1. Study with interest

Any teacher will confirm: abstract language learning is more difficult than mastering a language for a specific purpose. Therefore, at first, learn things that will be useful to you in your work. Another option is to read resources in a foreign language related to yours.

2. Memorize only the words you need

There are more than a million words in English, but in everyday speech, at best, several thousand are used. Therefore, even a modest vocabulary will be enough for you to talk with a foreigner, read online publications, watch news and TV series.

3. Put up stickers at home

it efficient way top up your vocabulary... Look around the room and see which items you don't know the names of. Translate the title of each subject into English, French, German - whatever language you want to learn. And place these stickers around the room. New words will gradually be deposited in memory, and this does not require any additional effort.

4. Repeat

The spaced repetition technique allows you to better memorize new words and concepts. To do this, run the studied material at regular intervals: first, repeat the learned words often, then return to them after a few days, and after a month, reinforce the material again.

5. Use new technologies

6. Set realistic goals

Be careful with the load and do not overdo it. Especially at the beginning, so as not to lose interest. Teachers advise you to start small: first, learn 50 new words, try to apply them in life, and only then tackle the grammar rules.

Why learn English

A question that sounds like sarcasm to me personally. Today English is the main international language for communication. It ranks third in terms of the number of speakers (right after Chinese and Spanish), and is state-owned in 99 countries of the world. In terms of the number of speakers, it is a solid second place (about 1400 million) and is inferior to Chinese only because the population of China itself is more than a billion people.

Moreover, it is official language UN, EU, NATO and dozens of other international organizations.

Knowledge of English is especially necessary when traveling. In almost all countries, English is taught in schools and universities, and at the very least in them, the local population will be able to understand what you want from them. Service staff hotels, restaurants in tourist spots and without knowledge of spoken English, they are rarely employed.

When you travel without knowing English, you begin to understand what it means to be born deaf and feeble-minded. Philip Bouvard

That is, the most important thing is direct communication with residents of other countries. And it won't necessarily be local. Perhaps you will befriend a neighbor on the plane, or have an affair with a random traveler you meet?

Of course, no fewer people do not know English except for basic words (stop, please, help, money, sleep, etc.). In this case, phrasebooks come to the rescue. But in practice, for the North and South America, European and African knowledge of English + Spanish or French is enough with the head. Well, for polyglots there is also German and Italian =)

So that's it. Why else do we need languages? Of course - information! From basic airport orientation and reading US Alert-SMS about an impending storm to searching for travel information on the Internet.

You have no idea what great amount information is not translated into Russian. Let's say when I am my main sources of information in English.

Books are also a treasure trove of information that should not be forgotten. Many of them do not exist in Russian at all: these are valuable guidebooks to different countries (ranging from those free ones that are issued at airports to Lonely Planet), and historical, documentary, which is not relevant for our region (now I am studying the history of the United States according to American textbooks).

Fiction is more often translated, but how? A poor translation is half the trouble. There is also literature that cannot be translated. To recall at least Edgar Alan Poe and his poem "The Raven", the translations into Russian of which are countless, but no one was able to put into words that character, rhyme and gloomy caw of a bird, as the author did in his native language.

Hundreds of films, especially documentaries or non-popular and non-grossing films, do not have translation, and sometimes even subtitles. And fans of TV series - it's generally a thrill, watching the series is the very first among friends who are waiting for a low-quality translation, in which half of the essence of the phrases will be lost. And I’m not joking, everyone, even large TV companies, is guilty of such a translation.

Student in the dining room: I have two buns and a compote, please. Is it okay that I'm in English? (c) Anecdote

Do not forget that in many vacancies it is directly indicated that it is required good knowledge of English language. Without it, anywhere, even on the exam or the exam.

I think I was able to convince you that English is it necessary? Fine! Then - forward to study!

How to learn English?

We are often taught the language from school. With rare exceptions, almost everyone is learning English. In "cool" kindergartens - even earlier, children are taught the knowledge of foreign words. Then universities. However on own experience I can say that if you did not apply, for example, to an English translator, then all your knowledge is superficial.

Similarly, after studying for 9 school years and then 4 years in college language I can hardly knit an easy sentence. No, simple, according to the diagrams from the textbooks - easy. But on a conversational level, I immediately began to "swim". I didn't even understand what the interlocutor was saying to me. The accent also plays a role, which each country has its own, and the accent with which our teachers speak and demand from us is not clear to anyone at all.

First, it is advisable to determine the level of knowledge of the language. They are standardly measured on a scale:

  • Beginner
  • Elementary
  • Pre-Intermediate
  • Intermediate
  • Upper-Intermediate
  • Advanced

If you have not previously learned the language, then the most the best way will - go to language classes... This is, of course, paid. But in many large cities various social free courses or clubs at public organizations, just go to Google. Go there for at least a month and learn the first rules. But I promised oh self-study... Therefore, you will need to take an English textbook for grade 1 or 5 (depending on from which they study it in this program) together with workbook and study it cover to cover. This knowledge is actually enough at first.

Recently, on the Internet, I came across an idea with which I fully agree: why do we at school begin to learn theory in English lessons at once? Grammar? Rules? After all, the child begins to speak his native language, still not really knowing how to walk, but at school he speaks fluently. In the 5th - 6th grade, grammar is accelerated and that's it! Further - dictations, compositions. Everything is based on colloquial speech that will come in handy in life.

As soon as you started to understand at least a little the times or have already learned the language at school, you can move on. To improve speaking skills.

And yes, I almost forgot. There is such a cycle of lessons on the Internet “Polyglot. English in 16 hours. " There is an awful lot of water there, but you will receive information for the first 5-6 years of studying a language at school within a few days in an accessible form.

First release on YouTube: ( but do not rush to leave this site, I will tell you a lot of useful things!)

After viewing, the transition to the next will open. There are 16 of them in total.

Here are the methods that I use when learning and improving language skills, considering the most effective:

Watching films

Others have spoken about this many times, and I will repeat. A great option is watching a movie in a foreign language. Just don't just watch it with English subtitles.

The most efficient way:

  1. download the movie and open it in the media player
  2. Watch an excerpt 10 - 15 minutes without subtitles
  3. Go back, turn on subtitles and watch the same passage with subtitles without straining
  4. We go back and look through with pauses, trying to understand all the phrases in full (and not translate every word)
  5. Watching again with subtitles
  6. Disable subtitles and view the excerpt

This is a rather long way, one full-length movie can take 5 - 8 hours. But first, you don't have to do it without interruption. You can watch half of the film today, tomorrow - the second half. And secondly, a great option is serials. They are short, plus I love them because the actors are on set they often improvise, speech is less rehearsed, and jargon expressions and words are regularly used, which can be indispensable in vocabulary.

I love TV shows. For example - the cartoon "The Simpsons". I recently reviewed How I Met Your Mother, and now I switched to House of Cards and Friends. However, this is a waste of time, although it allows you to relax, distract from work. But if you watch them in the original language, then you can turn your leisure time into learning.

Watching the series "How I Met Your Mother" in the original

After 3 - 6 months, you will be able to freely watch TV series without subtitles.

A common beginner's mistake- just watch movies with subtitles, and even Russian ones. But our brains are tricky and lazy. There will be no benefit. Without noticing it, you will not listen to the dialogues, but simply read them on the screen. And at the same time, you will not get the proper impression from the film itself, because often the details on the screen are the main thing.

And further. Try to avoid cartoons like The Simpsons, Futurama, etc., where the characters speak in unnatural voices to begin with. Choose those where you can hear everything clearly and legibly, even if at first it is not clear 🙂

Some people watch video blogs. Too interesting thing, you can find a lot for a variety of tastes with the help of Youtube. And I would like to separately recall the popular science TED, which simply cannot be ignored. If there is more and more entertaining content on YouTube, then here are really useful things, after listening to which you will learn a lot of new things.

Tutorials

This is just for those who are strained with grammar. There are a lot of textbooks and tables on the Internet for studying exactly those nuances that you do not understand.

For grammar, I recommend taking "English Grammar In Use", where everything is without excess water: the rule is exercise. Or "Upstream". Depending on your knowledge of the language, you also select the level of the textbook. Levels are different and I have already recommended taking a test to determine your own.

If a specific question is not clear to you: for example, when to use the article a, and when - the, or you are confused in tenses - look in Google for tables and pictorial pictures. This is a great way to memorize material. Can even be printed and hung over a work or study table.

Ask your friends who have recently attended school or who have children - schoolchildren. They probably have similar tutorials.

Books

Reading books in English is another great way that develops not so much spoken language as it replenishes vocabulary.

If your knowledge of English is still on basic level, then it is worth starting with special books for study, which are arranged according to the principle: one page is written in English, and the other in Russian. There are also such children, there are adults. It is difficult to find in small towns, you have to order via the Internet, but it's worth it!

Then you can already move on to ordinary literature. Artistic. Scientific, historical, which abounds special terms- this will have to be left for later.

Don't make it difficult for yourself to learn and don't overload your brain. Have mercy on him. Start with simple literature.

Let's take whichever is simpler. Better to start with great books for children that are great for adults to read. From myself I can advise “Children railroad By Edith Nesbit and the incredible To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. As an option: first read in Russian, and a couple of weeks later - in the original.

From an adult, detectives and novels are good. There are not too many terms in them either. But, if the level allows - we go further.

My first book completely read in English is Harry Potter. It is also easy to read, but if you are familiar with a work in Russian, in order to understand different words, spells, etc., and not look in the dictionary - what it is.

From my own experience I will say: at the beginning of the book you will not understand even half of the words, by the middle - you will be able to guess by meaning what the phrases mean, and by the end of the book you will simply dissolve in it and perhaps even forget that you are reading in a foreign language.

It is very important. Don't translate words in your mind. Don't think about how to say it in English. Think in English!

Original books can be downloaded online or ordered online. For me, an e-book has become a valuable acquisition: cheap (well, or completely free 😉), affordable and no need to wait for months for delivery. But not everyone likes to read from the screen.

Sale of e-books - up to $ 2 per item

Where to get printed publications? Major cities have specialized bookstores or departments. You can ask your travel friends to send you something by purchasing from yourself (the main thing is not to forget to exchange contacts). And even to run to a flea market or a bookstore in another country is wonderful.

Another option for obtaining paper books in English is bookcrossing and the place where all English teachers live - second hand. Yes, very few people know, but in stores like "Clothes from Europe" very, very often they bring in packs of literature in foreign languages, often in good condition.

I also like to take a fresh newspaper in English at the airport (they are often free) and read over a cup of coffee or tea. Incidentally, this is a rare case when I touch the paper press.

Podcasts and Audiobooks

This is an option for those who say that they have no time to read (although if you do the right time management and give up social media, you can make good use of the freed up hours). Well, or simply, if he spends a lot of time on the road.

So, according to statistics, a resident of Moscow spends at least 2 hours a day in a traffic jam. I'm in small town, I travel by bus on average 1 - 1.5 hours one way for study or work. This is all - the time that can potentially be used not only for listening to music, but also for learning the language (as well as for learning in general, you can now find a sufficient number of teaching audio casts).

And what can we say about the road on the train, intercity bus trips and air travel. learning!

Car owners download everything to themselves on a flash drive and can listen to instead of annoying radio with their DJs, and the rest use MP3 players, phones and iPods.

It's better to start with podcasts. There are a lot of them on the Internet for every taste: from travel to car reviews, from advice for girls to sports news.

You can search for podcasts in special directories - podcast directories:

  • Of course, iTunes

If there is too much time and you want to listen to a book, but there is no time for reading? Then your choice is audiobooks in foreign languages. They are also sold in the Apple Store, Google Play, online stores, and even regular CD stands in your city. In addition, they are freely available in bulk on torrent trackers on the Internet.

It is important not to take amateur books (those that are not read by professionals or are not recorded at the studio), as well as pirated copies. It is often simply impossible to listen to this because of the sound quality and pronunciation of the reader.

But what you should pay attention to: there are entire audio performances, where each role is read by his own actor.

You need to try, determine what will be more interesting and pleasant for you to listen to.

Music

Fine, fine. There are people who cannot live without music. I am one of them. Therefore, my paragraph, which said that it was necessary to replace music with podcasts, they were skeptical and even grimaced somewhere.

If music is an integral part of your life, try switching to Western artists. Any genre, except, perhaps, chanson, has wonderful performers in English: from rap and rock to jazz and blues.

If you just love good music, regardless of genre - pay attention to the compilations. Let's say I have on my computer all the songs of the Grammy nominees since 1995, and since then it has become very difficult for me to listen to many of our performers and our music on the road. I give preference to quality western music.

Communication

I have described a lot, but nothing replaces communication. I know from myself: when I come to a conference, I am not able to check in normally at the hotel, I mix up the words. After a couple of days, having had plenty of conversations with my colleagues, I calmly deliver a speech, not even prepared, without a single mistake. The reason is communication. After returning home, I will be on the reflex to answer calls or apologize for stepping on someone's foot in English for another week, and then I will forget him again.

Knowledge without practice quickly fades into the background. No, they are not forgotten. It's like riding a bike. You will remember when you have to, but not instantly.

Therefore, your the main task- communicate with native speakers to the maximum. And for this, there are also a lot of options:

Make friends while traveling, exchange contacts and chat in social networks, call each other on Skype

Communicate by text or Skype - this is also very useful!

Find new friends on social networks and thematic communities to communicate. Dozens and hundreds of forums on any topic that interests you are waiting for you on the Internet. Register, fill out the profile and keep in touch. At the same time, you will improve your professional skills or develop your hobby.

You can get a little "nostalgic" for the old days and use regular mail, making penpals, or at least.

There are special sites where you can find a pen pal or video chat to communicate in order to train your language skills. Here is some of them:

In the near future, the site will appear detailed overview best services for such communication! Subscribe to our news through social networks or the subscription form below and you will be the first to know about it!

But be careful, especially girls. There are a lot of perverts out there. No, not all of course. But at least, according to the experience of friends, Egyptians and Turks, it is definitely not worth adding as friends. Roughly speaking, the resources are interesting and good, BUT you need to be mentally prepared for indecent offers or photos and immediately block such characters, at the same time complaining about them so that the administration would block them.

Often, the main factor that is an obstacle to such communication is the fear to write or say with a mistake. But you must understand - the interlocutor will not always notice her and will probably understand what you wanted to say. Hardly anyone will make a comment.

Writing is even easier. When you are chatting on the Internet, you can check the text in advance before sending.

Service has recently become a real find for me. And now I just can't imagine how I did without him! It allows you to quickly correct grammar and spelling mistakes in the text in English, and even with explanations. Unlike checking Word, he understands the logic of sentences and in which case he asks for your advice.

The service is free. It has some paid features, but I didn't even really understand which ones. It seems to be doing great without them. Moreover: there is a browser plugin that will immediately check your spelling on forums, chats, etc. Therefore, try it yourself. The paid version also takes into account the logic of the entire text, but for correspondence the Free version is enough for me, and when writing business letters I run it first in Word, then in Grammarly.

As for the mistakes and difficulties in translation, for some reason I immediately remembered the famous "Kitchen Debates" between Khrushchev and Nixon, with these phrases like "We also don't flap flies with our nostrils", which Nikita Sergeevich poured and which clearly made the translator feel bad.

Be sure to stay tuned to local news. Representatives of various international missions, mayors of cities of other states, and exchange students very often come to the regions, and even more so to the capital. Go to meetings.

In addition to communicating with native speakers, there is also a good option communicate with students like you. There are a lot of conversational clubs where people come, watch a movie, discuss it and tell something interesting, play games like the mafia - while using only English in communication.

Trips

And ... Yes, how can we go without it. It seems strange to write about this on a travel blog, but you see what's the matter. Many people manage to travel, almost without encountering a foreign language. And I'm not talking about who travels to the near abroad.

First of all, remember - you must minimize communication with "your own kind". We are so arranged that we are drawn to “ours”. And hardly having arrived in an unfamiliar country or city and having heard the Russian Ukrainian Belarusian speech - we immediately rush to them, get to know each other.

I propose to do something completely different - communicate only with native speakers or those who speak English (contrary to popular belief, knowledge of English in Europe is much worse than ours among young people, let alone their accent ...).

This is the huge advantage of budget travel. You are more likely to encounter ordinary people... For example, when you hitchhike or live in a family's house. Maybe in a hostel or even! All this is an opportunity for communication. Do not walk gloomily and do not close yourself as much as possible. Chat with people and you will find a lot around you. interesting personalities, with whom you may again and again intersect on a journey or in general on the path of life.

Well, how can you meet beautiful girls without knowing English? 🙂

By the way, if you suddenly do not travel, you can host foreigners through coaching, but this is more likely to the previous point, in "Communication".

Getting into language environment, you suddenly start to know the language. It is the language environment, not the country. This is the reason why thousands of Russians have managed to live in Brighton for 20 years and not learn the language! After all, they were surrounded by Russian-speaking neighbors, shop signs in Russian ...

1. Before the trip, tune in to the language as much as possible, watch films, interviews with your favorite actors or musicians. If you are afraid to watch new films, start with your favorite, but in English. 🙂

2. Create for yourself a mini dictionary of frequently used phrases and expressions, for example, how and where to go in the city. Some tourist will definitely ask you for directions, or maybe the resident himself.

3. Set a goal for yourself to get to know local residents and communicate with them, learn in this way something about the country that nowhere and no one will know except you!

4. Do for yourself "offloading" hours with friends or with native speakers, when you do not speak your native language, but only in English. Take a break from your native language :)!

5. You also use traditional types of training, like watching videos from the British Council website, BBC Learning English, BBC News.

The Internet opened up a whole new world opportunities for those who aspire.

Development information technologies makes its own adjustments in our lives: instead of attending regular lessons and studying with a teacher in a traditional setting, many learn English from the comfort of their own homes.

In addition to saving time, online education offers a host of new opportunities.

Learning English online effectively!

You may be thinking that by learning English online, you will have to sacrifice the quality of your speaking and reading skills. This is not true! If you choose, you will have the opportunity to practice your written and spoken English. You just need a microphone to speak and headphones to listen. The rest will depend only on you!

Benefits of learning English online

Whether you choose the Internet or computer format, there are many benefits to using a computer.

First, you can control the pace of your learning. When you study English in a traditional classroom, you are forced to learn at a pace that is comfortable for most in your group. If you learn more slowly than your classmates, you may lag behind them. If your level is above average, you will have to limit yourself in development and adapt to everyone.

Usage computer technology will allow you to choose the pace of your learning. This, in turn, will give you the opportunity to reallocate time to those areas where you need to improve knowledge.

Another advantage of learning with new technologies, especially - you can study regardless of your location. Using an internet connection and Wi-Fi technology, you can very easily "enter" your class and complete the required lesson.

Traveling a lot for work doesn't mean you should start an English class. But in the case of traditional English classes, you would be assigned a "date" at a fixed time and, most importantly, in a strictly defined place. And until a method of instantaneous movement in space and time has not been invented, online education remains an excellent alternative to traditional training when it is impossible to attend courses or an individual tutor.

The key to success is choosing the right training program

The key to success in learning English with a computer is choosing correct program learning.

Please select educational program, which, along with basic vocabulary, involves learning through written or oral dialogues.

The grammar rules are of course important. But if your goal is free oral speech, then you need a course with an emphasis on dialogues.

Ideally, take your pick. Do not forget that your course must include listening comprehension, i.e. listening comprehension.

Only by repeatedly listening to the sounds of the target language will you learn to pronounce them yourself.

In this case, using a computer in learning a language is extremely useful, because you can listen to phrases and dialogues for as long as you like - until you firmly master their pronunciation.

Other useful internet resources

The Internet also gives us the opportunity to improve our reading and writing skills in English. Since 80% of existing sites are made in English, you can learn new phrases and words of any subject every day. In addition to this, various chat rooms and forums help develop written communication skills in English. There are also many sites where you can download themed word lists and games to help you improve

System

If you want to quickly learn English on your own at home from scratch, then you should stick to some system. It is similar to the system used in physical training, and covers all areas of learning a foreign language.

There are five points to master:

  • grammar;
  • reading;
  • vocabulary;
  • listening;
  • speaking.

The meaning of the system is that every day you have to devote 15-20 minutes of your time to a specific item.

Day 1: Grammar

Grammar is the foundation of everything. To begin with, you should memorize all pronouns, tenses, irregular verbs and exceptions.

§English course from Dmitry Petrov and from the channel "Culture"... In just 16 lessons, the teacher will introduce you to the basics of the English language, using his individual system.

§Channel English Galaxy will show you how to learn English yourself at home from scratch and for free. The channel contains a huge number of lessons that will help you master a foreign language.

Native native speakers use only 4 tenses in everyday speech: Present Simple, Past simple, Future Simple and Present Continuous. Well, they also love the Passive voice. This is enough for the elementary level.

Useful software

The Duolingo app will explain the basics of English grammar. You will need to devote only 10-15 minutes of free time a day to the language. The application will teach you simple grammar and translation of elementary things.

You shouldn't sit for 4-5 hours studying English. Enough 15-20 minutes a day. There can be 3 or 4 such days a week.

Day 2: Reading

Start with the simplest texts. Let it be children's books about bunnies, cats and foxes. But you will understand everything that is happening there. Books can be found in major book houses or ordered online.

Yes, electronic books- it's cool, but it's better to print the text or buy a book in English. So you can write the translation of a word right above the English word. As they did before at school.

In addition to books, you can find sites, entertainment portals or blogs in English that talk about things that interest you. Most importantly, you should like it. If you are more interested in reading technical texts, then why do you know about how God sent a piece of cheese to a crow? Read what you want.

§Books in English for beginners (level elementary):

  • Peppa Pig (books about Peppa pig);
  • Danny and the Dinosaur
  • Winnie the Pooh
  • Moomin and the Moonlight Adventure (adventures of Mummy Troll);
  • When Lulu Went to the Zoo

intermediate:

  • The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Mary Poppins
  • The Black Cat (Edgar Poe) / (Black cat)
  • The Gift of the Magi.

§Books in English for the level advanced:

You are the God of English! Read at least "Harry Potter" in the original, at least "The Lord of the Rings".

  • The Time Machine
  • The Invisible Man
  • Pride and Prejudice
  • Four Weddings and a Funeral (Four weddings and one funeral);
  • The Grass is Singing.

Day 3: Vocabulary
