An incredibly beautiful island ... But with the June weather I was a little unlucky. No, there was no precipitation, but I did not have enough heat. I went for a beach vacation. And as a result: I spent only a couple of hours near the ocean. Swimming is cool, sunbathing is uncomfortable.

What kind of weather did Madeira meet in June?

Summer is on the calendar ... But on the island it feels like late spring. I did not wait for the heat and excessive heat in June. And the sunny weather did not spoil. Most of the days were cloudy. But no precipitation. By lunchtime, the temperature rose to +19. Due to the humidity, it felt a little more. The temperature at night, which I liked especially, dropped by only 3 degrees. There is a minimum temperature difference. She didn't make herself swim in the ocean. Although the water in June is warmer than the air, +21. Yes, the temperature of the ocean water does not depend on the air temperature. Only underwater currents have a temperature effect. Daylight hours are 14 hours.

What things to take on a June vacation

Summer clothes were taken home intact. At the beginning of summer, it is comfortable to walk here in spring clothes. It's cool in shorts and T-shirts. I recommend taking:

  • tennis shoes;
  • shirts;
  • skirts;
  • breeches;
  • jeans;
  • pullover;
  • windbreaker;
  • moccasins / shoes.

Even the sun did not have to protect the skin. Although I spent most of my time on the street. As for the bathing accessories, they will be needed only by the daredevils. Also, do not forget about the first aid kit. The assortment of local pharmacies is diverse, but it is difficult to choose a medicine having a language barrier. And pharmacies do not work around the clock. Saturday is a day off.

Tourist saturation in early summer

There are few vacationers. The beach areas were empty. I never noticed active traffic on the roads. I traveled calmly in a rented car. Accommodation prices and services are average. During the rest there were no price increases.

I plan to tour again in August.

"Island of Eternal Spring", "Pearl of the Atlantic", home of the famous Madeira wine, Madeira archipelago is a real tropical paradise, located 1000 km south-west of the Portuguese capital, 680 km west of Morocco and only 450 km north of Canary Islands... Read our article on the Tour Calendar and you will find out why the best time at its resorts is from May to mid-October.

Tourist season in Madeira

The emerald green Madeira archipelago, which, in addition to the island of the same name, consists of the inhabited island of Porto Santo, is one of the oldest resorts in Europe, which has been welcoming tourists since the beginning of the 19th century. At that time, only the cream of the aristocratic society rested on the island, such as: royal families, politicians, outstanding writers. Thus, Winston Churchill and Bernard Shaw were dearly loved by Madeira. Conquered by its amazing climate and fantastic beautiful nature full of rich, bright colors, they came back here again and again. Little has changed here today. Up to 1,000,000 foreigners visit the island annually. The tourist audience is represented by movie stars, businessmen, show business figures, athletes and just wealthy people. They all come here for a respectable, leisurely vacation. Indeed, it is difficult not to fall in love with this fragrant oasis, literally reborn from the ashes. Thanks to its exceptional climate, the season lasts here all year round.

High season

Despite the fact that the tourist flow to the island never dries up, there are two seasons in which there is a massive influx of foreign visitors. It's summer when it's in full swing beach season, and a few weeks of winter - the time for New Year and Christmas holidays, festivals and carnivals. At this time it is very enchanting here, and the hotels offer great entertainment programs. If you come to Madeira during the high season, then the British, Canadians, Germans and French are most likely to meet in hotels and on the beaches. Russians can be counted on one hand, since there are no regular or charter flights from Russia to the island. And as a result, the rest, given that prices "in season" are inflated by 2-2.5 times, turns out to be "golden" (meaning a flight with a docking in European countries). So the summer reservation of our compatriots is the Spanish Riviera.

Low season

If you want to enter 1.5% of people who make up the share Russian market in Madeira, but at the same time you do not have countless riches, you should think about relaxing in low season when prices are down 15% - 25%. Many travel agencies at this time make very lucrative offers, but the main difficulty lies in finding and redeeming such tours in time, because the end of autumn, winter and the beginning of spring in Madeira is a continuous series of holidays. In addition, the temperature of the air and water at the very cold month in the year - not lower than +17 ° C, so from November to March people come here on excursions, for surfing, and just for peace and quiet. But, of course, not as much as in summer period... A limiting factor for mass tourism is the so-called wet season. But, as a rule, the rains "do not flood" all day long, but go on for several hours, about once every three days. Therefore, holidays in the low season in Madeira are still good, the main thing is to constantly monitor the offers on the websites of travel agencies.

Beach season in Madeira

Many travel guides to Madeira tell that the "island of eternal spring" bathing season lasts all year round. Theoretically, this is so, and you can verify this by looking at our weather reports. However, it is worth bringing some clarity. The water in the Atlantic Ocean, even in Madeira, near the shores of which flows warm current The Gulf Stream warms up to comfortable temperatures only in summer. Moreover, in June, these figures are not yet sufficient for prolonged swimming, as well as bathing children - about +21 ° C. And only by July the ocean becomes more or less warm - about +23 ° C. In winter, it is quite chilly to enter the water. Firstly, piercing winds blow, causing the waves of the water surface, sometimes strong waves rise. In addition, it rains periodically. Considering all this, as well as the fact that in winter the water cools down to + 17 ° C .. + 18 ° C, the answer becomes obvious. Unless on fine days, you can get out to the beach for a short while: take a quick dip, and devote the rest of the time to sunbathing.

Velvet season in Madeira

Since the island has excellent weather almost all year round, the period of velvet season can be determined only by slightly decreasing temperature marks. Its opening falls on the first days of September, when the ocean water becomes one degree cooler. While on the coast of continental Portugal the water temperature is already 20 ° C, in Madeira these figures are significantly higher - about +22 ° C. They continue to swim on the island in October, but this is already a borderline period: the air cools a little and its temperature becomes the same as the temperature of the water, which stubbornly continues to “hold on” to the +22 ° C mark. However, the clear weather reigning until the middle of the month on the island is overshadowed by the first rains, so at least beach vacation in the middle of autumn is still very possible, but guarantees that in vacation days it will be dry and calm, no one can give. From November to December, much less people except for surfers.

The best time for excursions

There is no time to be bored in Madeira. Despite the compact size of the island, you may not have time to explore all of its riches in one trip. Usually excursion programs include a visit botanical garden"Jardim Botanico Funchal", walks along the cobbled streets of ancient towns, "marches" through authentic villages scattered along the coast of the island, hikes along the irrigation canals of the levada, ascent to the crater of the volcano, etc. As a rule, all trips are designed for the whole day, and almost the entire outcome of the excursion depends on what the weather will be. It is believed that the best time for sightseeing of the island, the bulk of which, by the way, is under open air, is the period from March to early October.

Wine season

About 1,700 hectares of fertile soils of the island are occupied by vineyards, thanks to which Madeira is known all over the world today. The beginning of the harvest season, usually in the first week of September, is marked by the grandiose Festa do Vinho da Madeira wine festival. Guests of the holiday will enjoy colorful processions, concerts, contests, exhibitions and, of course, tasting the "sun-born" drink. Also, tourists can take part in master classes in the collection of grapes.

Golf season

Those who have a special passion for golf cannot remain indifferent to Madeira. Today it has three golf courses, the courses of which maximally repeat the natural landscape of the area. The island's subtropical climate allows you to play in Madeira all year round. In May, thousands of golfers from all over the world come to the major golf competition included in the European Main Tour of the Professional Golf Association.

Pilgrimage season

Religious holidays in Madeira are celebrated, perhaps, on a much larger scale than local festivals. These days there is a special thrill and awe. The islanders honor all the dates of the Catholic calendar, so to get acquainted with them you can look at the section about. It is worth highlighting the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin in Monte, which falls on 15 August. At this time, the city becomes a real center of pilgrimage, where an incredible number of believers from all over Portugal flock: colorful fireworks, "crazy" illumination, solemn processions stretching for several kilometers, and much more. Madeira has a special atmosphere at Christmas. Preparation for it begins long before December 25 - the holiday lights are lit at the end of November, after which a series of tourists awaits cultural events, performances, and a Christmas market. Christmas itself is marked by a sumptuous themed carnival.

It's time for holidays and festivals

The island welcomes its guests all year round, which is why Madeira is a whirlpool of holidays, festivals and noisy fun. Probably one of the most grandiose events is the celebration of the New Year, which deserves the attention of not only hundreds of thousands of tourists from many countries of the world, but also receives a certificate from the Guinness Book of World Records. And all because in New Year's Eve it hosts the largest fireworks show in the world, using tons of charges to organize it. A similar celebration of pyrotechnics takes place on the island in June, this is the "Atlantic International Fireworks Festival" in Funchal: virtuosos of the art of fireworks from many European countries are fighting for the most spectacular fireworks. In January, there is a chance to participate in free walking tours along the fascinating routes as part of the Madeira Islands Walking Festival. In February, a few days before the beginning of Lent, real madness is happening on the island, this is the long-awaited Carnival - processions of jesters, colorful shows, incendiary dances. In mid-April, the already fragrant island turns into a real tropical garden. It is at this time that the Flower Festival takes place here, especially striking with a stunning "wall of hope" erected from fresh flowers. In the early days of summer, Madeira meets a two-day Jazz Festival, and on June 21, all attention is focused on the capital of the island, which celebrates City Day. At the beginning of August, the International Rally takes place along the steep, mountain roads of the island - the adrenaline from the beholder will definitely go off scale. On November 1, the village of Kural dash Freiras welcomes everyone to the Chestnut gastronomic festival.

Climate in Madeira

Madeira is the ideal place to enjoy the sun at any time of the year, thanks to its subtropical Mediterranean climate. There are no extreme here weather conditions in the form of extreme heat or cold. It is for this that she was nicknamed "the island of eternal spring", where azaleas, orchids, bougainvillea, poinsettia, wisteria and others bloom all year round. exotic plants. Average annual temperature air temperature is about 20 ° C, and the water temperature even in winter does not drop below +17 ° C, which is due to the large impact on the Gulf Stream island, thanks to which the local climate is considered one of the most mild climates in the world. The dry season lasts from May to October, and the period from November to April is quite humid. At this time, it rains most often on the northern tip of the island.

Madeira in spring

In spring, the island is "" revived "" in the fragrance of flowers, in young greenery, in the soft rays of the warm sun

Spring in Madeira is the most fantastic time of the year. And although they say that it reigns on the island all year round, believe me, in the spring the island "plays" with new, fresh colors. After heavy rainfall that fed the earth throughout the autumn-winter season, nature responds with a riot of greenery, a fresh aroma alpine meadows and the delicate scent of orchards. In March, the weather becomes calmer and more rosy. Daylight hours are increasing, and the sun is increasingly shown in the sky. The water in the ocean is gradually warming up, but the holiday-makers do not bathe en masse yet. Another thing is in April, when it becomes one degree warmer. In addition, in the south, where the main resorts are located, there is practically no precipitation. And in the north, their volume is almost halved. May is the beginning of a high tourist season due to the already stable warm and dry weather, which marks the final end of the wet season. However, it is worth remembering that as the twilight thickens, the air begins to cool quickly.

Madeira in summer

Holidays in Madeira in the summer are a real find for those who are contraindicated to stay under the burning sun or who do not tolerate high temperatures. There is neither one nor the other on the island. Atlantic Ocean has a softening effect on the air coming from Morocco, so even at the very height of the season there is no exhausting heat here. The sun's rays are less aggressive here. In addition, at this time of the year, the lungs are constantly blowing. northwest winds that refresh well. The maximum marks of the thermometer in July and August are +23 ° C and +24 ° C, respectively. In some years, higher rates were noted, but this happened very rarely. Madeira has the longest swimming season in all of Portugal. You can swim here from the beginning of June, when the water warms up to +20 ° C .. + 21 ° C. However, this is not enough for many holidaymakers, and they open their beach season not earlier than July at + 23 ° C. In general, if you are planning to spend your summer vacation in Portugal and are counting on a few days of rest on the coast, then you will not find Madeira better, since only here is the most warm ocean due to the influence of the underwater currents of the Gulf Stream.

Madeira in autumn

It is difficult to say exactly when the climatic autumn begins in Madeira. In the first two calendar months- certainly not. Although the thermometer is dropping by a couple of degrees, in general the weather is still great: soft sun, light breeze, rich colors of nature and a warm ocean that does not even think to cool down. Although it is worth noting that from the second half of October the nights are already becoming relatively cool, but the temperature does not drop below +18 ° C. In the last days of the month, slanting rains begin to fall, but they, unlike mainland Portugal at this time, are short-lived. November is a rainy month, nevertheless very warm, with a considerable amount of sunny days, which can be easily spent on the beach, and not only sunbathing, but also swimming: the water temperature in the ocean is about +20 ° C .. + 21 ° C.
