoes are another global danger to humanity. Supervolcanoes are huge calderas - cavities that are constantly filled with molten magma rising from the bowels. Gradually, the pressure of the magma increases and one day such a supervolcano will explode. Unlike ordinary volcanoes, supervolcanoes are hidden, their eruptions are rare, but extremely destructive. The caldera of a supervolcano can only be seen from a satellite or aircraft. Presumably, supervolcanoes originated from the most ancient terrestrial volcanoes. They are formed if a large-capacity magma reservoir is located close to the Earth's surface, at a depth of up to 10 km. With a shallow depth (2-5 km), the reservoir has a huge area, up to several thousand square kilometers. The first eruption of a supervolcano is similar to the usual, but very powerful. Since the distance from the reservoir to the surface is small, the magma comes out not only through the main vent, but also through the resulting cracks in the crust. The volcano begins to erupt with its entire body. As the reservoir is emptied, the surviving pieces of the earth's crust fall down, creating a giant pit. The upper part of the magma, cooling and solidifying, forms a temporary basalt overlay, which prevents the rock from falling further. In most cases, the caldera fills with water, forming a volcanic lake. These lakes are characterized by elevated temperatures and high sulfur concentrations.

In total, there are about 40 supervolcanoes. The most dangerous supervolcano is considered to be located in national park Yellowstone, located in the US state of Idaho and Toba volcano in Sumatra. The caldera of the supervolcano in Yellowstone was first described in 1972 by the American geologist Dr. Morgan, it has a length of 100 km and a width of 30 km, its total area - 3825 km2, the reservoir with magma is located at a depth of only 8 km. This supervolcano can erupt 2.5 thousand km3 of volcanic matter. The activity of the Yellowstone supervolcano is cyclical: it has already erupted 2 million years ago, 1.3 million years ago, and finally 630 thousand years ago. Now it is on the verge of an explosion: not far from the old caldera, in the area of ​​the Three Sisters (three extinct volcanoes), a sharp rise in soil was discovered: in four years -178 cm. At the same time, over the previous decade, it rose by only 10 cm, which is also quite a lot of. Recently, American volcanologists discovered that magma flows under Yellowstone have risen so much that they are at a depth of only 480 m. the concentration of hydrogen sulfide and helium - this will be the third call before the tragedy and should serve as a signal for a mass evacuation of the population. The explosion will be accompanied by a powerful earthquake, which will be felt in all parts of the planet. Rocky pieces will be thrown to a height of up to 100 km. Falling, they will cover a gigantic territory - several thousand square kilometers. After the explosion, the caldera will begin to spew lava flows. The speed of the flows will be several hundred kilometers per hour. In the first minutes after the start of the disaster, all living things within a radius of more than 700 km and almost everything within a radius of 1200 km will be destroyed, death will occur due to suffocation and hydrogen sulfide poisoning. The number of personnel involved in the strategic nuclear forces (RVSN, missile submarines, strategic and long-range aviation), exceeding one hundred thousand people, creates favorable conditions for the neutralization of their part by information warfare. The system of a rapid global strike by the United States may in the near future create conditions when a "decapitation" (according to command posts strategic link, managing the use of strategic nuclear forces) and "disarming" (directly at the carriers of strategic nuclear weapons) strikes neutralize the Russian nuclear triad completely or its main part. Finding asymmetric ways to ensure strategic deterrence is vital for the country. Actually, our president spoke about this, noting that we will not be drawn into an arms race, but will take asymmetric measures. It is quite obvious that we are talking about fundamentally new weapon systems based on other ideas than the existing ones.

Terms of Reference for a Megaweapon

Based on the analysis of the situation in relation to the strategic deterrence forces, these new weapons systems must meet certain requirements. First of all - a guaranteed defeat of the enemy. The system must be able to realize its strike potential with 100% probability in sufficient volume to deter. At the same time, it has striking factors that exclude neutralization not only by existing, but also by the most advanced promising means.

The most important requirement is the guarantee of application in the presence of the political will of the country's leadership and objective conditions requiring implementation. This is especially true when the position of supporters of the West is strong in the country, especially in the highest echelons. government controlled, including the military-political one. With massive information and psychological pressure, the execution of the order to use strategic nuclear forces may be questionable, since the number of personnel does not guarantee its absolute reliability, especially if society is split.

Hence the requirement for a minimum personnel for the maintenance and use of an asymmetric containment system. The number of staff should be within the limits determined by the ability to provide an absolute or close to this guarantee of loyalty to the authorities and psychological readiness to execute an order to use the system, regardless of the situation in society and personal emotions. This means that the staff of an asymmetric system cannot exceed several thousand people.

Comparing the power that modern science can provide with the required damage, we come to the conclusion that without the purposeful use of secondary destructive processes, it will not be possible to achieve a result. As such, geophysical catastrophic phenomena primarily attract attention. Surpassing the most powerful nuclear weapons by several orders of magnitude, geocatastrophes can be purposefully initiated by relatively small impacts. Therefore, the weapon of an asymmetric response is based on the use of destructive geophysical processes as the main damaging factors.

Another requirement is the asymmetry of the threat. That is, this weapon system should cause incomparably less damage to the using side than to its opponents. This is achievable if we take into account the geophysical features of the territories of Russia and the United States.

One day without America

First of all, Russia is located on the Eurasian continent, where the main, indigenous part of its territory, where the majority of the population is located, is remote from the ocean and sea spaces. At the same time, the average height above sea level practically guarantees protection against flooding even during large-scale catastrophic events accompanied by powerful tsunamis (megatsunamis).

A different picture in the US. In coastal areas with a slight excess above sea level, the bulk of the population is located - more than 80 percent. The main production facilities of the country are also located here. Even relatively weak tsunamis, several tens of meters high, can lead to catastrophic consequences for the United States. This was very clearly demonstrated by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

Another geophysical feature of Russia is that the main part of its territory in Siberia rests on thick (several kilometers) layers of basalt. It is assumed that these platforms were formed as a result of a supervolcano eruption that occurred about a quarter of a billion years ago. Therefore, impacts, even extremely powerful ones, will not lead to catastrophic geophysical consequences.

What about in the USA?

First of all, attention is drawn to the Yellowstone National Park, located in the caldera of the supervolcano of the same name, which, according to geologists, is approaching the period of its activation, which occurs with a frequency of 600 thousand years. About that much time ago, its last eruption took place. The power of this supervolcano is several orders of magnitude weaker than the Siberian one, so its eruption did not lead to the mass extinction of living beings on the planet as a whole, but for the American continent this eruption undoubtedly had catastrophic consequences. Geologists believe that the Yellowstone supervolcano could explode at any moment. There are signs of increasing activity. Therefore, a relatively small jolt, such as a megaton-class munition impact, is sufficient to initiate an eruption. The consequences will be disastrous for the United States - such a state will simply disappear. Its entire territory will be covered with a thick (several meters or even tens of meters) layer of ash.

Another vulnerable zone in the United States from a geophysical point of view is the San Andreas, a 1,300 km long fault between the Pacific and North American plates. It runs along the coast through the state of California, somewhere on land, and partly under water. Parallel to it are the San Gabriel and San Jocinto faults. This is an area of ​​geophysical instability that generates earthquakes with magnitudes up to 8.5 on the Richter scale. The impact of a sufficiently powerful nuclear weapon can initiate catastrophic events that can completely destroy the US infrastructure on the Pacific coast with large-scale tsunamis.

Finally, one should not forget about the Atlantic and Pacific transform faults. Running parallel to the coastline of the eastern and western coasts USA, they can serve as a source of large tsunamis, which will cause catastrophic damage to a significant depth from the coast.

Disaster Detonator

That is, the United States is a very vulnerable country from a geophysical point of view. It remains to be determined by what means it is possible to initiate such large-scale geophysical processes. Let's turn to history. In 1961, the largest thermonuclear weapon in history was detonated over the northern tip of Novaya Zemlya at an altitude of more than five thousand meters. According to known estimates - 58 Mt. But Western experts came to the conclusion that this was not full power, since, according to a number of signs, the superbomb did not have a uranium-238 shell capable of increasing the explosion power at least one and a half to two times, that is, more than 100 Mt. The ammunition is made in the weight and size characteristics of a 16-ton bomb, which was dropped from a Tu-95 aircraft. Today, an ammunition of such power, according to the estimates of experimenters from the Russian nuclear center in Sarov and a prominent Russian specialist in this field, Doctor of Technical Sciences Igor Ostretsov, can actually be made within 5–7 tons. That is, it is easy to "fit" it into the weight and size characteristics of a heavy rocket (the thrown weight of the "Satan" is about 8 tons). It is also quite uplifting for the satellites launched into orbit today.

Restrictions on both the capacity of individual ammunition by existing parity treaties nuclear arsenals are not imposed. They only talk about quantity. But a megaweapon requires little ammo.

Day after tomorrow

A guaranteed source of catastrophic geophysical processes can be, first of all, an impact on the Yellowstone supervolcano. Even a single ground explosion of 5-7-ton ammunition initiates a powerful eruption. As a result, the United States will cease to exist, although the consequences for the rest of the world will be catastrophic. Russia will be the least affected due to its remoteness from the eruption site, the size of the territory and location. The damage to countries located on the opposite parts of the globe from the United States will also be relatively small. However, in any case, the eruption, we emphasize, will be a disaster for the entire civilization. But then there is such a weapon. By the very possibility of its application, it should stop any thought of aggression against Russia.

Another variant of a mega-strike is the initiation of a giant tsunami. This is the idea of ​​Academician Sakharov. The point is to detonate several munitions at calculated points along the Atlantic and Pacific transform faults (within 3-4 on each) at a depth of one and a half to two kilometers. As a result, according to the calculations of Sakharov and other scientists, a wave will form that will reach a height of 400–500 meters or more off the coast of the United States. Having fallen on the mainland, it will wash away everything at a distance of more than 500 kilometers. If explosions are carried out at great depths, near the bottom, where the earth's crust is thinnest at the points where plates join, it can be locally destroyed, and magma, having come into contact with ocean water, will greatly increase the force of the explosion. In this case, the height of the tsunami will reach more than one and a half kilometers, and the destruction zone will exceed 1,500 kilometers from the coast. It will be an exceptionally "clean" weapon - nuclear winter will not come, since giant dust clouds are not formed, and water vapor will fall on the ground in the form of monstrous radioactive showers near its formation, that is, on the United States. Such an impact will certainly initiate tectonic activity throughout the region, including, quite possibly, the eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano. The reverse wave will wash away Europe. That is, the entire NATO bloc. It will be a monstrous cataclysm. But this is an asymmetric threat of the last frontier - there are no regions of Russia, and there is no entire Western civilization. The detonation of even one powerful munition in the area of ​​the San Andreas, San Gabriel or San Jocinto faults will lead to catastrophic geophysical consequences.

Apocalypse - simple and inexpensive

The considered scenarios indicate that the required number of supermunitions as an asymmetric weapon is very small - about a dozen. This creates favorable conditions for their guaranteed use in accordance with the requirements for asymmetric weapons listed above.

Delivery of ammunition to its destination can be achieved in different ways. First of all, on several single-block heavy ballistic missiles, which, launching together with support missiles, can be guaranteed to overcome all possible missile defense systems even in the long term. It is quite easy to provide a small number of special mine launchers with a reliable defense system built both on power protection and on the principle of stealth. Such a missile could be developed for strategic submarines of the Typhoon system (Project 941). Their missile silos are designed for 96-ton R-39s, which makes it possible to place "with a margin" a modern heavy missile having the required throw weight. One such ship is enough to provide an asymmetric deterrence.

Supermunitions are also integrated with promising hypersonic missiles used from submarines or from land-based launchers. Also, megacharges can be secretly deployed in advance at calculated points at deep positions from Navy ships disguised as civilian ships, with the possibility of delivering an explosion command to them during a threatened period using a combined communication system that provides guaranteed signal receipt. After the situation stabilizes, the ammunition is removed by special vessels.

The time for the development and production of striking elements of the required caliber, according to experts, can range from 5-6 to 10-12 years. Approximately the same amount of time will be required to develop and produce the required number of carriers. That is, an asymmetric mega-weapon may appear in Russia in the next 10 years. Its appearance will eliminate any threat of a large-scale war against our country, even in the face of the enemy's absolute superiority in conventional weapons systems.

He stated that he had at his disposal a plan prepared by the FSB of the Russian Federation, according to which an earthquake stronger than Spitak's should be provoked in the rebellious republic.

According to Lecha Khultygov, at the end of December 1997, a retired general of the FSB of the Russian Federation (who was not named) handed over to the Chechen "colleagues" a package of secret documents revealing the essence of the plan, code-named "Vesuvius": "On February 23, mobile groups created by the special services of Russia, must go down into pre-prepared mines on the territory of the Chechen Republic and put into action powerful devices capable of causing a strong earthquake ... ”(“ Kommersant ”)

Similar "delusional" warnings about the threat of the use of the so-called tectonic weapons by the Kremlin by the leaders of various Caucasian republics have been repeatedly made before. This time the answer was closer than ever. But the secret of the plan "Vesuvius" Lechi Khultygov took with him to the grave. On June 21, he was killed in Grozny during riots. Was there a secret?

Geophysical arms race

At the end of World War II, a certain scientist suggested that the Soviet command bombard Fujiyama with powerful air bombs in order to cause an earthquake in Japan and put an end to the samurai in one fell swoop. This idea was never implemented at that time, but it excited the minds of the peace-loving party rulers thoroughly and for a long time.

After the successful testing by the Soviet Union on Novaya Zemlya in 1961 of the most powerful thermonuclear warhead in the world, equivalent to 50 million tons of TNT, the dream of a tectonic weapon gained unprecedented relevance.
Through the efforts of the KGB, Nikita Khrushchev came across a scientific and technical collection with a report from the commander of an American submarine that his submarine was subjected to the destructive effects of a shock wave from some super-powerful Soviet explosion. This report also expressed the panicked idea that several thermonuclear underwater explosions off the coast of the United States could lead to the flooding of a large part of the North American continent.

The calculation was correct. Khrushchev's imagination instantly painted a picture of the catastrophic damage to US imperialism from a dozen giant tsunamis. And the party leader immediately gave the order to detailed study the possibility of such "exotic" hostilities.

Khrushchev's idea, unobtrusively suggested to him by the KGB, was taken very seriously by Soviet scientists, who had passed severe tests in Stalin's "sharashkas". Suffice it to say that Academician Andrei Sakharov took an active part in working out options for delivering thermonuclear superbombs to the US coast. But after some theoretical calculations, it turned out that the large length and shallow depth of the shelf would not allow a water-atomic attack to be carried out. As a result, the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, through the Ministry of Defense, asked the leadership of the CPSU to stop the futile experiment. But the developers of tectonic weapons, of course, did not rest on this and rushed into the depths of the ocean.

In the early seventies, KGB intelligence reported that American scientists were actively beginning to probe oceanic faults with their bottom seismographs, preparing for a geophysical war. We, in turn, also rushed to look for faults in the bottom of the Pacific Ocean in order to detonate a couple of nuclear charges there and cause a catastrophic earthquake or tsunami in California. Since those glorious times, we have inherited Poisk military submersibles capable of diving even to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. And the GRU still keeps secret the names of its officers who have broken all conceivable diving depth records on these manually operated vehicles and received the title of Heroes for this. Soviet Union (!).

The work was carried out so successfully that soon scientists learned to distinguish natural, natural earthquakes from "induced", that is, caused by the perfidious human impact on their own land (oil and gas production, construction of giant reservoirs, quarrying, and most importantly - underground nuclear explosions ). By mutual tacit agreement, military geophysicists carefully concealed from the Soviet and American peoples that some of the memorable destructive earthquakes were caused by nuclear tests. We are all waiting for earthquake-affected citizens to finally sue the defense ministries of their "superpowers" and demand appropriate compensation. In this lawsuit, they can be helped by some peaceful geophysicists who were able to prove that, for example, an eight-magnitude earthquake in seismically quiet Los Angeles in 1970 was caused by a nuclear explosion produced at a test site 150 kilometers from the city. Or that the devastating nine-point earthquakes in the village of Gazli (Uzbekistan) in the four-point zone were of an artificial nature, since they occurred within two weeks after the nuclear tests in Semipalatinsk (1976 and 1984).

In the early 1980s, the military significance of the development of "geophysical" weapons increased many times over due to the fact that the USSR and the USA, in order not to reach the extreme limit, were forced to stop the nuclear arms race and put their strategic forces under mutual control. You can't hide a nuclear bomb, but a tectonic one? It was at this time that the military geophysicists were given a difficult task - to develop a weapon of mass destruction of the third millennium, its destructive effect should be hidden at any given point on the planet and not succumb to any existing control systems. Since then, the "tectonic" program has been launched to its fullest, it was not stopped even by a specially adopted UN convention on the prohibition of geophysical experiments on our own planet. The fact that politicians have not forgotten about tectonic weapons is evidenced by at least the draft "Concept for Recreating the Common Scientific and Technical Space of the CIS", presented in 1994 for consideration by the heads of state of the former Union. In section 6 (p. 30-31), dedicated to ensuring collective security, states that “in recent years, the “intelligence factor” of military technologies has increased dramatically. In particular, it is becoming more and more difficult to distinguish between defensive and offensive technologies. Treaties and agreements on the reduction of various types of armaments, on control over the military activities of states, and others that have been and are currently being concluded are oriented towards the currently existing technologies and means. As a result, the Commonwealth at certain points in time may turn out to be unprepared for the unexpected appearance of new, including “exotic” types of weapons (geophysical, biological, parapsychological, etc.) in potential adversaries.”

Father of the "tectonic bomb"

We met this man in the summer of 1991 in Baku during the first international conference of geophysicists dedicated to "induced" earthquakes. The event is historical for science, because, in fact, it was an international rebellion of geophysicists, forced for many years under the threat of a criminal article on the disclosure of "military secrets" to keep silent about the seismic danger of underground nuclear explosions. It was there that for the first time a sensational confession was made by Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences Alexei Nikolaev about the direct connection between nuclear tests and subsequent earthquakes. Thus, the long-standing claims of Mexico, Peru, Chile, Cuba, Iran and other countries against the USA, the USSR, China and France, which repeatedly accused the nuclear powers of provoking earthquakes on their territories, were scientifically confirmed. In the evenings, after the reports, we drank red wine from the cellars of the former Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan with the "rebellious" corresponding member Nikolaev, and he initiated us into the secrets of geophysics. It was then that we met a charming and intelligent person - Ikram-muallim, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Kerimov. But no matter how interesting and informative the table lectures of the two scientists were, it was felt that they were clearly not telling something, that their frankness had a limit called “military geophysics”. It was from that time that our journalistic research began. In the end, patience and logic led to the fact that a stunning package of documents came into our hands recently. Finally, it became clear what the scientists actually silently rebelled against in 1991 in Baku. They were the main developers of the fundamental principles of the operation of tectonic weapons. Direct participants in the top-secret military program "Mercury-18", which is working out "a technique for remotely influencing an earthquake source using weak seismic fields and transferring explosion energy." And for the first time the Azerbaijani scientist Ikram Karimov learned to control these weak fields.

"Hyperboloid" by Professor Kerimov

In May 1979, a group of Azerbaijani scientists led by Ikram Kerimov made a fundamental discovery in the field of geophysics. (Further we quote the “Final report on research work for 1994 under the Vulcan program of the Seismology Center of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan under the stamp “top secret”, copy No. 2.) Karimov revealed “patterns of anomalous changes in high-frequency seismic noise before earthquakes, microseism...

The accumulated theoretical and experimental material made it possible to develop a method of active influences, including the type, power, frequency and duration of certain influences depending on the specific state of the environment in order to activate dynamic processes ... the possibility of creating side branches for the flow of energy to the desired area. In other words, Ikram-muallim Kerimov became, against his will, the founding father of tectonic weapons, he discovered a method for controlling the underground elements. Approached the enduring dream of mankind - the timely prediction of earthquakes. This discovery allowed his group to fix the approach of earthquakes in Ismayilli - in four days, in Romania - in eleven days, in the Kuriles - in fifteen days ... Despite such a "civil utility", this breakthrough in geophysics was thoroughly classified and immediately served the basis for the start of a large-scale military project to develop tectonic weapons under the code code "Mercury-18".

Earth! Earth! I am "Mercury-18"

The cynicism of the military is amazing. However, this is their profession - to defend their homeland, by any means, even at the cost of the death of the entire planet. But that is why Kerimov's work received the highest support. On November 30, 1987, the resolution of the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR No. 1384-345 appeared, which launched the development of tectonic weapons in the USSR.

We got into our hands the official correspondence (under the heading "top secret", copy No. 1) of the deputy head of the Mozhaisky Military Engineering Institute, Professor L. Tuchkov, with the director of the Institute of Geology of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, Academician L. Alizade. For five years, from February 1986 to March 1990, Azerbaijani scientists were instructed to develop "Models of the process of functioning of military-technical systems, taking into account geophysical factors." According to this plan, by January 1990, scientists were to submit a final report on "a method of remote impact on the source of earthquakes and the transfer of explosion energy using weak seismic fields." In the chapter "Expected results" of this military terms of reference it is stated: to define "applied aspects of remote influence on tectonic processes". Simply put, it is about the ability to cause earthquakes in the right place at the right time.

Particular attention in this document was paid to the regime of secrecy:

“To carry out research work on paragraphs. 5, 6 (method of exposure and energy transfer), it is necessary to allocate a separate room.

For the purpose of foreign technical radio countermeasures, meetings, meetings, seminars should be held in internal, well-visible premises. (The windows of the premises should face the inner courtyard of the Institute). Before the meetings, the premises are carefully inspected (inside and outside) for the absence of any technical devices (transmitters, memory devices, etc.). Conduct research under the legend "Development of the problem of forecasting tectonic earthquakes." Limit the list of performers.

Curators from the General Staff of the USSR Ministry of Defense, headed by the chief military seismologist, Major General V. Bocharov, and representatives of the KGB demanded that a "tectonic bomb" be created at an accelerated pace - by 1990, which was hardly realistic, given the gigantic amount of scientific work. Nevertheless, in 1988, the group of Kerimov, who by this time had become a doctor of physical and mathematical sciences and a professor, began the first experiments at a test site about 50 kilometers from the city of Batken (Kyrgyzstan). The work used a receiving center and three remote seismic stations of the 9690 digital system, produced by special order in England. According to experts, the first experiments were successful and were then continued with even greater intensity at another test site in Uzbekistan.

The scale of the military program "Mercury-18" can be judged from the list of twenty-two scientific institutions involved in this project (see the scheme of co-executors of the Mercury-18 program). As a result, as follows from the report of I. Kerimov, by the beginning of the nineties, “the accumulated theoretical and experimental material made it possible to develop a method of influence in order to activate dynamic processes or discharge excess stresses in the environment,” that is, to cause earthquakes of any power. Moreover, “the laboratory of geomorphology of the Institute of Physics of the Earth of the USSR Academy of Sciences took part in the work, which carried out special field observations to study long-extended tectonic faults that stretched for several thousand kilometers, in order to analyze the predominant propagation of seismic energy, the possibility of creating side branches for energy flows into the desired area, the possibility of activating an inactive fault system, etc.” In other words, it became possible to cause earthquakes, being thousands of kilometers from the zone of artificial seismic activity and in places where there were no earthquakes for centuries.

It is hard to imagine how the destructive experiments of Professor Kerimov would have ended if there had not been a break in the bowels of the Soviet political system and the Union had not collapsed. And since the Mercury-18 program required huge costs, including for placing seismic equipment on board space satellites, then the cessation of funding instantly led to her death.

The last thing that Kerimov's group managed to do was to determine a clear relationship between the earthquake in Georgia and the numerous casualties and the massive bombing of the Americans in the Persian Gulf in 1991. Then a unique team of innovative scientists began to quietly fall apart ...

Strange "seismic activity" of special services

After Azerbaijan had already become sovereign, Professor Ikram Kerimov was approached by his former colleague at the Institute of Geology Niyaz Baishev, who had emigrated to South Africa. His proposal was unexpected: “In Baku, your scientific research, Ikram-muallim, is not needed by anyone. Do you want to move to South Africa? Get the funding you need and all of Africa for seismic research!” As a scientist for whom scientific interests are above all, Kerimov agreed, but with one condition: "The whole group must leave, preferably with their families."

Promising not to delay in answering, Baishev disappeared. Forever. And after him, in November 1992, Jafar Jafarov, a senior researcher at the Institute of Geology of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, left Baku with his wife and child. For some reason, Jafarov arranged travel documents in Moscow and in South Africa, together with his family, flew away from Sheremetyevo-2 without hindrance. In Kerimov's group, he was the main programmer.

According to official data, now Jafarov in South Africa is engaged only in computer graphics. But it is not known whether he earns his living only by this purely civil occupation. And the fate of the recruiter Baishev was sadder - he died not so long ago. Again, according to the official version - from careless handling of personal weapons.

Another subordinate of Kerimov now lives and works in Israel. His invitation and departure were issued at a high government level.

As we know, in March 1995, Professor Kerimov asked emergency assistance from the Minister of National Security of Azerbaijan N. Abbasov, because one night a pogrom was organized in the working offices of Kerimov's group, more like a search. In a letter to the minister, the scientist said that someone had broken not only the door locks, but thoroughly dug into the computer with analysis programs, and most importantly, stole a computer “in which there was top-secret information about the results of our research over the past two or three years and analysis of the results of all studies conducted on the special topic.

All this could have been ignored if strange events had not taken place earlier, definitely suggesting that the special services of various states were active in intelligence activities in the field of developing tectonic weapons.

In 1981-1982, UNESCO decided to compile a new catalog of catastrophic earthquakes for the period from 1900 to 1965. As part of this program, the United States turned to Soviet seismologists with a request to provide relevant data. In exchange, portable copiers were offered, which would be used for copying. The KGB asked our seismologists to evaluate the requested data. And the experts came to an unequivocal conclusion: the information extracted from the seismograms would allow the Americans to simulate options for wave action on various regions of the USSR and would make it possible to find out the "visibility" of tests of tectonic weapons from our territory.

Then, as part of the implementation of the program of total control of nuclear tests, the US Department of Defense proposed the installation of thirty seismic stations on the territory of the USSR in order to simultaneously supply us with the information received. When six stations were put into operation, it turned out that the Americans tirelessly supplied us with distorted information. It would seem that the competent authorities should have thought about what is happening, but the program is successfully continuing now.

In the early eighties, "due to internal contradictions between the staff of the Institute of Physics of the Earth of the USSR Academy of Sciences," an employee of the state apparatus of Japan, Kazuo Hamada, was acquainted with the results of the scientific activities of Kerimov's group. Simply, employees of the Moscow Institute of Physics of the Earth, expressing their negative opinion about the work of their Azerbaijani colleagues, devoted the Japanese to all the details of Kerimov's discovery. Later, the KGB conducted its covert investigation to assess the damage from the disclosure of this information, and the general conclusion was disappointing: just in the early eighties, Japan began to actively develop military geophysical programs ...

But what about Russia? According to our data, in the early nineties it was planned to create five or six groups of specialists similar to Kerimov's group, as well as to equip two training grounds for Far East for geophysical experiments for military purposes. In this situation, all the statements of the Caucasian leaders about the possibility of using tectonic weapons against their republics are not such nonsense. Another thing is that, most likely, due to serious financial difficulties, Russia has already lost priority in these developments, and the Western and East Asian intelligence services most likely took advantage of the results of the discovery of Kerimov's group.
