When we heal from diseases, get rid of problems, grow and develop as individuals - in what direction are we moving? What is a "full person", "mental health", "optimal functioning"? Are these concepts universal? What will remain if we leave out the cultural and historical context - the differences introduced by the specifics of the historical era and place, as well as the personality traits of the founder of a particular psychotherapeutic school?

In search of answers to these questions, 55 research psychologists led by Chris Peterson and Martin Seligman (the "father" of positive psychology) spent three years reading and comparing religious and philosophical sources, highlighting the "telos", the goal of development human personality. They ended up allocating 24 " strengths character/personality. Strengths of character/personality are certain values and an individual style of embodying each of them in actions. These 24 strengths are combined into six groups - virtues. Next, the scientists conducted a large-scale cross-cultural study (in 52 countries) to test whether these strengths are indeed universal and valuable to people of different cultures.
It turned out that yes, they are universal.

So now we know exactly what it is “personal development” is the development of its strengths. Each person has their own special "greatest strengths" - 4-5 or more - and they add up to a unique configuration. At the same time, no configuration is better than the other, each of them is valuable.

Moreover, the configuration of the "strongest points" may change over time.

Strengths are not outstanding innate abilities that you either have or you don't. They can be deliberately developed by exploring and transforming oneself in the process.

Each of the strengths can be optimally developed, overdeveloped or underdeveloped (in the last two cases, this is no longer a virtue, but something else). Each of the strengths supports the optimal implementation of the others.

That is, in order to develop as a person, our task is:

Clarify the values

Better tune in to them

Understand how they manifest themselves in our actions and

Create new habits that will help the best way realize these values, embodying the unique style of activity of each person. published .

Be honest, however, sharply negative personal qualities are inappropriate for a resume, you should not quote them. The second column of the table will scare away the employer. Character traits from the third will play positive role for certain posts. Do not be cunning and do not try to present advantages as disadvantages. This will be conspicuous and convict of insincerity.

Examples: individualism is good for creative profession, helps to stand out from the crowd to the presenters or artists. Working in a team, on the contrary, one must be able to become part of the team and take into account the opinions of others. A pedantic nature will make it difficult to work quickly, but is appropriate where quality comes first. Modesty will prevent you from communicating freely with customers, however, with the right approach, it will put the company in a good light.

Individual differences between people are more pronounced in emotional sphere and are related to the peculiarities of human feelings: on which object or phenomenon attention is focused, how a person expresses his attitude. Volitional qualities help to achieve goals, not be afraid of difficulties and be successful. Morality regulates the behavior and consciousness of people in all areas of life. Intellectual traits characterize the mental activity of a person.

Character and temperament

Temperament, being an innate personality trait, affects the formation of character traits. The development and manifestation of strengths and weaknesses depends on temperament. The social environment has a significant impact on the emergence of new qualities, leaving the properties of temperament unchanged.

Character is expressed in the behavior and actions of a person, the totality of his traits is divided into negative and positive. Temperament manifests itself in manners and style and is not judged as "good" or "bad", it counteracts or contributes to the formation of certain character traits.

Advantages and disadvantages

Every personality has strengths and weaknesses. It depends on the self-esteem of a person, his attitude to people and work, which of them will be most pronounced. Weak character traits impede growth and development, strong ones help to cope with difficulties, move forward and achieve goals.

Actions according to the plan will relieve fussiness and teach discipline. The plan for the day can be changed, but always highlight three main points in it that must be completed. This will develop the skill to distinguish the main from the secondary and not waste time on trifles.

76 925 0 Hello! In this article we want to tell you about the strengths and weaknesses of a person. After all, everyone has to face this question when compiling a resume or during an interview for employment.

Strengths and weaknesses of a person

The strengths and weaknesses of the personality are closely related and should not contradict each other. Each person has their own disadvantages and advantages. As a rule, we are used to talking about strengths, but we are often silent about weaknesses.

An independent, purposeful and self-critical person always recognizes that there are many weaknesses in his character. And there is nothing wrong with that. We are all humans. But every purposeful person can turn his shortcomings into virtues through painstaking work on himself.

So, what are human strengths and how to find them? To do this, first of all, pay attention to your talents and skills. Here you will find your strengths. When you find your strengths, work on them, develop them. This will allow you to fully open up.

If you cannot independently determine your strengths for the questionnaire, ask your acquaintances and friends for help. Thanks to their opinion, you can discover advantages in yourself that you didn’t know about before. And in some ways your opinion will converge with the opinion of your friends.

In addition to the strengths in the resume, there is often a question about your weak qualities. You shouldn't be ashamed of them. If you claim that you have no negative character traits, this will become a sign of an unformed personality for the recruiter. Which in the future is unlikely to help you get the desired position.

Exceptions to the rules

When applying for a job, indicate in your resume those strengths that will help you get the desired position. After all, some of your strengths for some position may turn out to be shortcomings that the applicant should not have.

Here are the most common examples. For a device to the position of a manager, you should not talk about the ability to sing. This is unlikely to help you get a job. For the employment questionnaire, we recommend that you select such weaknesses that will help characterize you as a responsible and worthy person to occupy this position. The negative qualities of your character should help you fulfill the functions assigned to you.

What else should be paid attention to in the questionnaire or resume

  • Be sure to indicate on your resume that you always set goals for yourself and achieve them, that is, you are a goal-oriented person. At the same time, be persistent and always follow a pre-planned plan.
  • It is also worth pointing out that in case of unforeseen circumstances, you can find a way out of the current situation - you have a creative mind.
  • Another important component of any successful applicant is self confidence. This will characterize you as a confident person who is not afraid to take a step forward. You are not inclined to panic due to unforeseen circumstances, you are calm and confident in your abilities.
  • It is also very important the ability to communicate with people. Let it be customers, colleagues, subordinates, suppliers. You just need to be able to find a "common language" with them, accept their point of view and correctly present your opinion.
  • One more positive trait nature, which must be indicated in the employment application form, is a responsibility. No matter what position you apply for, you must always be responsible for your actions. Otherwise, you will become a burden on the company, which will eventually lead to you being fired.

Also, when applying for a new position, indicate that you are well trained. You can give examples from past work or university practice. When you come to new company, the first time you will need to study: learn about the company, about the features of its activities and learn how to fulfill your direct duties.

Exercises to identify strengths and weaknesses

Sometimes it is very difficult to determine your personal qualities on your own. Especially if you are nervous or writing a resume for the first time. To eliminate worries and unpleasant moments, make a list of your qualities before the interview. And how to do this, we will help you. So:

  1. Analyze your character. To do this, remember what you are good at and what is bad. And also what qualities are needed to perform these tasks. Write everything down so you don't forget.
  2. If you cannot independently assess your qualities, ask your loved ones and acquaintances whom you trust about it. They will help you find your strengths and point out your weaknesses.
  3. Assess your surroundings. Determine which positive and negative traits your friends have character. Compare with yourself what you have and what you don't have. Write it down.
  4. Next, evaluate the qualities that you indicated. You need to select what from this list is your strengths and what is your weaknesses. Let's say that at the university you could not make a presentation in front of an audience. Means your weak side is the fear of the public. But you made this report, which means that you are an assiduous, attentive, responsible and hardworking person.
  5. Next, from the selected qualities, you need to choose your personal and professional qualities.
  6. Determine what qualities a candidate for your job should have. Write them down.
  7. Now make a selection of your personal and professional qualities in accordance with the qualities that a candidate for the desired position should have. Write it down.
  8. After the work done, identify your shortcomings and how you can deal with them.
